Holidays in Newquay

Holidays in Newquay are all about stunning scenery, beaches, and, of course, waves. As it’s the surf capital of the UK, you’ll find an abundance of surf shops and schools allowing you to immerse yourself in the surfing culture from the moment you arrive, whether you just want to watch or get stuck in.

However, if surfing isn’t for you, there are plenty of ways to fill the days while staying in the stunning beachside town of Newquay. Head to one of the many beaches for a family day on the sand - picture rock pooling, picnics, and sandy toes! Or, if you fancy a bit of retail therapy, the bustling town has a selection of independent shops selling an array of goods including clothes, artwork, and delightful handmade treats – not to mention a mouth-watering selection of cafés, bars, and restaurants for a mid-shopping or post-beach refuel.

Newquay also has a selection of attractions and events, perfect for the kids (and big kids) from a wild and wonderful zoo to a round of golf by the sea. There are also some great walks in the area thanks to the beautiful South West Coast Path, perfect for a dog-friendly Cornish getaway.

Did you know...

Newquay has nine sandy beaches to choose from!

Beaches in Newquay

When staying at a holiday cottage in Newquay, you won’t be short of aquatic adventures, with lots of sandy beaches on your doorstep. All of Newquay’s beaches are lifeguarded in the summer, providing a safe place to spend the day soaking up the sun.

Fistral beach – What do you call the best beach for surfing in the UK? Fistral! With the most consistent surfing in the country and great swathes of golden sand, there’s little doubt as to why surfers flock here from all over the place. You’ll find a surf school and wetsuit hire for those wanting to travel light and it’s dog friendly all year round for those travelling with furry companions.

Watergate Bay – Second on Newquay’s surfing scoreboard, Watergate Bay offers a seriously spacious alternative to Fistral whether you fancy a surf, a stroll or a hot chocolate in the beachside café.

Crantock beach – If you prefer a quieter beach backed by sand dunes then Crantock beach won’t disappoint. Dog-friendly and perfectly sheltered on the southern end, this sandy haven is popular with families and anyone looking for a place to doze in the sand.

Newquay Towan – Right in the centre of the town, Newquay Towan is great for quick dips and sandy escapes while you explore the surrounding shops, attractions, and perhaps even a bar or two!

Great Western, Porth, Whipsiderry, Tolcarne, Lusty Glaze, and Mawgan Porth are also fantastic beaches in Newquay. Read all about them in our extended guide and discover your favourite!

Things to do in Newquay

With quick access to the rugged north Cornish coast and some fun-fuelled attractions and activities, there are lots of great things to do in Newquay.

Surfing & Watersports

Whether you’re a first-timer or a seasoned pro, the beaches of Newquay offer something for every ability, weather forecast, and tide. And it’s not just surfing on offer either. Bring your own seafaring devices or hire kayaks and paddleboards from one of the many rental shops around.

Attractions

With such an abundance of attractions in and around Newquay, it’s the perfect place for a family holiday at any time of year. Newquay Zoo offers a great day out, as do the nearby Screech Owl Sanctuary and the Blue Reef Aquarium. For those who love animals and theme park rides, Dairyland Farm Park is the place to be while Trerice Manor House offers a beautiful walk through history.

If you fancy something a bit different, fishing trips and sea safaris are available, from which you can take in the scenery from a different angle. You may even be lucky enough to catch a sight of seals and dolphins!

Newquay Golf Club overlooks Fistral beach and is regarded as one of the best golf courses in the county, providing a different challenge every day depending on the weather, all with incredible sea views.

Shopping

From beach supplies to holiday mementoes, Newquay’s streets are lined with lots of interesting shops from big names to independent favourites. Unsurprisingly, there are plenty of surf shops where you can fill up your beachy wardrobe including Married to the Sea, Boardwalk Surf Shop, Watershed, and Ann’s Cottage – some even have surfboards too so you can really kit yourself out. Razzmatazz is an eclectic mix of fun, holiday take-homes and Lucky Go Happy provides a lovely selection of ethical bits and bobs for the whole family.

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, a trip to Roly’s Fudge Pantry or Cornish Cream will see it satisfied as you’ll find a fantastic array of Cornish chocolates, fudge, and even Cornish cream tea hampers (which make for the ultimate beachside picnic).

Walks

With the north Cornish coast right on your doorstep, it will come as little surprise that Newquay is jam-packed with incredible walks. Walk around Park Head (which you might recognise from Poldark) and Pentire Steps for some stunning coastal views or trudge along to Lappa Valley where you can swap the rippling blue of the sea for the dappled shade of the woods. You’ll also find a lovely area around the Porth Reservoir and surrounding wildlife reserve, giving wildlife watchers plenty of opportunities to whip the binoculars out.

Dining out

Newquay's vibrant foodie scene has grown and grown over the years, with the town now offering something for every taste and occasion. If you want to eat out, you’ll find a huge selection of eateries, including many beach cafés and restaurants serving up locally caught seafood with incredible sea views. Or, if you fancy something special after a day surfing the waves, check out the many fantastic fine dining options or cocktail bars for a relaxing drink.

If you want to stay in and make the most of your lovely home from home, there are some excellent farmshops and delis in the area, including the welcoming Trevilley Farm for all your locally-produced needs or Malcolm Barnecutt Bakery for some seriously moreish fresh bakes.

Dog-friendly Newquay

If you want to bring your four-legged friend with you on your Cornish holiday, you couldn’t pick a better spot than Newquay where you’ll find plenty of great dog walks.

Dog-friendly beaches

Fistral beach – Surf, sea, and sandy paws, it’s all waiting for you at Fistral beach 365 days a year.

Watergate Bay – With miles of sand and lots of rockpools and caves to sniff out at low tide, this dog-friendly beach is a favourite with dogs and humans alike.

Whipsiderry beach – Considered a hidden gem by many, dogs are welcome throughout the year on Whipsiderry so why not take a dog-nap in the sand before checking out those rock formations!

Mawgan Porth beach – with Bedruthan Steps a short walk away and lots of sand for zoomies, the beach at Mawgan Porth is great for tuckering out the pooch (and the kids).

You can also see these beaches from the water, as many of the boat trips in the area welcome seadogs aboard!

Dog-friendly pubs and restaurants

When it comes to dinner time, there are plenty of dog-friendly pubs, restaurants and cafés where the whole pack can shake the day off and refuel.

Lewinnick Lodge – Perfectly placed up on the cliffs on the Pentire Headland, Lewinnick Lodge offers sea views with your meal, whether it’s breakfast, lunch or evening drinks with the pooch by your side.

Lakeside Café – Another dreamy spot for a bite to eat, Lakeside Café not only provides delicious treats for its human guests but for its doggie guests too – homemade dog ice cream should get those tails wagging!

The Old Albion Inn – 400 years old with no signs of slowing down, The Old Albion has truly perfected its welcoming atmosphere. Enjoy the thatched roof as you enter and the fully-stocked bar when you’re inside.

What's on in Newquay

Whether you love music and surfing, beer or food, there’s a festival in Newquay for you…

Cornwall Street Food Festival

Hitting the cliffs in June, Cornwall’s inaugural Street Food Festival brings cuisines from all over the world together as people celebrate great food and great views.

Boardmasters

This surf and music festival seems to get bigger every year as thousands descend on Newquay's Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay to watch surf competitions and live music while sampling all that Newquay has to offer.

Newquay Beer Festival

Sample over 50 ales and enjoy live music as you make the most of Newquay’s one and only beer festival, which takes over Hendra Holiday Park every September.

Excellent appointed Apartment. The owners have thought of everything to ensure their guests have an enjoyable and comfortable stay. Outside shower/wetsuit store a real bonus enabling us to walk from Fistral to the Apartment outside facility in our wetsuits. Brilliant! Hope to return. Would thoroughly recommend.

Amazing apartment with everything you could wish for. The decor, the view, the well equipped kitchen (we cooked a few times as it was so good), the location with just a short 5 minute walk down to Fistral Beach and about a mile or so to Newquay, it was perfect! Would recommend to anyone.

Spent a wonderful week enjoying the apartment, the showers and beds in this apartment are better than my own! Easy access to the quiet end of Fistral and the Gannel estuary and Crantock - couldn't decide which spot I liked the most. When not at the beach, we spent time on local walks enjoying the views and eating in nearby cafes - Seaspray and Fernpit. Hope to return in the future.

Fantastic Apartment overlooking Fistral Beach walking distant to restaurants in Newquay

Honestly couldn’t fault this holiday apartment. You can tell the owners have honestly thought of everything in a lot of detail.

Absolutely beautiful apartment, hopefully we will be back very soon.

Great location. Fantastic views of Fistral Beach. Walking distance to both Fistral beach and Crontock beach. Apartment was clean with fantastic furnishings. Brilliant shower. Kitchen spotless and so well equipped, did not mind cooking on this holiday.

We visited this same apartment two years ago and it was just as lovely this time. Very clean and excellent facilities especially if you want to cook at the apartment. It is decorated to a very high standard. Location is good for both the beach and visiting other areas in Cornwall. Hope to stay again soon.

This was the second time back to the apartment this year. We loved the apartment just as much. A wonderful place to stay with easy access to the beaches and restaurants.

All the furnishings are a wonderful standard and better than being at home. We will be back thank you

Stunning apartment in a great location. Beautifully decorated and having the outside seating area is lovely. It rained all week for us so we didn't actually use it but still nice to look at through the window. Wouldn't hesitate in recommending.

2 at 36 is an excellent apartment, with good views, access to Fistral and Crantock and outdoor space. It was wonderful to wake up and be able to check the surf visually from the garden, then head down before breakfast.

Just came back from a lovey week .. the apartment was perfect , well equipped, extremely clean and location was brilliant.. Would highly recommend ..

We are a family of four and thoroughly enjoyed our week at Apartment 2 at 36. It is a beautiful property - comfortable, clean, spacious, and furnished to a very high standard. The huge outside living space is a real bonus. Close enough for beach walks on Fistral and to explore the nearby headland and other paths. We would be very happy to stay again and would not hesitate to recommend it.

The apartment was absolutely stunning, very thoughtfully furnished, the kitchen was very well stocked you could bake a cake on a rainy day or make cocktails in the evening. The view was amazing, it was nice to be able to see it form every room in the apartment. We had a lovely welcome pack with a beautiful handwritten card, it the little things that make it an extra special stay. We absolutey loved that the apartment used local Artist in the artwork and ceramics, nothing was done cheaply and the owners have lovely taste.
We didn't want to go home.

This apartment is absolutely amazing. All the equipment is of a very high standard and feel that the owner has taken a great deal of pride in this accommodation. There are beautiful views over looking Fistral Beach from the patio area and we spent a great deal of time just sitting and enjoying the view.

We are already planning a return visit as soon as possible.

The apartment itself is lovely, and it is very very well equipped. Parking and surf store is a welcome bonus. The location is perfect for both Fistral and Crantock beaches. We will return.

We had a fantastic week at apartment 2 @36, the weather wasn’t so good so we couldn’t make use of the fantastic large patio and furniture, due to it being a little cold and Rainey the apartment was so warn and comfortable and exceptionally well cleaned and presented. It’s location suited us a 5-10 minute walk to the main area of Fistral beach, 5 mins to the cafe where during low tide you can walk across to Crantock and beyond to porch Joke beach. Although not close to town there are a couple of restaurants and cafes to walk to The apartment is a credit to the owners and we will return next year hopefully in the sun this time !

Apartment 2 at 36 was excellent. Fixtures, fittings & decor were of a very high standard. Kitchen was very well equipped & even included a cocktail shaker & glasses, (I’d actually brought my own cocktail shaker as rarely you would find one in a rental but they’d even catered for this). A bottle of wine & card had been left which was a thoughtful touch. The garden area was beautiful & well maintained with steps & a short walk to Fistral beach. It was quiet & felt very safe due to the various key codes for the entry/exit gates/doors. Clearly a lot of thought had gone into the specifications of the apartment, all of which we appreciated. We really enjoyed our stay & would recommend the apartment to friends, family & work colleagues. Susanna Beer.

One of the most beautiful apartments we've stayed in on holidays with great quality furnishings and condition. We enjoyed the large outdoor patio that leads into the communal space as well as the designated car parking. Both bedrooms and living rooms look into the communal gardens with a sea view. Its a 5-10 mins walk down to Fistral beach which is lovely. We enjoy cooking and the kitchen was really well equipped for this purpose: fully set of indoor/outdoor crockery, pots and pans and utensils. As someone has mentioned there isn't many eateries/cafes in the area and a good 15 min walk to cafes/shops but with free parking in Sainsburys, we ended up driving over to pick up groceries and cooking at home. It would have been great to be able to walk down to Crantock beach but the footpath is closed due to Covid, so hoping this will be open next season.

We really enjoyed our stay and looking forward to coming back again soon!

Our holiday abroad was cancelled so we only booked this apartment a couple of weeks before we were due to go. We were lucky to have found it! The accommodation was decorated to a very high standard and spotlessly clean. Everything was supplied that we needed. The extra large balcony was an added bonus for an apartment which looked onto Fistral beach and was lovely to sit on. It was only a 10 minute walk to the beach so an ideal location and about a 20 minute walk into Newquay. Also in a good location to visit other areas of Cornwall. Will definitely be returning to this apartment and already recommended to friends.

This was probably the nicest holiday apartment we have ever stayed in. It was fantastic! Beautifully decorated, brilliant showers, all the mod cons and utensils you could ever need! The owners had thought if everything! The beds were really comfy too. The patio was a great place to relax and the kids enjoyed running about in the garden. It was about a good location aswell and we enjoyed exploring, finding a nice rocky beach a 5 minute walk away at the Gannett estuary.

Excellent quality accommodation has all you need for a very comfortable stay. could not fault the service provided by the agents Close to beach easy access from apartment so good location but not many eateries around especially if you have children

Amazing property. Lovely view and perfect location. Spacious and modern and spotlessly clean. We loved everything about the apartment and we are planning to stay there again next year. Would highly recommend

Beautiful apartment, very tastefully furnished and extremely comfortable. A pleasure to relax and enjoy a holiday here.

We stayed in the Thirty-Six Apartment two weeks during August and wow! What a great place – super location – walking distance to Fistral Beach, great apartment – so spacious, cosy and comfortable, we felt at home. We really enjoyed the terrace, the view, the garden. We loved the cool and “hippie” atmosphere in Newquay. Definitely worth recommendation! Even though I'm back at home, my thoughts are still on Fistral beach… Mrs. Potucek, Luxembourg

Excellent facilities and conveniently located within walking distance to Fistral Beach.

Amazing apartment, great location walk to Fistral beach, everything nice and new, comfy beds and sofa in lounge, loved the amazon echo! I need to buy one of these! Nice friendly neighbours, lovely restaurants in walking distance on Fistral Beach, perfect holiday even better that the sun was shining all week! Amazing sunsets too on both Fistral and Tolcarne beaches, hope to return next year

The apartment is furnished to a very high standard and is in a good location with great views access Fistral beach and it was very peaceful in the evening We would definitely go back
