Penzance Holidays

Penzance is great for short breaks out of season and there are many boating trips from the harbour that will take you to explore the West Coast from the sea. Due to its excellent road and rail links, holidays in Penzance offer something for everyone; beaches, rock pools, coastal path walking, National Trust and English Heritage sites, restaurants and galleries. The town has plenty of car parks that offer a weekly stay from £30.

Penzance has secret treats; if you take the time to explore. For a start it’s a good town for walking. The very best way to see Penzance is by the alleys and walkways, the through-lanes from here to there. Take a day to explore the town this way and you will discover its beautiful parks, its Regency and Georgian architecture.

Penzance: 'Montpelier' of Cornwall

The oldest part of town is the quayside at Penzance’s Inner Harbour. The Dry Dock, Quay Street, Battery Rocks. The original promenade was built in 1844.

You can walk Penzance Promenade from Battery Rocks to Wherrytown, where there is one of two Penzance skateparks. From Wherrytown, keep to the seafront across Newlyn Green and you are in Newlyn. In all a 30 minute stroll, depending how long Jnr. wants to spend skateboarding. There is also a proper-job boating pool at Wherrytown for sailing those radio-controlled (and sail-driven) boats that just don’t get anywhere in the bath at home.

The arrival of the railway in 1852 made the ‘Montpelier of England’ (John Betjeman 1964 Shell Guide) even more accessible.

Many interesting boats visit Mounts Bay, from the surreal floating yacht-hotels to mighty ships like the four-masted windjammer, KruzenshternThere is a Sailing Club and The Mounts Bay Lugger Association which, as its name suggests, celebrates the beauty of the Cornish Lugger, a traditional fishing boat.

Penzance has two harbour-side pubs: The Dock Inn and The Dolphin. The Dolphin is reputedly the first place in Britain where tobacco was smoked and the hanging judge, Judge Jefferies, is reputed to have held court here in the 1700s after the Monmouth Rebellion.

Things to do near Penzance

Stay self catering in Penzance and you’re perfectly situated to explore the surrounding towns and villages with their own individual characters. Literally minutes from Penzance is the fishing port of Newlyn whilst a little further on you’ll find the quaint village of Mousehole with its harbourside bistro and community atmosphere. Take a stroll along the coast to Marazion beach or venture in the opposite direction to the beautiful Lamorna Cove. For more ideas, check out our blog post on Days out around Penzance.

Things to do in Penzance

The Jubilee Pool
This beautiful art-deco open-air bathing pool is the UK’s largest seawater lido.  There is also an excellent cafe. The pool opens from the end of May until September.  Even in winter, some hardy year-round swimmers use battery rocks (just north of Jubilee Pool) for their daily dip!

Morrab Garden
A sub-tropical garden with Victorian fountains and a band-stand, which still plays host to concerts in the summer. The Morrab Library sits in the gardens and is an absolute joy.  The photographic archives and collections are wonderful.

Penlee Park
Full of tress and squirrels, there is a specific dog-free and child-friendly play-park within the park. Penzance Tennis Club abuts the park and Penlee House Art Gallery & Museum (with excellent cafe) sits opposite the Penlee open-air theatre and is home to a large collection of Newlyn School paintings.

Shopping in Penzance
Market Jew Street is the main high street and like all high streets, it is in the process of adapting to new out of town shopping habits. However not all town centres have the beautiful granite terrace and arcade steps, the iron railings; or retain the architecture of previous generations above the modern shop frontages. There are many Georgian and early Victorian facades just above eye-level in Penzance.

Causewayhead leads up from the town centre.  A pedestrianised street, this is Penzance's third main retail street. Half way up is the Savoy cinema, said to be the oldest continually running cinema in the British Isles.

Eating out
Penzance self catering holidays are perfect; Chapel Street leads up from the harbour to the town centre where you will find a range of restaurants and pubs as well as independent shops and houses of historic interest and importance. Lavenders Deli on Alverton Street is perfect for stocking up on treats for your holiday cottage. Check out our blog on places to eat in Marazion for ideas on where to refuel during your self catering holiday in Penzance. Or if you fancy a restaurant with spectacular views, The Bay in Penzance is the place to go. Read more on our blog: Restaurants with the best views in West Cornwall.

Tom Bawcock's Eve, Mousehole

The tradition of Tom Bawcock comes from the feast or famine lifestyle of Cornwall.  The story goes that it was just before Christmas; there had been no fish for weeks, the boats couldn’t get out into the raging storm, the village was starving. One man, Tom Bawcock, dared to take his boat out of the harbour’s safety. He returned with enough fish to make fish pie for the whole village.

Today, a festival takes place each year to celebrate Tom Bawcock's bravery. During the festival, Star Gazey pies are eaten in memory of this famous event.

Probably the best apartment in Penzance!

Lovely property in a good location with great views whatever the weather. Within a short walk from the Train and Bus Stations. 5 minutes from shops. Apartment was very clean, well equipped and welcome Prosecco was very gratefully received. Would thoroughly recommend and will definitely stay again

Fantastic. Great location for exploring the south west of Cornwall. Booked again for next year. Says it all.

Fantastic apartment with great views. Ideally placed to explore the surrounding areas. That good we booked again for next year.

Had a great week in Penzance, apartment was very clean and well equipped with good views over the harbour. Communication from Aspect holidays was great - we will definitely use them again.

This is an amazing apartment mostly for its Panoramic views and location to many of Cornwall’s amazing scenery. Access was easy and there is a lift to the apartment which is on the 4th floor. Although many of the apartments in the block appear to be residential we barely saw anyone during our stay which was peaceful and relaxing. The apartment is spacious and well equipped with good quality appliances and furnishings. The beds were very comfortable and the Prosecco, shortbread biscuits and fresh roses made for a lovely welcome. There are a good choice of books to read should you wish. I particularly enjoyed a book left by the owners on the buildings of Penzance many of which you can see from the apartment itself. There are numerous supermarkets a 5 minute drive away or smaller supermarkets within walking distance. The apartment is accessed Via security gates and has its own undercover parking space which requires you to park very close to a pillar. We have a Ford Mondeo but this was not a problem. I imagine if you had an SUV this could be more of an issue although there is alternative parking across the road in the Harbour car park at a cost. We didn’t eat out on this occasion but there are nice restaurants nearby and we can recommend Fraser’s fish and chips on the promenade. It does come with a high price tag during the peak season but we felt it was justified for it’s fabulous view. Hoping to return in the future.

We had great service from Aspects as always. We'd recommend the Pirates Rest for takeaway fish and chips.

We had a lovely stay at above the waves The apt is central to everything in a great spot and was quiet and relaxing. The views were stunning and can't wait to return. All fittings and furnishing were of a very high standard, great ensuite and comfy beds, welcome tray and flowers were much appreciated. We found the apt very warm and welcoming as were the people of Penzance.

A beautiful property, with probably the best view in Penzance

Our fourth time at Above the Waves, which probably says it all. It's a very spacious, warm and comfortable flat with amazing views to the end of the Lizard. We've only stayed in the winter when it's wonderful for weather and wave watching. All furnishings and equipment are high quality and there are plenty of crocks, pans and cutlery for those who like to cook - no cheeseparing here! The nearest shop is less than five minutes away, the remainder and the cinema, galleries, restaurants and theatre all within ten minutes.

Super flat for exploring this area of Cornwall either by public transport or by car. Great views of bay - loved watching all the harbour side action. Flat has everything you need and tastefully decorated throughout.

Incredible views and lovely flat. An excellent position, near the shops and restaurant but yet very quiet. The weather wasn’t particularly kind but even on a rainy day there was so much to look at from the huge windows . It was so nice to be able to park the car in a covered area which we found roomy enough for our medium sized car. A lovely holiday.

We were completely satisfied with the extraordinary good service. Little touches like offering to help with places to visit and taking the trouble to contact us to see if we had settled, make sure all was as we had expected and reassure us that any problems or mishaps would be sorted. The property Above the Waves in Penzance is a real touch of luxury - just perfect.

Have been to Penzance 7 times now. This is the best apartment we have ever stayed at in Penzance, and in fact is the best accommodation we stayed at during our three month holiday of the UK. Thank you aspects for the fantastic base and all the extra treats. We hope to return!

An excellent apartment, in a great location. It is spacious, clean and well-equipped. The balcony circles around from the front along the entire west side, giving fantastic views in several directions. Although we were only 2 singles, the place would easily accommodate 2 couples.

Beautiful property, amazing views

Lovely location with great views over the harbour, comfortable and we had a very pleasant stay. Fairly well equipped (could do with some more cutlery and china), and can get very hot as lot of window glass without any sunblinds. However aside from these points would definitely recommend.

Reply from Aspects Holidays

We are glad you liked Above the Waves, and thank you for your helpful comments. We have asked the housekeeper to check on the kitchen equipment; there had been plenty available, but these things can get broken over the season, so may need some additional items now. There are certainly a lot of windows there to enjoy the fantastic views; we are sorry to hear if this can make it a little warm at times. We will monitor future feedback, so that we can pass on recommendations to the owner. Thank you for letting us know your thoughts, and we hope that we will be able to welcome you back again soon. Tanya, Customer services

What a place to stay, it was fantastic in every way. Excellent views across the harbour. Close to the transport links, you don't even need a car to stay here. The town is on your door step to all the bars shops and restaurants. Lots to do and see,

Lovely apartment in very convenient central location and with a great view of the harbour and St Michael’s Mount.

Warm, clean and well-cared for property with a fantastic view of the harbour.

Absolutely Fabulous even the weather didn't spoil it We all had a fantastic holiday in a superb penthouse in a wonderful location Paul & Jayne King

An almost picture perfect view over the harbour which you cannot tire of morning or night. The apartment offered an ideal location to access the very picturesque and quaint villages in the area as well as landmarks and places of interest which were in abundance.

High quality, well equipped, fabulous views to watch the sunrise and we can't wait to return for this little (big!) bit of heaven above the waves.

The apartment is great and the location is fantastic

Fantastic location for A special holiday. Everything you could want for a carefree and relaxed stay in the best county in the country!

Excellent property with superb facilities in a prime location. Must be one of the best views in Penzance.

I would definitely reccomend this apartment. The most beautiful views from the balcony were enjoyed. Whole apartment block was very quiet. As for inside everything you need is provided couldn't have asked for a better holiday. Well worth the money. Owner has taken great care in providing a comfortable place to stay. Loved every second of it

Fabulous place in a lovely position. Covered in parking space was great. Everything in the apartment you could wish for. We have booked the same apartment (Above the Waves) again for next year. Thank you to whoever owns it for a lovely accommodation (wish it was ours). :-)

Beautifully appointed apartment with stunning views, has everything required for a perfect holiday stay, loved watched the boats coming and going, hopefully we will return.

Beautiful apartment, lounge with fabulous views in all weathers, found it difficult leave!

The apartment was the best accommodation we have ever stayed in. Its central location with exceptional views of the harbour and the bay. Having our meals on the balcony looking out to sea was something not to forget.

This is a spectacular property. Not only was everything 5 star in its appointments, but the view of the harbor was constantly entertaining to us. I can't imagine a better location.

Top quality apartment with stunning views. Good value for your money. No need to worry if you can't get your car in the space provided the public car park is across the road and we could keep an eye on it from the apartment

If I tell everyone how gorgeous it is they will all want to book it, so I'm keeping quiet...!

Wonderful views and comfortable beds. Good convenient location for day trips to the Scilly Isles and other parts of Cornwall. We had a lovely week.

It's a fabulous apartment. High specification. Comfortable. Fantastic views.

Once you stay at Above the Waves you will not want your holiday to end. Only place to stay in Penzance

The views are out of this world regardless of the weather,no need for the television, just get your wine and sit in or out accordingly.

I don't want to shout too loud as we will want to book this apartment at least half a dozen times next year!

We loved this gorgeous penthouse apartment and the wonderful sea and harbour views. We walked many miles along the coast path which was on the doorstep and came to love the many charms of Penzance.

We had a lovely time thanks
