There are many ways to enjoy Cornwall’s coast… Whether you love long, leisurely coastal walks by the sea, beach days full of waves and games, or a sundowner somewhere special as you watch the sun sink beneath the horizon.

Oh yes, from beachfront bars to Michelin Star restaurants overlooking the sea, Cornwall’s ocean-side eateries are perfectly placed for a sundowner (or two). The north coast is particularly primed for westerly displays, with late summer and autumn promising the best time to see scarlet skies.
Excited? We’ve gathered some of our favourite sundowner spots in Cornwall, so you can simply rock up, grab a seat, and enjoy the show as you sip something uber-refreshing.
Alcatraz Bar & Café, Perranporth

Best for: Cocktails and cakes
Perched on the north coast and boasting one of the best beaches in Cornwall, Perranporth is a hotspot for ocean-side dining. But when it comes to relaxed vibes and larger-than-life sunsets, nowhere does it quite like Alcatraz. By day, this quirky café promises colourful matchas, tasty breakfasts, and loaded bagels, but as the sun starts to make its descent, there’s one menu that surpasses all the rest… Cocktails. From house favourites such as Mango Mojitos and Cherry Sours to spritzers that pair perfectly with the setting - it’s the perfect excuse for a couple of Golden Hours or a High Tide Hugo - this sea-view bar invites you to kick back and watch the sun sink behind the ocean in true Cornish style.
Ugly Butterfly, Newquay

Best for: Michelin Star dining
Promising a Michelin Star and a pretty spectacular setting, Ugly Butterfly has quickly become one of Newquay’s top restaurants. Of course, the full tasting menu is an unforgettable experience - think bass with kohlrabi, apple, and dill and hot-smoked Cornish lobster with mussel butter - but this top-notch restaurant welcomes those looking for a more relaxed time, too. Snag a table on the terrace, order some snacks and cocktails from the seriously tempting bar menu (we’re a little obsessed with the Same Again with its pistachio-infused vodka and rhubarb bitters - plus it’s super easy to order more of), and sit back to watch the sun set over the Atlantic.
Porthmeor Beach Café, St Ives

Best for: Tapas and beach views
Set above the only true west-facing beach in St Ives, Porthmeor Beach Café is made for sundowners. Yes, we could sit here and tell you all about the restaurant’s delicious breakfasts (the buttermilk pancakes will blow you away) or the tempting tapas menu that has hungry patrons swapping the beach for the balcony at lunchtime, but we’re all about the evening experiences today. Oh yes, as the skies turn golden, there’s nowhere better to be than this Mediterranean-inspired restaurant. Every seat has a superb view of the seas and skies beyond for the ultimate backdrop to your meal, whether you want some small plates and a G&T or a bowl full of mussels swimming in a white wine, garlic, and cream sauce with a glass of something sparkling. After all, you need something special to match the view!
The Watering Hole, Perranporth

Best for: Sandy toes
Okay, so we’ve already included one Perranporth eatery, but we’d be mad not to mention this iconic institution in a round-up of the best sundowners in Cornwall. The UK’s only bar on a beach, The Watering Hole is for those who want to watch the sunset with sand between their toes and a crisp cider in hand - and perhaps a plate of fish and chips in front of you for good measure. Totally dog-friendly (as is the beach), this beachfront bar has everything you could need for a Cornish sunset, from uninterrupted views across the beach to live music in the summer months that adds a funky beat to your experience. Our top tip? The evening is best served post-surf, with the slight crisp of salt in your hair and a satisfying ache in your muscles.
The Wild Café, Mawgan Porth
Best for: Pitchers and pictures
With the Bedruthan Steps known far and wide as one of the best - and most dramatic - places to watch a sunset in Cornwall, The Wild Café is the perfect spot to enjoy a sundowner for those who want the drama of multicoloured skies, but also a cocktail…. Oh yes, set above the cliffs in North Cornwall, this colourful café promises an uber-relaxed evening watching the sky do its thing. The menu covers every hunger level, whether you’re feeling ‘peckish’ or ‘wolfish’, while the summer drinks menu invites you to imbibe in your favourite cocktail by the pitcher. Just picture it: a jug of peach melba sangria, a bowl of sticky honey and soy chicken wings, and a sunset that sets the skies aflame. Sign us up!
The Atlantic, Polzeath

Best for: Uber-chilled-out vibes
Give us sea views, sunsets, and a glass of something sparkly, and we’re happy. Or, just give us a table at The Atlantic. Dog-friendly and seriously laid-back (sandy toes and paws welcome), this ocean-view restaurant ticks all the boxes when it comes to sunset dining. The menu capitalises on the sunny vibes and offers an Italian-inspired selection of dishes, from a capri salad with tomatoes from the Isle of Wight to a Cornish crab tagliatelle with a generous splash of chilli oil for good measure. Speaking of good measures, the drinks menu is equally on point, with everything from Cornish ales and beers to sparkling wines and delicious mocktails ensuring every sip is as memorable as the view.
Life’s A Beach, Bude
Best for: Seapools and sunsets
Whether you’re watching storms roll in or sunsets fill the sky, Bude brings the wow-factor. Summerleaze Beach is renowned for its excellent surf, inviting sea pool, and an array of amenities, including everyone’s favourite beach bar and restaurant, Life’s A Beach. The breakfasts here are sure to set you up nicely for a day chasing waves, but it’s the suppers that score big. Think draught beer-battered fish and chips, Cornish-style moules mariniere (that’s cider and cream for those wondering), and big and beautiful burgers that pair perfectly with a pint and a setting sun. Bude boasts some seriously beautiful walks on its doorstep, so why not spend a day exploring the northernmost reaches of Cornwall, before setting down to a gold-dipped evening at L.A.B overlooking the sea.
Sennen Surf Lodge, Sennen

Best for: Post-surf sundowners
Overlooking the golden sands at Sennen, this spacious beachfront restaurant has perfected the art of the post-surf sundowner. The wraparound balcony looks out over sand and sea, with comfy chairs promising a cosy spot to unwind after a sun-soaked day on the beach (there are showers at Sennen so you can de-salt with ease before you meal). The menu is as relaxed as the venue, whether you fancy some freshly made nachos, a crispy fish sandwich, or a poke bowl topped with any and all your favourite toppings. The terrace is also home to Pizza Roja in the summer, ensuring you can enjoy the sunset with a slice of something super cheesy. Oh, and let’s not forget the sundowners. The bar is well-stocked, so you can sink into a long, leisurely evening sipping zesty lagers as the sun dips beneath the horizon.
Godolphin Arms, Marazion
Best for: Iconic views
Overlooking the famous St Michael’s Mount, few places promise such an iconic backdrop to your Cornish sundowner. The Godolphin Arms, with its sea-view (sorry, castle-view) pub garden, invites you to sit back and enjoy one of Cornwall’s most beloved landmarks as the sun paints the skies around it. It also invites you to browse the rather tempting menus, which vary from small plates and main meals to bar snacks that are best enjoyed with a drink in hand. There’s a real focus on local produce here, from the ingredients that make up the dishes to Cornish and South West beers, ciders, and spirits, so you can soak up the scenes while enjoying the tastes of the region.
Your own oceanside cottage

Best for: Secluded sunsets
As magical as it is to kick back in a beachfront bar, sometimes it’s nice just to relax in your own home from home, especially when you’ve got sea views and sunsets to enjoy. Whether you’re sinking into a hot tub or reclining on a lounger with a glass of something sparkling in hand, nothing compares to peaceful moments soaking up magical displays in your very own oasis of tranquillity.
