Beaches in Flushing

Whether it’s a short stroll or a short ferry ride, there are some beautiful beaches in and around Flushing that are just waiting for sunny days and sandy toes.

Flushing beach – Also known as Trefusis beach, this small rocky beach is great for a quick dip or run around with the dog without venturing away from Flushing. It’s worth remembering that it disappears at high tide though so make sure to check the tide times before packing up the beach towel and sunscreen.

Mylor beach – A short walk inland from Flushing, Mylor beach is a lovely shingle beach with stunning views out across the estuary towards St Just in Roseland. Rockpools will keep the kids entertained while the close proximity to Mylor makes it the perfect spot for an ice cream (or two) by the water.

Gyllyngvase beach – A short ferry ride along Fal River will get you to one of Falmouth’s most popular and well-known beaches. Gyllyngvase (Gylly for short) beach has everything you could possibly want from a beach including a beach-side restaurant, café, and volleyball net!

Swanpool beach – Another favourite in the Falmouth area, Swanpool is a haven for watersports enthusiasts! Coasteering, kayaking and SUPing are just some of the marine activities you can enjoy before making the short walk up to Hooked on the Rocks where you can tuck into a delicious meal while watching the glittering ocean.

Things to do in Flushing

From the village itself with its iconic bowling green complete with a pirate ship play area, to the surrounding area full of coastal views and historic sites, there is plenty to do in Flushing.

Shopping – While Flushing only has one general store, across the water lies the vibrant shops of Falmouth that range from unique boutiques like Parade, Dizzy and The Black Pearl to the usual big names like FatFace and Anns Cottage. You’ll also find a wonderfully satisfying number of bakeries, so a Cornish pasty is never beyond reach!

Boat trips – The busy waterways surrounding Flushing mean the car can stay put during your holiday. Ferries will take you to Falmouth, St Mawes and even Truro as you tour the beautiful area from the water.

Gardens – Blooming in South Cornwall’s mild climate, several gardens provide a simply stunning place for a stroll. Almost on the doorstep of Flushing are the captivating Enys Gardens with its bluebell displays and pretty ponds. Further afield you can visit the National Trust owned Glendurgan Gardens or the privately-owned Trebah Gardens, both of which provide glorious displays of local and tropical plants as you wander down to their own private beaches.

Walks – Perched on the edge of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, it’s of little surprise that the surrounding coast and countryside are full of beautiful walks. Our favourite has to be the simple but endlessly spectacular circular walk from Flushing to Mylor Churchtown (or Mylor Bridge if you want a longer stretch of the legs) that takes in gorgeous cross-country scenes as well as views across the waters of Fal River and beyond.

Pendennis Castle – Situated high above Falmouth overlooking the town and the entrance to the Carrick Roads, Pendennis Castle has been standing guard for nearly 500 years and still provides a breath-taking sight. Tour the weapons of war or climb up to the top of the keep to test your eyesight as you look for passing vessels or local wildlife.

Dining out – Is there anything better than visiting somewhere new, stumbling across a fantastic pub or restaurant, filling up and heading back to your holiday home with a full stomach and memories of a great evening? In Flushing, you have several superb places to choose from including the aptly named The Waterside and The Royal Standard where dogs are welcome and everyone can sit down to some traditional pub grub in a relaxed and friendly setting. Of course, a quick boat trip will get you to Falmouth where plenty of restaurants and bars cater to every taste from African to American to The Caribbean.

What's on in Flushing

One of the many villages surrounding Carrick Roads estuary to enjoy an annual regatta and with Falmouth just across the water, there are lots of events in Flushing with which to fill your holiday calendar.

Flushing Arts Week – May comes alive with creativity in Flushing as the village spends a whole week celebrating local artists and their work. Art goes up on display throughout the village in pubs and residents’ windows, giving everyone the chance to see what’s being created in the area.

Flushing Regatta – Making the most of its prime waterside location, Flushing takes to the water in July for its annual regatta week. You’ll see well-known sports such as rowing and swimming and lesser-known sports like bathtub racing and sandcastle construction, all culminating with a spectacular carnival on the Saturday night.

Falmouth International Sea Shanty Festival – There’s just something so enjoyable about gathering around and singing sea shanties, even if you don’t know all (or any of) the words – especially when the ale is flowing! At Falmouth’s famous sea shanty festival, you can party like a pirate as you dance to the very best jigs the bands have to offer.

Falmouth Week – Nothing beats a town-wide celebration that lasts for the whole week, especially when there are fireworks, parades, and air shows involved! Dance the night away with the lineup of live music, check out the markets for a collection of trinkets and local foodie treats and turn your gaze skywards to watch the impressive aerial acrobatics of the Red Arrows.

Getting around

When your holiday takes you to the peaceful banks of the Fal River there’s little reason to hop in the car as ferries and water taxis can get you where you want to go while enjoying a much prettier route. You can also use them to visit Flushing for the day by parking in Falmouth and getting the ferry over, which works well considering Flushing doesn’t have its own car park.
