Holidays in Charlestown

A visit to Charlestown on the south coast of Cornwall is perhaps the closest you can get to stepping back in time to Poldark’s Cornwall. Located on the outskirts of the town of St Austell, Charlestown is an unspoilt Cornish village and fishing port with a Grade II listed harbour.

The historic port of Charlestown is ideally placed for exploring the south west coast path, with incredible views of the Fowey Estuary and St Austell Bay, and stunning beaches to discover nearby. Charlestown itself has an excellent choice of gift shops, pubs and restaurants, plus its own small shingle beach. The harbour is home to some impressive tall ships, which you may have spotted in scenes from Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland, or BBC’s Poldark. The area is steeped in history and remains quite unspoilt to this day.

Did you know...

Charlestown was famously used for the filming of Poldark!

Beaches near Charlestown

Charlestown Beach is a small south facing sandy beach with an area of pebbles of geological interest. This is a lovely little beach for sun bathing and paddling.

Duporth Beach is a privately owned sandy cove, just a short walk on the cliff path from Charlestown. Direct access to this beach is restricted to residents, so the coastal path is the best way to get there. Duporth is a sheltered cove which is great for swimming and kayaking.

Porthpean Beach is a popular sandy beach which can be accessed via the coastal path from Charlestown. There’s plenty of space for beach games and sandcastle building and it’s a great spot for swimming. Porthpean is popular with windsurfers and there’s also a golf course near the beach. Dogs are welcome on this beach except between May 1st and 31st August (10am-6pm) when a seasonal dog ban is in place.
