Compass Cottage is an archetypal, reverse level, Cornish cottage that exudes charm and character and is located just a few yards from the sandy beach at Porthleven It has two comfortable bedrooms with heat pumps that provide heating and air-conditioning. The master bedroom has a super-king sized bed and an en-suite shower room. The twin room is next to a separate bathroom. The wonderfully sunny conservatory and garden enjoy enveloping skies and extensive views of the sea as it stretches to the horizon. This is a great spot to sit and enjoy your morning coffee or to sit and watch the sun set over West Penwith in the distance. The sitting-room has a heat pump which is large enough to heat the kitchen as well. Filled with original features and with all the home comforts, getting away from it all and relaxing are the only things that need to be on your agenda. On cooler evenings, there will be nothing cosier than retreating in front of the wood-burner and unfurling on the comfy sofas with a favourite book, before retiring to one of the sumptuous beds for a peaceful night’s sleep.

With sea views and private parking, Compass Cottage ticks all the boxes for a great escape from the pressures of everyday life. Spend days exploring the tiny fishing villages and nearby towns or walking the coastal path, and evenings tucking into homemade dishes or frequenting one of the many pubs and restaurants in the village. Adrenaline enthusiasts can take to the waves by swimming, surfing, kayaking or coasteering with local guides. The turquoise water and secret coves make this area the perfect playground for adventure. For those wanting to unwind, pop the kettle on, sit back, relax, and take in the panoramic coastal views from the sunny garden, from where you might even spot a seal or a dolphin at the harbour mouth.

Holidays in Porthleven

Whatever you love about Cornwall, we’re sure you'll find it while enjoying a holiday in Porthleven. Relax and enjoy the boats bobbing in the harbour, pull on the walking boots and join the coastal path to Rinsey and Praa Sands, take a short drive to nearby Marazion and the iconic St Michael's Mount, or hit the waves and surf until sunset.

This charming fishing town has a relaxing atmosphere; it's gorgeous in the Summer and dramatic during the Winter. The granite harbour and pier with its famous clock tower has become an iconic storm-watching spot during wild wintry weather and offers a tranquil setting on calmer days.

Take a short break out of season in Porthleven and avoid the hubbub on the roads and beaches. Soak up the sun on the harbour front and watch the fishing boats pass by. Catch the first glimpses of colour from the acres of Cornish daffodils in early spring with the sea as a back drop as you drive from coast to coast. With easy access to the coastal footpath, head east to discover Gunwalloe Fishing Cove, Polurnan Cliffs and Mullion Cove or head west and marvel at Praa Sands, Perranuthnoe and Marazion.

Take a short walk from Porthleven and reach the coarse sand of Porthleven beach, reaching two miles south as far as Loe Bar, a sand spit separating the sea and forming Loe Pool, the largest freshwater lake in Cornwall.

Porthleven harbour is an enjoyable place to relax, with its cafés, pubs and restaurants providing the perfect place for you to sit outside and watch the world float by!

Top tip

Like storm watching? Visit in winter and you may be lucky enough to experience huge waves crashing over the clock tower!

We enjoyed a lovely week at Compass Cottage , the cottage was well equipped with absolutely everything we could possibly need , spotlessly clean , lovely bedding and fluffy towels , great location and sea views and we had great weather ! Plenty of great places to eat and drink and we highly recommend the Atlantic Inn, we will definitely be back !

This was our second visit to Compass Cottage and we were pleased that it was very clean and freshly painted, and the fitted carpeted areas had been updated. We enjoy the homely feel with personal touches of decorations and Persian rugs throughout. There is everything you need like Tea, coffee, sugar, salt and pepper and loads of herbs, hand soap, toilet paper, cleaning materials etc to start you off. We loved the surprise of a full cream tea left in the fridge as a welcome gift. The instructions are very helpful on the various eco heating systems and there are manuals for everything in the cottage. It was appreciated to have underfloor heating in the en-suite bathroom which we put on for a short time in the morning. The shower is really spacious and the towels were good quality. The super king bed was very comfortable with a lovely light but warm duvet with quality bedding. I liked the small room off the main bedroom which had a desk with mirror where I could sit to do hair and make-up with good light from the window and a modern desk light. There are comfy sofas in the spacious sitting room with a great smart tv and off of this room we used the lovely light filled conservatory with great view sea views and warm when the weather isn’t so good. The sofa in the conservatory is very sagged and not very comfortable although passable with lots of cushions in your back. There are other chairs anyway and a small desk which is useful if you need to work on a laptop and enjoy the view at the same time. The garden is lovely with the same sea views and we used the table and chairs a lot as we were lucky with fine weather and you feel quite private although further out on the grass area you can look down on people who were occasionally in the next door lower garden but we found it very quiet.

Welcome back to Compass Cottage! We are so pleased you had another lovely stay in Porthleven, and that you enjoyed your surprise Cream Tea!

It's great to hear that you found the majority of furniture to be really comfortable, though it is a shame the conservatory sofa was not to your liking. This feedback has been passed along to the property owner for them to take into consideration for future improvements.

We hope we can welcome you back to Compass Cottage again for another holiday! Katy, Customer Services.

We thoroughly enjoyed our Porthleven week at Compass Cottage. Every need is cared for and the accommodation is much more ‘home’ than holiday home; tucked away in a quiet area with easy walking access to harbour, beach and village amenities. Quite a gem!

A great cottage in fab location. So good we booked 3 weeks next year shortly after arrival. The owners have gone out of their way to make Compass Cottage special.

We had a great stay at Compass Cottage. The top floor is spacious and comfortable, with a lovely flow from conservatory to garden and into the kitchen.

The beds were really comfortable and the bedding and towels of good quality. It was useful to have a dryer and heated towel rails when the weather was wet. We really appreciated the range of herbs and spices supplied as we cook a lot.

We spent a lot of time in the garden and conservatory as the views are lovely. It’s a lovely property to stay in.

We had a beautiful sunny week at Compass Cottage, our 2nd time, after staying there for the 1st time and the same week last year!!… This is the most lovely, comfortable, clean and very well equipped cottage - spacious, well furnished and maintained - a log burner (although we didn’t need to light it this year) - all the household, cleaning, cloths and laundry products provided - fully stocked crockery, cutlery, pans and utensils - lovely soft towels - and a lovely welcome gift of cream teas and milk!!… Compass Cottage is topped off with a lovely conservatory with sea views, and the patio and garden are super with sun all day long and beautiful sea views too, with only the sounds of the waves and the gulls!!… We don’t think that many cottages could beat this and we highly recommend it!!… Our hearts are here in Porthleven and this beautiful cottage, our “Cornish Home From Home”, is a special part of it - we hope to return yet again!!…

We loved the layout and comfort of this property and the sea view from the conservatory. We wish we had taken binoculars with us as we would have been able to see the lights of Mousehole from the conservatory. The location was great, very quiet traffic wise yet a short stroll from the harbour and town which has lots of interesting shops and places to eat.

Another very enjoyable stay but sadly after staying at compass cottage for many years it will be our last due to the ridiculous price increase for next year.

We are so sorry to hear that you would not return to this property. The pricing for this particular property next year, was completely at the discretion of this property owner, which he had based on other similar properties in that location. We would be happy to discuss other options with you if Compass Cottage is definitely out of the question for next year though. Please feel free to speak to one of the bookings team. Tanya, Customer Services

The cottage is in a great location with added benefit of off street parking. It was good to have the conservatory to still have sea views on not so good days and the patio area was sheltered for better days. The facilities of the cottage including Smart TVs , Phone chargers and kitchen equipment was excellent. All in all a good holiday and good value.

Very large cottage suitable for four adults with two separate bathrooms, one ensuite. I would opine that it is not suitable for those with mobility issues or small children. It is in a great location with sweeping views out to sea from the conservatory or outside space and the photos don’t really do it justice. Overall it was very clean and a small issue with the shower drain was resolved quickly. Garden is OK, lawn is more or less dead though (due to the lack of rain probably). Parking is a boon in Porthleven but you will struggle if you have anything larger than a Ford Mondeo (our car) as people park immediately opposite the entrance with makes getting in and out very tight. TIP. Always turn right when exiting. Only one car space and again this was tight for my Mondeo. Internet access is hit and miss. The router needs replacing methinks as it looks like one of Talk Talk’s original models! The oven could also do with updating (or at least the knobs replacing!) and it could do with a decent internal clean. Extractor fan in the ensuite doesn’t work and we couldn’t understand the heated towel rail in the ensuite either. We didn’t highlight these at the time because we didn’t want to have to have them resolved whilst we were staying and they didn’t detract from the excellent experience that we had at Compass Cottage. Spent lots of time in the conservatory looking out to sea (but the settee could do with replacing or springs/cushions renewed). We would return in a heartbeat next year (although the price has almost doubled so we have booked a different cottage). Been to various eating places this year and last and reviewed these separately. Small supermarket in town which has most essentials and also a very expensive fishmonger (if you want fish and are in Newlyn go to Trelawneys on the front or any of the fishmongers along there). We love Porthleven and will be in town again next year.

With those stone steps into the property and the advertised narrow and steep stairs in the property, this would certainly be something to consider before booking, for those with more limited mobility, or young children. We try to show/describe this as best as we can on the website, but the team here are happy to answer any questions to those interested in booking. Sadly, with the hosepipe bans, we have not been allowed to water the lawns or jetwash outside areas, so many gardens and outside areas are not at their best, but we are all trying to do our bit and be careful with the limited resources. Thanks for the helpful feedback on the parking space. we try to show the space on the photos to give an idea of size, but we will monitor feedback on this, and add further details if we need to have anything more specific on the description of the space. We will also monitor the wifi. We are not aware of previous issues, so it may have been a one-off issue with the service provider, rather than with the router itself and we will check your other points when we inspect the property next, which is due to take place soon. We are sorry that we won't be seeing back at this property again next year, due to the owners new pricing for next year, but we hope that we will still have the pleasure of seeing you back in Porthleven again. Tanya, Customer Services

6th time at Compass Cottage and sadly our last due to the steep price increase for next year.

Compass is a great cottage, in a great location, with great views, ideal for exploring the Lizard and parking is a bonus.

One minor quibble, cleanliness wasn't up to the previous high standard.

Still had a great holiday!

We are sorry to hear that you will not be returning after so many visits there. There will always be a bit of an increase in prices each year but any additional increase over and above our recommendations are at the discretion of the individual property owners. The prices are still comparable to other properties in that area, but we appreciate that when you have been used to paying a certain amount, it will be disappointing. We were also really sorry to read that there were areas of cleaning that were not up to the standards that you would expect. It is the same housekeeper, so this certainly isn't the norm and we will make sure that your feedback is followed up with them. We hope that we may still have the opportunity to welcome you back here in Cornwall again, and if you would like any assistance/advice, please do not hesitate to get in touch with us.
