Holidays in Porthtowan

Porthtowan is the ideal location to enjoy a self catering holiday in Cornwall. With scenic coastal path walks and a tidal pool hidden in the cliffs, Porthtowan proves to be the perfect base to explore the surrounding north coast. The village provides your daily essentials and there is a charming pub, beachside bar and surf hire.

Situated between St Ives and Newquay, Porthtowan is well located for those looking to visit these popular coastal towns. It’s also secluded enough to escape the crowds and relax in a hidden area of Cornwall. Close to Perranporth and St Agnes, Porthtowan is perfect for exploring the sandy beaches in this area and enjoying the stunning views along the South West Coast Path.

Did you know...

'Porth' means 'beach' and 'towan' means 'dunes' in Cornish.

Surfing in Porthtowan

Close to the rugged cliffs and a stunning sandy beach, yet sheltered by adjoining rolling fields; Porthtowan is in the heartland of traditional Cornwall. There is a vibrant surf scene in the village with a nearby surf school, surf hire facilities and lots of opportunity to enjoy outdoor pursuits. Although secluded, you’re also close to Newquay and Portreath which are both renowned surf spots. Read more on our blog about surf spots in Cornwall.

Eating out in Porthtowan

The Blue Bar beachside restaurant sits literally on the beach and serves delicious meals and bar snacks. There is plenty of outdoor seating where you can enjoy watching the waves and is exceptionally beautiful in the evening as the sun sets.

Nearby, you also have two pubs; the 17th century Victory Inn, and the Unicorn, both serving up fresh local food.

Walks around Porthtowan

Situated on the South West Coast Path, Porthtowan is ideal for those looking to explore. Coastal walks in this area offer stunning ocean views but venture inland and you’ll find many examples of Cornwall’s mining heritage. Take the circular walk from Porthtowan to Chapel Porth and you’ll find Wheal Coates engine house and the mining remains of Chapel Combe.

There are seasonal dog restrictions on Porthtowan beach between 15th May and 30th September between the hours of 10am and 6pm. Outside of these hours it is dog friendly as well as being dog friendly between 1st October and 14th May. If you do bring a dog, the nearby beach of Bassett’s Cove is to the west of Porthtowan and allows dogs on the beach all year round.

We love Towan Valley, Trelawney is a perfect holiday home- it has everything you could possibly need. Thank you for a wonderful stay.

Trelawney is a great base from which to explore Cornwall's coast. The cottage is very comfortable, with all you could need. The kitchen is well equiped to cook a meal. The Hot tub is a lovely added bonus to relax in after a day's exploring. And there is plenty of outdoor space for dining alfresco. Aspect holidays were very helpful and responsive and we found the whole booking very easy and the arrival instructions and directions very clear and helpful. The beach is a 5 to 10 minute walk away....and there is a lovely coffee shop and ice cream parlour on the way...as well as two pubs/restaurants.....we really enjoyed our stay and would stay again. Thank you.

Stunning accommodation and location. Everything you could want is either provided or on your doorstep - or, you can always pop in to Newquay for a bit of retail therapy, which is only about a 30 minute drive. Would also recommend a visit to Godvery, which is absolutely stunning, and the cider factory is worth a visit too. Then there's the lovely local beach for relaxing, playing & surfing. What's not to love!

Had a fabulous week with friends exploring the southern tip of Cornwall.

There are dramatic clifftop walks and scenery right on your doorstep.

We enjoyed strolling down to the seafront and made good use of the local bars and restaurants.

The house is beautifully decorated and comfortable, and the jacuzzi in the garden was a truly relaxing and welcoming experience, especially after a day’s walking .

The kitchen is very well appointed, ideal for making a hearty meal if not heading for the Blue Bar.

Fantastic holiday home. Comfortable and spacious with all the amenities you might need during your holiday. The location was excellent for trips throughout Cornwall. Porthtowan is small, but perfectly formed. We had a wonderful holiday!

We had a fantastic week at Trelawney, such a lovely property, equipped with everything you could need. So peaceful in the back garden I could have stayed there all week! Just a five minute downhill walk to a fantastic beach. Will definitely be back!

We (a family of 5) spent a week in Trelawney and enjoyed every minute. Quite and calm, lovely decorated and equipped with everything you need to have a perfect holiday. Restaurants with good food are within a couple of minutes walking and the beach is perfect either for swimming and bodyboarding. On rainy days, we were lucky to have the hot tub to warm up after a day on the beach. Definitely a place we have on our list to come back.

Great location base to discover Cornwall. Towan Valley Beach lovely but dogs only allowed outside 10am to 6pm during Summer. Blu Bar lovely for drink at sunset, Cafe & Surf shop open in the mornings, Fish & Chip shop open most evenings. Small convenience store with most of what you need. Good location once you get down through the valley.

Great location 5 minutes to the beach.nice outside space with hot tub. Very nicely furnished well stocked kitchen

This was our second visit and it did not disappoint. Trelawney is like home from home and Porthtowan has everything you need for a fantastic family break. It was nice to spend this visit enjoying the surrounding area and the beautiful coastal walks. We will definitely be back!

Lovely accomodaton - spacious, clean and very comfortable. The hot tub was a bonus as it was winter. The beach and village were an easy 5min walk downhill.

We did not want to leave! What a truly lovely relaxing holiday home. Trelawney was so spacious yet cosy, we enjoyed the property so much it was hard to tear ourselves away to the beach. The decor was lovely, and the kitchen had everything we needed for our Sunday roast. The hot tub and landscaped gardens really were the cherry on the cake. I don't remember the last time I relaxed this much. Fingers crossed I will be back next year!

Another excellent stay, loving the new garden. Will definately return again.

Fantastic location - walking distance to beach whilst also being easy to drive further afield, spacious accommodation & lovely hot tub - perfect holiday ??

Couldn’t fault this property. It has everything and more that you’ll need. Perfect location for a perfect holiday.

Had a wonderful stay at Trelawney. All very stylishly furnished with everything you need for a comfortable stay. Great spot for enjoying the north coast. The newly re-designed garden was a real boon to enjoy the good weather and the hot tub. A relaxing stay with walks to the beach.

A perfect holiday home, we love coming here, it really is like home from home.

Absolutely amazing accommodation. Far exceeded our expectations and the Christmas tree was a lovely addition to an already stunning property. Comes with everything you need for a great family break. Can't recommend enough.

We had a wonderful stay at Trelawney. It's close proximity to the beach and cliff walks mads this an ideal holiday location. The house was comfortable, beautifully decorated, and very clean. We would highly recommend and hope to return.

Very comfortable and well appointed holiday home in a great location. Hot tub is a great bonus at the end of a day exploring the Cornish coast.

We have just returned from a relaxing and enjoyable holiday at Trelawney. The house is beautifully presented, clean, comfortable and very well equipped - it had everything we needed. Being able to relax in the hot tub after a long walk was much appreciated ??.

We absolutely loved our holiday at Trelawney. The house is perfect for families and has a lovely homely feel. The location is perfect, and the beach is walkable. We will be back again soon.

We all had a fabulous holiday and Trelawney lived up to expectations. The house was a home away from home and had everything we needed. With the added bonus of excellent weather we were able to explore the area on foot, with lots to see. Would certainly return.

Trelawney is the perfect location for a family holiday with its close proximity to the beautiful beach, shops and restaurants. The property is like a home from home, very clean and very well equipped. We would recommend this property to anyone and hope to be back ourselves one day soon!

Fantastic lodge, very well equipped and decorated to a high standard. Would highly recommend.

Great holiday we would definitely come back. Surfing at Porthtowan beach and hot tub were definitely a great addition to a family break.

I cannot recommend this accommodation highly enough. Everything looked new and stylish and very clean. The furnishings and bedding were great. There was lots of information available both before the holiday and in the house when we arrived. There are lots of walks locally and the surfing looked excellent although we are not surfers. Other good beaches are within 20 minutes drive. I will certainly return to Trelawney.
