Samphire Cottage, named after the herb of Saint Peter, is a quaint traditional fisherman’s cottage tucked along a cobbled lane in the heart of Mevagissey fishing village. Dating back to the 1700s, the cottage is rich in character and authentic coastal soul, lovingly renovated by its artist owners and filled with bespoke furnishings and thoughtful design touches throughout. Set over three levels, this historic cottage opens into a open-plan kitchen, perfectly equipped for preparing meals using fresh local sourced ingredients. The first floor offers a warm and welcoming living space to relax by the wood-burner, while the top floor is home to a cosy, bright bedroom nestled beneath the eaves, with views across the rooftops of the village.

Just a stone’s throw from one of Cornwall’s most picturesque harbours, it is an ideal romantic retreat for couples seeking a peaceful and characterful escape. Food lovers and seafood enthusiasts will be spoilt for choice, with a great selection of local restaurants showcasing the best of Cornish cuisine just moments away. Alternatively, lace up your walking boots and explore the nearby South West Coast Path, where breathtaking scenery awaits and you can pause along the way at a traditional pub for a local beer or ale. Nature lovers may even be rewarded with sightings of dolphins, seals, and coastal birdlife.

Additional information

The cottage is traditional in design and set over three open-plan levels, with an internal staircase rising to the living area and bedroom. We advise taking care when using the stairs as they are very narrow. Due to the location, being up a quaint cobbled lane, you are unable to drive up to the property, which can only be accessed on foot, therefore it may be unsuitable for those with limited mobility. The owners have provided a handy wheeled trolley to aid with transporting your luggage. Parking is available at Willow Coach Car Park (PL26 6SX), which is approximately 7 minutes on foot. Here you can buy a permit on arrival, WiFi, one well behaved dog, short breaks available.

Holidays in Mevagissey

Stay in Mevagissey and you’ll be perfectly placed to explore all that the south coast of Cornwall has to offer. Take a ferry trip to Fowey, visit the Lost Gardens of Heligan or spend a day at the beach at the nearby Pentewan Sands.

Best known for its harbour and fishing boats, Mevagissey still boasts as being part of Cornwall’s thriving fishing industry. Fresh fish can even be bought from the hut on the harbour wall, located a short stroll from the village aquarium, once the lifeboat station. Wander around the harbour area, with its narrow streets, fascinating shops and galleries and recall its smuggling history, or just relax in the bars and restaurants and coves and on nearby beaches.

There is a ferry boat which runs from end of April to beginning of October from Mevagissey to Fowey three or four times a day (don’t miss the return journey!) – journey time about 35 minutes. You may be lucky and spot some playful dolphins!
