Taking on the UK's top escape room at Enigma Escape in Cornwall

Recently, we were lucky enough to be invited to try out Enigma Escape’s award-winning escape room in Cornwall. And with Halloween on the horizon, it felt like the perfect opportunity to test our smarts… and mettle!

Hidden down a cobblestone street in Truro, Enigma Escape offers several chin-scratching rooms, each with its own set of unique puzzles to solve. We were thrilled to take on Fear of the Unknown, voted the number one escape room in the UK by UK Escape Room Awards in 2026! A suitably sinister twist on the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, this immersive story is 90 minutes of adrenaline-fuelled fun and seemingly endless puzzles, and we couldn’t wait to get started.

From the moment we arrived and descended the appropriately spooky steps to the underground attraction, we knew we were in for a treat (or trick), as owners Oli and Megan have created an incredible space with every detail carefully planned and executed. A wall of hats, from felted favourites to classic deerstalkers, encouraged us to get into character, while the locked chest for our phones and watches ensured we enjoyed our time without distractions. After a quick yet thorough briefing, we were ready to take on the challenge and face our fears… or so we hoped…

We would love to tell you all about our super spooky experience, as each puzzle presented an in-depth challenge worthy of a monologue or two. But alas, we will refrain, as this escape room is best enjoyed spoiler-free. To give you an idea of what to expect, we spent an hour and a half (which went by in an ominous blur) turning the rooms upside down and inside out, hunting for clues, cracking codes, and braving the inescapable fact that we would have to stick our hands into dark holes in the name of victory.

And triumph we did! We were absolutely thrilled to achieve the best possible outcome (out of three), although we would honestly have been happy with any ending - it’s definitely about the journey and not the destination.

From the incredible set dressing to the puzzles themselves, no detail was too small for Oli and Megan. They have crafted an incredible, story-driven game that will leave you wanting more, with spine-tingling audio and visuals and just enough jump scares to keep you on your toes.

Senior Content Writer, Annie, had an amazing time trying to solve the room’s challenging puzzles, saying: “What an absolute blast! I had no idea what I was walking into, and it made the whole experience even better. Every twist and turn was so well thought out, and I can’t believe how quickly the 90 minutes went. I wish I could wipe my memory and do it all over again!”

Whether you’re a fan of old-school sci-fi and creepy clues or a more entry-level room, Enigma Escape has something for everyone beneath the streets of Truro. Fear of the Unknown welcomes everyone from age 12 and up, while the other rooms are suitable for ages 8 and up. Gather friends and family; this is a Cornish experience best enjoyed together!
