Holidays in Fal River

The Fal River travels approximately 29km before feeding into the Fal Estuary, the largest estuary in Cornwall. Surrounded by a National Landscape (formerly Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty), this stunning stretch of water boasts a calming and inspirational environment, rich in wildlife. Flowing past coastal fortresses, historic estates, picturesque villages and quiet creeks, it’s a true oasis of calm.

There are so many ways to enjoy this magical area, whether you choose to explore the landscape on foot or by boat. Breathtaking walks lead you along the river’s edge, through peaceful countryside, picturesque villages and woodland pathways. While spectacular waterways give you the chance to experience the area from a completely different perspective.

The gentle waters of the river provide the ideal location for trying out a range of watersports, including stand up paddleboarding, kayaking and sailing. Whether you choose to hire equipment or go on a guided tour, you’ll get to experience the beauty and bliss of being on the water in this magical setting.

Did you know...

the Fal Estuary is a ria, a river valley that was flooded at the end of the last ice age when the sea levels rose?

Gardens and historic buildings

Trelissick Garden

Set in an impressive estate on its own peninsula, the imposing Trelissick house, built in 1755, boasts panoramic views across the Fal Estuary. Owned by the National trust, visitors can experience the beauty of this magical setting. The stunning grounds and gardens, which include woodland walks, formal lawns and exotic plants, are open throughout the year, while the house is open seasonally.

St Mawes Castle

Built in the 1540’s, St Mawes Castle is one of the best-preserved of Henry VIII's coastal artillery fortresses, built to counter an invasion threat from Catholic France and Spain. Part of the English Heritage collection, visitors today can step back in time to learn how the castle defended this area of Cornwall.

Pendennis Castle

Also owned by the English Heritage, and sister castle to St Mawes Castle, Pendennis Castle is another fine example of a seaside fortress. Brought to life with events throughout the year, visitors have the chance to travel back to Tudor Cornwall and discover the history of this iconic fortress.

Lamorran Gardens

Located on the Roseland Peninsula, Lamorran Gardens is a subtropical paradise, inspired by the owners' adventures to Italy. Thanks to the balmy microclimate along this stretch of Cornwall, exotic plants thrive amid the tranquillity of this special place.

Boat trips and watersports

Enterprise Boats

They also run regular ferry services from Falmouth to St Mawes and Flushing, giving you the chance to stop off and explore these popular riverside spots.

Loe Beach Watersports Cornwall

Discover the idyllic, calm waters of Loe Beach, a small shingle beach with views across the estuary. It’s the perfect spot to take to the water, with equipment hire and lessons available to book at Loe Beach Watersports Cornwall. Choose from paddleboarding, kayaking, sailing and powerboating.

Falmouth River Watersports

Located at Mylor Yacht Harbour, Falmouth River Watersports is based in a fantastic location for exploring the Fal River. Whether you’re experienced on the water and want to hire some kit while on holiday, or if you’re a beginner looking for lessons, they offer both. They also run guided tours, including a ‘Paddle and pub tour’, and all activities are dog-friendly!
