Holidays in Crantock

Crantock is a beautiful area just outside Newquay and offers everything you need for a holiday by the sea; a beautiful sandy beach, eateries close by and coastal walks on the doorstep.

Situated to the Western side of the Gannel Estuary, Crantock is ideally located for a peaceful holiday, just a stone's throw from Newquay.  Enjoy a relaxing holiday within easy reach of the beautiful beach.

Not far from the beach, you'll find Crantock Village, a small but popular village, dating back to 460 AD, founded by Irish Hermits. The local pub, The Albion Inn, with its fascinating history is well worth a visit. Find out more about it here.

Top tip

Bring your pooches with you because Crantock is super dog-friendly!

Beaches

Owned and looked after by the National Trust, Crantock beach offers a large expanse of golden sands, backed by rolling dunes. The beach stretches between Pentire and West Pentire headlands. To the South, the sands are lined with high cliffs, providing shelter from the winds and to the North lies the mouth of the River Gannel.

At high tide, the Fern Pit Gannel Ferry, 'Sunshine', will take you from the beach across the river; at low tide, a small footbridge will appear allowing you to cross the river for free. The River Gannel is popular with paddle boarders and wild water swimmers.

The National Trust car park has ample space and is free of charge for National Trust members. Dogs are welcome all year on Crantock beach.

Just beyond West Pentire, you'll find Porth Joke beach (also known as Poly Joke beach) a smaller, quieter beach. With rock pools and caves, this beach is perfect for explorers of all ages. The car park is a fair walk away, but well worth the effort for the peaceful sands.

Things to do in Crantock

In Crantock, you can relax on the quiet beach or explore the quaint village, filled with thatched cottages. If you're feeling more adventurous, you can try a range of water sports such as paddle boarding with Newquay Water Sports Centre

Aside from the glorious golden sands and picturesque village of Crantock, you can head to West Pentire to the C-Bay hotel which has tennis courts, a swimming pool and is dog friendly.

Further afield, Newquay has an array of activities on offer. For a family-friendly activity, Newquay Zoo and the Blue Reef Aquarium make a great day out. For something slightly different, head to Pirate's Quest for a swashbuckling voyage through Cornwall's past. Read our blog here for more ideas on days out in Newquay

Also near West Pentire you'll find C-Bay Bistro with unsurpassed views across Crantcok beach and beyond.

Walks around Crantock

There are lots of places to walk in and around Crantock.

If you head to Crantock Beach via Rushy Green you can either walk across the beach, or take the coast path towards West Pentire, which in the spring/early summer is filled with poppies - a beautiful sight!

The Granary is a fantastic place for a break or full blown holiday. This is our third visit and I hope there will be more.

We had a great stay at The Granary in September. It is a lovely, quiet apartment - very big with a really comfortable bed. It is well positioned for travelling around the area. There is a big Morrisons just up the road so no need to go into the supermarkets in Newquay. The apartment is around a 20 minute walk along the road from the centre of Crantock - you will need to use a torch in the evening - or you can take the coastal path - it is a lovely walk but may not be suitable if you have mobility issues. The walk behind the apartment from West Pentire to Polly Joke and onto Holywell Bay was just lovely. It was fabulous being able to use the pool across the road.

The beach at Crantock is lovely as is the village. We had a lovely meal at The Old Albion Inn - and a real bonus when we were there was that the music festival was on for three nights - some great acts and a fabulous atmosphere with people dancing in the street.

We had a lovely meal at the C Bay - would definitely go there again. We also had a meal at The Bowgie Inn - I would not return there for dinner but for lunch/drinks it is perfect.

Our only issue with the apartment is that, although there is a washing machine and a rotary clothesline to use outside in the Summer, there is no tumble drier and, strangely, no clothes horse so I was unable to do any washing. The washing machine could really do with being replaced with a washer/dryer or, at the very minimum, a clothes horse needs to be provided. The bathroom also needs a bit of TLC. That said, we would definitely have no hesitation in staying at the apartment again.

As usual, very happy with the service we received from Aspects Holidays - this was our sixth booking - we are already booked for June next year - just need to sort out September.

Thank you ever so much for your feedback, we are so delighted you had such a wonderful stay at The Granary. It was great to see that you made such a good use of the property's excellent location, using it as a base to explore all that the nearby area has to offer. We were so sorry to see that you were unable to do any washing without a tumble dryer or drying rack, though we would have of course dropped a rack to you, had we been made aware at the time. We have passed on your recommendation for a washer dryer onto the owners, alongside your feedback about the bathroom for their consideration. Thanks again for your review, we are already looking forward to welcoming you back to Cornwall again. Ben, Customer Services.

Great location and access to the pool is a real bonus

What a little gem of a place ! Spotlessly clean ! Super comfy bed ! Amazing views of Crantock beach ! We spent many hours watching the tide come in and go out from the lounge window! Absolutely loved our stay here . The owner of the property made us and our two beagles feel so welcome . Everything was just perfect for us , the costal walks of west Pentire are breathtaking and the walk across the beach when the tide out is lovely ! Would I recommend this holiday accommodation! !, YES ! Five out of five stars for us Greenwoods , we will most definitely be booking it again x

Another wonderful stay at The Granary in West Pentire. This flat is so comfortable and ideally located away from the business of Newquay. Polly Joke beach is lovely particularly if you have dogs and there is The C-Bay hotel and The Bowgie Inn for meals, drinks and other facilities. If you want burgers, ice creams and all the trappings of a busy resort this probably isn’t for you, but if you want time away from all that and a bit of peace and tranquillity this is an ideal getaway. Simply lovely!

Location! We walked along the coastal path every day. We didn't move the car for 5 days. Loved Polly Joke and the seals.

We absolutely loved the Granary from the moment we went through the door. Everything was spot on and every need was catered for. The view from the windows was absolutely fantastic as was the location. Its the best location we have stayed in Cornwall and would highly recommend.

Everything as described. Enjoyed the location and holiday. Well equipped kitchen.

A quiet and comfortable apartment overlooking Crantock beach. Very clean with everything you need for the holiday . Really nice to use the swimming pool across the road . Bonus to have off road parking. Lots of walks from the apartment, watched the seals play in the surf at Polly Joke.

What a good find. Lovely apartment with parking for two cars. Great location - you can see the sea! Very quiet and two beaches within walking distance. Welcoming hosts. Will be back!

We loved our stay at the Granary. The apartment is lovely with stunning views of the bay and, probably the most comfortable bed I've ever slept in. We felt at home straight away particularly after meeting the very friendly and welcoming owners who can advise you on some great local walks and, places to go etc but are not at all intrusive. Being able to use the pool at C Bay Hotel was a massive bonus. They also do fantastic food and is a great spot for drinks with a fab view of Crantock and, beyond. West Pentire is a great base for exploring this part of Cornwall and close to a number of dog friendly beaches. We'll definitely be coming back to the Granary.

Lovely roomy cottage, in a superb location for access to Crantock and Polly Joke beaches. Poppy fields and cliff top walks a few minutes away. The C Bay cafe is just across the road and offers a good choice of excellent, locally sourced food, reasonably priced and with a wonderful view of Crantock Beach.

We had a lovely holiday in one of the top locations in Cornwall. Dog friendly as well.

A wonderful place to stay, very comfortable. Fabulous views from the windows. Polly Joke beach is 10 minutes walk away & is a lovely beach to spend the day on. Beautiful coastal walks all around. Use of the pool & jacuzzi is lovely. I highly recommend the spa for treatments. The Cbay bistro across the road serves delicious food, whether you want breakfast, lunch, a cream tea or dinner. The staff make you feel very welcome & nothing is to much trouble.

The Granary is located in a perfect spot if you enjoy walks on the coast as it’s only few minutes away. The owners are delightful and helpful with pointing you for a great local walks. The apartment is right on a doorstep from the Spa where we all enjoyed the pool very much, however it is a bit disappointing as the place is old& tired and needs a bit of work.

We love the warm old fashioned charm that The Granary wraps you in. Everything you need to feel at home is provided by the very welcoming hosts. The views from every window are just gorgeous as is the position for the beach and headland walks. The use of the indoor spa and pool are very welcome and the tennis courts with the best view ever. We didn't want to leave. Thankyou again.

The Granary is an excellent stay for those wishing to do costal walking and beach visiting. Polly Joke is a fabulous quiet beach that must be visited and seeing the seals at Kelsey Cove was an added bonus. There are beautiful views from all aspects of the Granary.

The Granary is a beautiful property in a lovely location. The views from the house are great. The owners were very friendly and helpful. The apartment was very well furnished and comfortable. Altogether this was an excellent holiday especially in view of the current circumstances. We were even lucky with the weather.

The Granary exceeded our expectations in many ways. The photo's made it look a little tired and small but it is very spacious and although the furnishings and décor are a little dated it makes it more homely and comfortable.

The location is fantastic and there is no need to leave the area - wonderful walks, beaches and eateries, a great bonus when Cornwall is busy.

We had a wonderful welcome from David and Brenda and a really happy holiday!!

When we return to Cornwall we will definitely book the Granary again.

Easy process to book the holiday through Aspect and the apartment was perfect for our holiday, everything we needed on hand and lovely hosts. Can't wait to return - five stars!

Apartment was spacious, well furnished & well equipped. Lovely, friendly owners who left home made biscuits, fresh flowers which were a lovely gesture. Views & location were stunning. Easy walk to Polly Joke beach, more of a scramble to Crantock. Fab longer walk to Holywell & Perranporth. Loved the swimming pool & jacuzzi at C Bay !! Also, the bistro was wonderful, amazing food & great ambience.

Great accommodation in the perfect location.

This is a fantastic hide-away home with superb views and marvellous walks in all directions.

The hosts were very welcoming. Very bright and plenty of space. The views from each room are amazing. Great place to take a dog. Make sure to visit Polly Joke Beach a ten minute walk and then over the headland to Holywell. Got to say the best nights sleep I have ever had so comfortable. Can't wait to return.

The Granary was a delightful place to stay. David and Brenda made us most Welcome

We had an amazing week at the granary . The views and beach were lovely . Our host were very welcoming with their touch’s flowers and tea and biscuits on our arrival . Loved staying there will definitely be back .

Fabulous location away from the hustle and bustle of Newquay. Views are excellent and a great pub on the door step.

I very much doubt you would publish this but suggest you amend the photos description and prices very soon. If I was am overseas visitor what an awful impression.

Thank you for your review, we aim to be completely honest and transparent with our property descriptions and the reviews that we publish, so all reviews received are shown on our site, with very few exceptions. We are sorry if our photos or description had caused any confusion at all; we state in the description that this property is a 'cottage style, first floor apartment', but show the whole cottage in the first image just to try and give an impression of the style of this property and the appearance of its exterior. We are really sorry that you had not been aware from this that you were not renting the entire property. We were also sorry to read that you had felt it to be expensive compared to other properties that you had rented in the past. We try to ensure that properties are priced accordingly, taking into account many factors; in this case its amazing location and fantastic additional facilities such as free use of a communal heated indoor swimming pool and a beach-side tennis court. We do take comments very seriously, and will closely monitor further feedback to see if we need to make anything clearer within the descriptions or photos, so thank you for letting us know your thoughts. Tanya, Customer Services

The property with perfect views. Fantastic location and very friendly people.

Very spacious and larger than photos suggested. Hosts very welcoming and flowers and tea on arrival was most welcome. Liked basin in each bedroom and large airing cupboard as was concerned there was no tumble dryer. Hosts were lovely and very welcoming. Email from Aspect checking we were OK in first week was a nice touch. Access to swimming pool was great. we just wish we had used it in first week. It was very clean and well looked after. Description of walk to beach not accurate and was much further than we thought. It would assist less able people better to give realistic walk times and also loose rubble/rocks under foot.

Reply from Aspects Holidays

Thank you for your very helpful comments. It certainly sounded like you had a lovely time here; we are glad that you liked it. We really appreciate you sending us your thoughts on the walk to the beach; the property team are going to review that description and amend it to make it clearer. It sounds like the coast path is approximately 100m from the property, but then you have a little walk from there on to the beach, and as you say, it is not a flat, level walk. We would always want information to be as accurate as possible, so thank you for bringing this to our attention. Thanks again and we hope to see you back here again soon. Tanya, Customer Services

Wonderful location with sea views. Quick walk to headland and beach.

Lovely cottage in a great location, especially if you like taking your dogs to the beach!

Brilliant situation Everything there that you could possibly need. Very comfortable and dog friendly, what more could you ask for. Only 10 minutes walk to Poly Joke beach and 10 min drive to Crantock beach. Use of the facilties across the road is a bonus as well. Pub just 2 mins walk as well , if you needed it

I and my friends from Germany had the loveliest stay at The Granary. We could not recommend the accommodation highly enough if you are looking for homely comfort, a stunning location, amazing sea views and a great base for coastal walking and exploring north Cornwall.

The Granary was a lovely place for a family with a dog. The property was very clean with everything we needed for our stay. Beautiful beaches (dogs allowed on them) in a short walking distance (great for the family and dog!). Children loved the use of the swimming pool and tennis courts opposite the property which are kept in excellent condition and weren't very busy (often had the pool to ourselves). Nearby pub has an outside seating area which allows dogs and has lovely views.
