A boat trip from Mousehole

A boat sails out of a Cornish harbour.

There’s something truly special about the coastal village of Mousehole, with its quaint cottages and cobbled lanes that date back centuries. Shaped around its harbour and a history rich in fishing, one of the best ways to experience Mousehole and the surrounding coastline is from the sea.

If you’re staying at one of our cottages in or close to Mousehole, we recommend booking a boat trip with Cormorant Cruising for a chance to see the village from a different perspective. Berthed on the North Pier of Mousehole harbour, Cormorant Cruising offers just that on their 12-person vessel, the ‘Cormorant’. We were delighted to be invited to experience their popular wildlife and coastal cruise for ourselves, departing from Mousehole.

On arrival, we were greeted by the wonderfully knowledgeable Neil, Captain, Skipper and Tour Guide of the Cormorant. After climbing aboard, we had a short safety briefing before motoring off from Mousehole’s still harbour waters and into the bay.

We were blessed with perfect sunshine and calm waters, as we headed west towards Lamorna Cove and Boscawen Point. Along the way, Neil told us tales of his childhood growing up on the waters around Mousehole and pointed out different landmarks and caves along the way.

Soon after, the quaint Lamorna Cove came into view with its sheer cliffs and small harbour, part of which was destroyed in the storms during the winter of 2014. Evidence of an old granite quarry can be seen high above the fishermen’s cottages, but even on a glorious summer’s day, the cove was delightfully peaceful.

A small white lighthouse sits on the coastline.

We then headed out of Lamorna cove, hugging the coast, until we reached Tater Du Lighthouse, where Neil regaled us with the wonders of its history. From here we ventured a little further out from the coastline as we motored back towards Mousehole in hopes of spotting some wildlife. Despite dolphins and seals often being spotted in the waters of Mount’s Bay, on this morning they gave the Cormorant a wide berth, though plenty of fish and jellyfish ventured a little closer.

On the way back to Mousehole Harbour, the team thoroughly enjoyed watching the scenery and taking in the views of St Michael’s Mount from the water. After a busy morning of relaxing, listening and taking photos, we headed back into the harbour, passing St Clement’s Isle on the way.

Our team had a delightful morning on the water, and two of our lovely ladies from the bookings team have shared their feedback following the trip:

Kim said, "We picked a perfect day for a boat trip!  The Skipper was proper Cornish and so knowledgeable; who would have thought the coastline could be so interesting. You could ask him anything!!! The tales of him growing up as a boy on the water were captivating".

Jackie, whose husband also joined her, said, "We were so lucky to have been invited on board The Cormorant, Neil is so knowledgeable and had lots of great stories to tell. The stories of when he was a young boy growing up in Mousehole and the history of the harbour. The weather was a huge bonus; we couldn’t have been luckier that day. Highly recommend 😊".

The Skipper points out key things on the coastline from the cabin.
