Aspects Holidays makes hay at Flicka Donkey Sanctuary

Here at Aspects Holidays we are always looking at ways to support our people and our community, with staff being allocated three paid volunteering days a year to take some time away from the office and lend a helping hand. As proud supporters of Flicka Donkey Sanctuary in Cornwall, having donated to their fundraising efforts in previous years, we were delighted when the opportunity arose for several of our team to help out at the sanctuary.

Across four days, staff arrived at the sanctuary raring to go. Following a safety briefing our volunteers were set to work clearing the barns and paddocks, laying fresh hay and feed, and even grooming some of the rescued donkeys. Some of the team even helped decorate their Christmas tree ahead of their Winter Fayre and carol concerts.

Set across 40 acres, Flicka was set up in 1995 and is home to over 100 donkeys and 30 horses and ponies who have been rescued from abuse, neglect or abandonment. Open to the public, you can visit from Wednesday through to Sunday. The sanctuary closes on a Monday and Tuesday, so the animals can have their medical and dental checks.

Marketing Assistant Molly Rusden was one of the volunteers who went along on a rainy Monday “we had such a rewarding day volunteering at Flicka, you can really tell how hard all the staff and regular volunteers work to keep the donkeys well looked after. It was a shame the weather wasn’t on our side, but it was so relaxing seeing the donkeys in their tranquil and cosy barn!”

We were also delighted to be able to take with us £400 worth of feed and supplies, bought from their wish list at Baileys Country Store to give them a much-needed stock up for the winter months. As a charity, the donkey sanctuary relies solely on funding and donations and is grateful for any support. If you’d like to help the donkeys you can see their wish list or donate online.

Entry to the sanctuary is free but donations are welcome, and there is an on-site cafe and gift shop. You can also adopt your very own rescue donkey!
