Golowan | June 2012

Golowan is a 9 day festival steeped in tradition and taking place in Penzance in June. The Cornish word for ‘Midsummer’, the festival celebrates ancient Celtic customs and cumulates to the highlight of the week, Mazey Day.

Originally a one-day celebration, Golowan has expanded into a 9 day arts and music festival and is one of the most renowned in the Cornwall. There will be comedy, drama, salsa, Cornish music, storytelling and film showings. Last year the festival broke the Guinness World Records for the largest number of pirates in one place and this year is taking it one step further and organising their very own ‘Golympix’ with three-legged pirate races and pasty and spoon races!

On Mazey Eve the famous Penglaz the Penzance ‘Obby ‘Oss will lead a procession of dancers and musicians along the Quay. The following day the streets will be lined with processions and performers for the famous Mazey Day. The streets will be decorated to the hilt and there will be an ancient serpent dance weaving their way through the town.
