From the new and improved Hall for Cornwall to the coastal heights of the Minack Theatre, Cornwall certainly has its fair share of epic theatres. But to Wildworks, every place, from run down castles to dramatic cliff tops are a stage, giving a totally unique setting to their catalogue of utterly entertaining plays.

About Wildworks

Established in 2005, Wildworks has been spinning yarns in the most inventive ways for nearly 20 years. During this time, the Cornish theatre company has utilised many of Cornwall’s fascinating locales from the once-forgotten tangles of The Lost Gardens of Heligan to the golden sands of Carlyon Bay near Charlestown. While they’ve performed all over the world, Wildworks’ heart will always remain firmly in Cornwall as they return again and again to bring incredible stories to their home turf.

Each time a new location is chosen, the team at Wildworks set to work uncovering the stories from the land and the people who live there, which inspire and provoke the performances they create. As such, no two stories are ever the same. Having said that, each show shares a deep-rooted passion for storytelling through experimental and often brave techniques that not only push boundaries but jump clear over them! Cornwall is home to some incredible creatives, giving Wildworks many experienced wells from which to draw.

A bizarre mix of media is used in the performances, with previous shows featuring motorbikes, horses, and even fire for an uber memorable showstopper. The often-outdoor setting also means the audience gets to enjoy a more natural backdrop, with day and night often having their own roles in the play. Swapping velvet chairs for sandy bottoms and stars overhead, the raw setting of Wildworks’ performances is an unparalleled way to experience theatre.

Wildworks’ current show

On the stage at the moment is a wonderfully dark yet comic play that (literally) leads its audience on a journey alongside its protagonist. That’s right, I AM KEVIN is a promenade performance, which means you get to follow the characters as they walk along the sandy shoreline of Carlyon Bay in Cornwall and act out each scene in a new and increasingly astonishing backdrop. You might recognise the cleverly used rubble of Cornwall’s former music venue, The Coliseum, which played host to some of the top bands in the 80s from Bon Jovi to The Who – Aminita Francis’ performance as Scylla in I AM KEVIN is just as Rock n’ Roll!

The play itself follows the story of a boy, who after being raised inside a safe, albeit isolated, circle, wakes to find his mother has gone. Follow the boy as he steps out into a world of gods and monsters in search of his mother and marvel at the original music, eye-popping sets, and totally immersive atmosphere.

I AM KEVIN really makes the most of the beachy location, with characters emerging from the stretches of sand, running off into the fading light, and, in some cases, walking alongside you as you make your way down the beach to the next striking and unique installation.

Open to all and with a special BSL/audio described night, I AM KEVIN welcomes everyone to the sands of Carlyon Bay for an experience unlike any other. While you can enjoy the play with the feeling of sand between your toes, you will be following the cast along the beach where shoes are most definitely recommended. The ocean-side location does mean you can indulge in a spot of sea swimming before the performance starts – the ultimate pre-show refreshment!
