Peaceful, excellent location; a lovely 15 minutes walk across a field to the beach… could always wish to be closer but really shouldn’t grumble! Only 5 minute drive to the beach. 10 minutes walk (with care, or 1 minute drive) to Widemouth Manor for great food and a drink in the atmospheric Sunset Bar.
Easy access to the main road to explore other areas. Lovely, friendly host. Always willing to help if needed and never intrusive. Comfortable and clean cottage/barn conversation; had everything we needed as a family of four (two teenagers) that enjoy the surf… outside tap for washing down boards & wetsuits etc. Lovely hot shower. Overall, particularly considering the location, we felt the property was good value for money. Definitely recommend and would love to return.

Holidays in Widemouth Bay

Widemouth Bay is a beautiful beach, just three miles from the town of Bude. With one and a half miles of golden sand, it’s the perfect place for a relaxing holiday within easy reach of the facilities at Bude.

Situated on the North coast, Widemouth Bay is an open, exposed stretch of coast, ideal for surfers. Equally enjoyed by families, children can explore the rock pools exposed at low tide. With beach cafes, parking and seasonal lifeguards, it’s the perfect day out.

Though Widemouth Bay appears to be one large beach, it’s divided into two beaches. Blackrock, the south end, is privately owned and is dog-friendly all year, perfect if your pooch is joining you on holiday.

Did you know...

Widemouth Bay is the landing point for communications cables linking the UK to other countries?

Widemouth Bay Beach

Of course, the best part of Widemouth Bay is Widemouth Bay Beach - 1.5 miles of glorious sand.

Though it appears to be one large expanse of sand, the beach is actually divided into two sections: the North Beach and the South Beach (also known as Black Rock). This division comes in the form of a barrier of natural rocks - the largest being the landmark known as Black Rock. At low tide, hundreds of rock pools are exposed - perfect to keep the children (and adults) entertained.

Ample parking is available at Widemouth Bay, but if you don't fancy getting your toes sandy, you can park at one of the free viewing areas!

There is a seasonal dog ban on this beach from the 15th May to the 30th September between 10am and 6pm. Outside these hours and from 1st October to 14th May dogs are allowed.

Things to do in Widemouth Bay

If you fancy a change from rock-pooling and making sand castles on the beach, you might like to try surfing. Don't worry if you're a beginner you can take surfing lessons with Freewave Surf Academy or OA Surf Club

There are lots of lovely walks in and around Widemouth Bay. You could try walking to Bude, via Philips Point Nature Reserve, over Efford Down, to the watch tower at Compass Point and then follow the canal into Bude.

If you're looking to explore further afield, check out our blog about things to do in Bude.

Places to eat in Widemouth Bay

There are several eateries in and around Widemouth Bay.

Firstly, The Bay View Inn provides a selection of seasonal classics and food with a twist. They have three separate indoor dining areas, several alfresco dining areas and spaces available for private hire. In peak season, they open a snack shack, serving a variety of take away foods.

Close to the beach, you'll find Black Rock Cafe and Bistro, serving freshly-cooked artisan food. You can enjoy your food inside, or on the deck soaking up the views.

With direct access to the beach, Widemouth Bay Cafe serves all day breakfast, fish and chips, burgers, cream teas and other light snacks.

Slightly outside of Widemouth Bay, Elements Cafe Bar and Restaurant serves a selection of food, specialising in pizza and pasta. The restaurant has beautiful views to enjoy while you dine.

Well what an amazing 2 weeks spent at fields barn! The accommodation is lovely and the owners were great, always there if we needed anything and always happy to recommend places to visit, eat etc… Plenty of space for a family of 4 and ample parking. Would definitely recommend this property and would definitely visit again in the future. Another great experience using aspects holidays and looking forward to booking with them for next summer

The Quine’s

Fields Barn is a lovely place to stay and the owners of the property were so welcoming and friendly too. The property is modern and clean and has all the facilities you need, comfortable beds too. Great location for the beach and surrounding villages and towns such as Bude. Bude is a fantastic town and only 5min drive away. The property is in a lovely quiet location surrounded by fields with sheep.

A beautiful setting with very friendly owner and immaculate property. We enjoyed watching the House Martins and seeing the lambs. We hope to come again.

Excellent property, very quiet in a beautiful location. Hosts were excellent and very informative of the area. Lovely walk to the beach, slight slope on return. Bar/ restaurant 10 minutes walk. 9 out of 10

We had a fantastic week at Fields Barn. The location of the property is perfect for a quick drive to Widemouth Bay and just a 10 minute drive to Bude. The cottage was a great size for a family of 4 plus a dog. There is a great pub just up the road (Widemouth Manor) which has a lovely play area for kids, nice food and stunning views. We also drove 25 minutes south to St Nectans Glen which has a lovely walk to a beautiful waterfall.

We didn't find it was possible to walk to the beach with having to walk on busy roads with no path but this didn't bother us because the drive was so short. The closest beach is dog friendly all year and we found it easy to park if you arrive in the morning, the car parks get busy/full later in the day on bank holidays/weekends. There is also free parking a little further up the coast which we used once and there is a beautiful coastal walk.

I would definitely recommend this property, but a few small disappointing things: the BBQ was small and old and I would have expected better when it is meant to be shared by 3 cottages. We couldn't get it to light so the owners kindly gave us matches but even with a small breeze it was impossible to light so we didn't end up using it. There was a washing machine but no dryer or washing line. A clothes horse was provided but it kept blowing over in the wind. The BBQ area is communal but there is meant to be a space outside the cottage which is private. It didn't feel very private as guests from other cottages and the owners frequently walked past. The other cottages had a courtyard which was much more private. I'd recommend doing a food delivery for when you arrive. Tea, coffee, washing tablets, milk, wine and were provided which was lovely, but nothing else so be sure to order or bring anything else you need.

It certainly sounds like you had a great time here. It's a great place for exploring this lovely part of Cornwall. We were sorry to hear that a few things were not quite what you expected though. We try to ensure that we are open and honest with the descriptions and try our best to highlight that it is part of a group of cottages and do not advertise a tumble drier on the website description. Washing lines are not a standard item, but there should always be a clothes horse available, which it sounds like you found. We appreciate that you may not want it taking up space inside, but if it is particularly windy, that may be the only solution unfortunately. We understand that the owners purchased a new BBQ while you were here, which was used during the week, so we hope that you got on better with that one. Thanks for your feedback and we hope to see you back in Cornwall again soon. Tanya, Customer Services

Very attractive roomy barn conversion in scenic position. Very convenient for visiting the coast of North Cornwall. Rooms very comfortable and clean. Loved the walk in shower. The owners were very friendly and helpful . We had a very enjoyable holiday.

We have had a wonderful week at Fields Barn and would recommend. The owners were lovely too and very helpful. Very enjoyable stay and will definitely go again.

A well presented and welcoming stay, owners were very helpful too! Location was great as it was just outside of bude and local beach was beautiful! After a long drive the milk and wine was a nice touch when arriving

We had a great holiday in Fields Barn, location is perfect for Black Rock beach and only 15 min drive to supermarkets in Bude. The cottage was clean and spacious and we were made to feel very welcome from the minute we arrived. I think we’ll be back in the future

Field barn is a great place to stay, well equipped & in a lovely rural spot but not too far from the beach, nearest pub or bus stop. The owners were so helpful and friendly which all helped to ensure a great holiday.

Have just returned from a super week in Widemouth Bay. I can highly recommend this cottage. The position is ideal for visiting various attractions both locally and further afield. The local beach is a short drive away and easy to access. Tip for parking ---- if you drive further along the main road you can park your car for free.

We had a very relaxing break at Fields Barn, which is a large, well appointed and comfortable barn conversation. The owners live close by and were extremely helpful throughout. Iain was so kind when I became ill during the second week. A lovely property and great value for money overall.

This property is spacious and easily enough room for four people. There is a second lounge on the mezzanine level if anybody wants some peace and quiet! It has everything you need for a relaxing holiday. The beach is a 30 minute walk away and the nearest pub/restaurant 15 minutes. I would have no hesitation in recommending this property.

Fields barn was absolutely beautiful. We can't fault the location or property. An extremely clean home away from home with some lovely little touches like the wine on arrival and hand sanitisers. The secure paddock was a welcome bonus to for our dog to run free. Also the biscuits for our dog was a lovely touch. We loved our stay and hope to return in the not too distant future. Thank you

Wonderful location, good for touring. Lovely property with all our expectations exceeded. Great for privacy and parking. Welcome pack was nice gesture especially after lengthy journey. Would definitely recommend. Thank you for making our break away so perfect.

We come to widemouth bay every year but it was first time staying here. It was very peaceful but close enough to the beach and restaurant. We would definitely recommend this to friends and family

This is a terrific place to stay in a great location, you can walk to the beach and there’s a nice place to drink and eat 5 minutes away. The cottage is spacious and comfortable, our only issue was with the WiFi which was very unreliable, guaranteeing moaning from game obsessed son for the time we were in.

We are very sorry the wifi had not been very reliable during your stay. The location of this property is amazing and a fantastic feature, but the downside of such a location can be the strength of the wifi. The owner is looking into possible solutions to prevent this from being an on-going problem for guests. We are glad that you otherwise enjoyed the property and sorry again for this issue. Fields Barn is an amazing place to stay. Out of the way of the crowds but a short 2 min drive to the nearest beach and 10 mins to Bude. Immaculately Clean, comfortable, everything you need and wonderful hosts. Would highly recommend Aspect holidays and Fields Barn in particular.

Cannot fault the property and the owners were really friendly and helpful. Loved the welcome gift of hand sanitiser! The property was absolutely immaculate - so clean. Excellent parking and facilities. Beautiful accommodation, fresh, spacious and well equipped. Great location, quiet and just a short drive to the beach. Would recommend without hesitation.
