Rising Embers: a woodfired sauna experience in Penzance

Woodfired sauna in Penzance

On a sunny Friday morning in July, we were delighted to start the day with an invitation to experience a magical morning session with Rising Embers Sauna, in the beautiful seaside town of Penzance. Established at the start of 2023, owner Jenny, who is passionate about the benefits of regular sauna use, has created a sanctuary in Penzance, fulfilling her vision to warm the hearts of wild swimmers.

Nestled amid palm trees and violet agapanthus, the Finnish-inspired wood-fired mobile sauna is currently tucked away in St Anthony Gardens, opposite the Jubilee Pool. We were greeted by Jenny in this beautiful spot, and introduced to the benefits of sauna use, as well as the all-important safety elements. Our session was an hour long, so we left our belongings safely with Jenny and headed across the promenade for an invigorating cold-water dip in the sea, just off Battery Rocks, a popular spot with sea swimmers for decades.

With our body temperatures cooled, we strolled back to the Rising Embers’ haven, excited to embrace the benefits of the sauna. Setting the timer to fifteen minutes, we stepped inside and immediately felt the welcoming heat surround us. We sat back and sighed, relaxing as we soaked up the views of St Michael’s Mount, letting the heat warm our bodies and minds. Beautifully scented essential oils are supplied to add to the coals, we loved this and felt it added to the whole experiences, enlivening our senses.

As the fifteen minutes came to an end, Jenny advised we step back outside to cool off, with the option of having a bucket of cold water thrown over us (with plans to include a cold plunge barrel in the future!). We all chose to go ahead with this, making the most of the extreme temperature transitions, something that has been practised in Finland for centuries, as part of their traditional hot and cold therapy. Jenny supplies water to drink, so after a refreshing glass or two, we headed back into the bliss of the sauna. Some of us chose to apply the complementary almond oil to our hair as well; what a treat!

We felt truly relaxed after our second session in the sauna and took a moment to cool in the deck chairs with a glass of water before getting ready to go. Feeling refreshed, reenergised, and reinvigorated, we couldn’t think of a better way to start a Friday.
