A short walk from our Perranporth office, Stoked Surf School are conveniently located just off the high street, next to the beach and car park. Offering lessons for all abilities, Julian and his team of fully qualified instructors have been teaching for over 25 years.  

We were greeted with a very warm welcome, and soon had our wetsuits on ready to hit the waves.  The surf school is well-equipped with high-quality boards, individual changing rooms, an outdoor shower, surf shop and a coffee spot... perfect for refuelling post-lesson! With plenty of space, we got changed, stored our bags and met up with our fellow learners who were also on the beginner lesson with us.  

The lesson started with an introduction from Julian, who went through the plan for the morning and explained their unique Loop system, which measures your surfing ability, allowing instructors to tailor each lesson to you and help you get the most out of the waves. From beginner to more advanced, the system highlights skills required for surfing – from standing as a learner to mastering turns for the more advanced surfer.  

Once the introductions were over, we headed down to the beach, where our boards were waiting for us. Before we hit the water, we went through the basics on the sand, along with important safety tips and everything we needed to know to feel safe and comfortable. After a short while, we were all ready to hit the surf! 

We had a lot of fun paddling out, practising everything we’d been taught, with many of us standing! We then came back to shore, where we were given more tips to help improve performance. After Julian and his team had seen our abilities, this was a great opportunity to get us ready for more wave riding. 

We headed back into the water where Julian and Fraser spent time with everyone individually, guiding us all to stand up… including Peter, who, at age 82, was visiting with his family and wanted to give surfing a go! We were all delighted to watch him ride a wave back into shore! 

Time flew by, and before we knew it, it was the end of the lesson! We headed back to the surf school, where we rinsed off and got changed, all feeling very proud of ourselves after a fun morning in the waves and already talking about when we could get back out there!

Julian and the team were friendly, welcoming and put us all at ease from the start. Their passion for surfing was infectious and made it so much for all of us! Julian and Frazer were really engaged throughout, making sure everyone had time with an instructor, checking in, offering help and cheering everyone on – whatever their ability!
