As the first to join the newly established Corporate Membership scheme for Cornwall Museum and Art Gallery, we were delighted to be invited along to the launch of their latest exhibition, Myths and Legends.

The museum, situated in the heart of Cornwall’s only city, Truro, has undergone a significant transformation in recent years, with major refurbishments undertaken to guarantee the future of the museum for all.
We were warmly welcomed to the museum and, after a wander around the ground floor, we joined the other guests and gathered to listen to an introduction on the new exhibition by the lead artist, Sue Hill. She spoke with such passion about Cornwall and the unique connection between the Cornish landscape and spirituality, which for centuries has tied Cornwall with myth, legend and folklore. She spoke of ‘genius loci’, meaning ‘the spirit of the place’, regarding the Cornish landscape and its special place in the hearts of so many.

On the first floor, accessed via the impressive stairwell and gallery, the Myths and Legends exhibition does not disappoint as you’re invited to step into an otherworldly place of mermaids, fairies, giants and more.
The carefully curated collection contains a varied selection of beautifully presented information, artwork, artefacts, interactive opportunities, and perhaps the most unexpected, imposing yet spectacular sculptures. We particularly enjoyed the opportunity to get involved at the dressing-up station and the potion-making corner!

This new exhibition highlights the significance of folklore in Cornwall and how stories from the past have evolved and helped shape the Cornwall we know and love today. We highly recommend visiting the museum and taking the opportunity to view the current exhibition while it’s on display. There’s so much to see and do for all ages, we’re sure the whole family will love it.
