If you are looking for a tranquil break in the country, then The Garden Barn with its shepherd's hut, hidden at the end of a long unmade lane in the quiet village of St Hilary, is perfect, offering a peaceful escape for up to four people amidst a flower-filled garden. With two cosy bedrooms; choose either the king size bed in the main property or snuggle down in the double bed of the charming shepherd's hut. As the sun rises over the trees, take a quiet moment over a steaming cup of coffee to breathe in the fresh Cornish air. If you don't want to venture far, take a good book, a glass of something chilled, and sprawl out on a blanket and while away afternoons on the lawn, with the birds chirping in the treetops, with no agenda other than relaxation.

The interior is flooded with natural light through the patio doors, combined with the gentle sounds of the woodland outside, creating a relaxing retreat which will soothe the busy mind. There is a spacious bathroom in the barn with an invigorating rainfall shower to start your day, or finish your day with a luxurious bubble bath. After an al fresco breakfast of hot croissants stuffed with local butter, pack up a picnic and head to one of the beautiful, local beaches. When the heat of the day begins to fade there is nothing like a few hours of peace and seclusion to nurture your creativity. The shepherd's hut is a peaceful sanctuary where you can just enjoy its surroundings, which are guaranteed to ignite the imagination, whether it's to write, paint or just lose yourself in your own thoughts and memories of a perfect Cornish holiday.

Holidays in West Cornwall

There is almost an embarrassment of riches for the visitor to choose from when looking at holiday cottages in West Cornwall. With its extraordinary variety of landscapes and coastline, as well as its proud history and cultural heritage, you won't be disappointed.

With many superb beaches to enjoy, including five with the coveted Blue Flag status, it is easy to see why so many people associate this part of the world with sun, sea, sand and, of course, surf. There is, however, so much more on offer when contemplating self catering holidays in West Cornwall.

West Cornwall is home to popular destinations such as MarazionPenzanceCarbis Bay and St Ives, which are all worth a visit. From the iconic St Michael's Mount to the breath taking Minack Theatre as featured in our blog, you wont be short of things to do while self catering in West Cornwall.

Things to do in West Cornwall

Days out

With such an abundance of stunning sights in West Cornwall, you'll be spoilt for choice when choosing where to visit while holidaying here. St Michael's Mount, The Minack Theatre, and St Ives harbour are just a few of the enthralling places on offer. The many golden sandy beaches that West Cornwall boasts are perfect for topping up the tan. For something a little more energetic, boat trips, fishing excursions and water sports are available. Museums and art galleries provide an equally enjoyable day out, with world famous exhibitions at the Tate St Ives and the Barbara Hepworth museum within easy reach.

With the bustling coastal towns of St Ives, Mousehole and Marazion within close proximity of one another, you can be sure to find somewhere to provide everything you need to the perfect family day out.

Walking

Cornwall's spectacular scenery provides the perfect backdrop for exploring. The coastal paths which hug the rugged cliffs offer breath taking sea views, while walking inland you can enjoy the many nature reserves, ancient stone circles and woodland, for which Cornwall is renowned.

Art & heritage

Famous for its quality of light, the area has long been a haven for artists and there are many galleries to be found wherever you go. There are also many gardens to enjoy; the mild climate will often let plants flourish here which you won’t find anywhere else in the country. For those wanting to dig a little deeper, there is also an amazing mining and maritime heritage which has done much to shape the county and its people as well as, it could be argued, the rest of the world.

What our guests say...

We know how important honest reviews are when it comes to booking your holiday. To help you choose the right property for you, we publish all reviews left by guests who have stayed here in the past, with the few exceptions stated in our Review Guidelines. Please bear in mind that some facilities referred to by past guests in reviews can be removed or changed at any time.

Excellent stay, lovely location.

The Garden Barn was lovely bright and clean and spacious.

However the off road potholed narrow unmade tracks are not suitable for a standard saloon car our car grounded on two or three occasions both coming in and going out along the unmade tracks.

Try to avoid arriving in the dark as the one sign that is provided can not be picked up by car head lights as it is too high in the air.

Reply from Aspects Holidays

We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed your time at The Garden Barn. Tucked away in the quiet village of St Hilary, the property is located at the end of a long, narrow, unmade lane, which we do warn may not be suitable for lower cars. However, we do hope you agree the peace and tranquility is well worth the journey! We try to make our directions as clear as possible for all arriving guests, so will be sure to take into consideration your thoughts about arriving in the dark to see if there is anything we can improve in these written instructions. Katy, Customer Services.

Again a excellent stay in the peaceful setting of the Garden Barn. Excellent facilities and comfort for a enjoyable Cornwall holiday.

As all the reviews mentioned, "the bumpy lane" I suggest, visit the village store, buy a pint of milk and you will have a lovely milk shake when you arrive at the barn. The lane was not a problem for us. The barn was lovely, light & airy, stylish, clean, comfortable bed, peaceful, very well appointed, for all the places we planned to visit. Could not fault it. You have two happy clients.

if Anyone requires quietness look no further whether your family or friends I'm saying no more because if i do Everyone will want to go lol ????

The Garden Barn was beyond our expectations. A truly wonderful cottage with a magnificent garden and everything you could need. The shepherd hut was just beautiful and as a family we loved the whole week! The cottage was in a great location for exploring Cornwall.

Lovely property. Clean and comfortable. It has everything you could need during your stay. We enjoyed our stay very much, it's so peaceful. The access lane is very bumpy but it didn't spoil our visit. Will probably book again.

We are so pleased you had a lovely stay at The Garden Barn, this is great to hear. We can appreciate that some may find the narrow lane to be quite bumpy, so we try to make this as clear as possible in the property description. We hope you agree that the peace and tranquility of The Garden Barn is well worth the journey! Katy, Customer Services.

Our link to The Garden Barn was via the brother of the owner, but how pleased we were not only to review the details but also be introduced to Aspect Holidays. It prompted a last-minute decision to book - a decision that paid dividends. The accommodation was perfect for us both - well appointed, stylish, warm, welcoming and super clean. The location is quiet so perfect for a relaxing break. Although October, the weather was mostly kind with above average temperatures which meant we could also make use of the large patio area. The Barn is conveniently placed for West Cornwall and the more familiar we became with the surroundings, the shorter the distances seemed. We really had a super break and highly recommend The Garden Barn to anyone looking for a stress-free period of rest and relaxation. Other reviews refer to the farm track access but, driven with care, it's fine and simply added to the character of what was a perfect holiday. We were sad to leave.

Mr Cook. October 2023

love this place we will be back

We received the warmest welcome ever in a holiday home. A beautiful house in a quiet surrounding. And the perfect starting point to explore West Cornwall.

The warning about the lane leading to the house should be taken serious though. We just managed to get there in our BMW 3 series with the car bottoming out every now and then. If you consider getting there in your sports car - just forget about it. Not complaining, we got plenty of warnings - just saying.

We are so pleased to hear you received a warm welcome at The Garden Barn and we must agree, it is a beautiful property! In these sorts of areas in Cornwall it is quite typical to find properties with narrow access lanes, which may not suit lower cars, so we try to warn of this in the website description as best we can. We hope you agree that navigating the lane is worth it once you enter this lovely property and enjoy its tranquil location. Thanks again for your comments and we hope you had a lovely stay. Second year staying at the Garden Barn and again the property was up to the usual high standard. Well equipped for home cooking furnishings and bed very comfortable. Well tended spacious garden is very nice with a range of garden furniture including barbecue. Ideal base to visit West Cornwall and further afield. Best Cornwall property we have stayed in considering booking for third year.

ah this one is what i myself thought if i put down my honest opinion ? Everyone will want to go ?? so it's a secret in other words look book & Go but as i have said its a secret

Had a brilliant week at The Garden Barn...One of the best properties I've stayed in Self Catering wise...An absolutely beautiful place and outdoor space....You will not be disappointed !!!...Everything is to a high standard and the only issue maybe the access road in and out to some...It wasn't to ourselves...Fully recommend this property and Aspects Holidays..Thank You for a wonderful, value for money stay :-)

From the moment we turned into the lane towards The Garden Barn it felt like we were entering a magical place. Driving in first gear we had no problems with the track, our Mazda coped with the potholes and we actually enjoyed slowing down and taking in our surroundings; wildflowers and birds everywhere. Then arriving at the beautifully converted cottage, tastefully furnished with all we needed for a relaxing stay. Lovely choice of garden furniture to lounge in catching the last rays of the sun or watching for bats, owls, foxes and stars as it got dark. We would definitely recommend a stay here.

This was the best holiday cottage we have ever booked for it's tranquillity and peaceful location. Close to Penzance for shopping and West Penwith for the fantastic coastal path. The access lane is VERY bumpy.

Our third stay at the Garden Barn .

We love the peaceful location . Light airy property tastefully furnished with a well equipped kitchen. The enclosed garden is a delight . Easy access to fabulous beaches . We love Marazion , Porthcurno and Gwithian .

Aspects Team as always helpful and professional . Thank you Team and Owners for another fabulous stay .

If you are looking for an ideal place away from other busier locations then this is it. We stayed 3 nights and throughly enjoyed our stay. Excellent location for exploring the area. Quiet and relaxing, and very affordable in comparison to some areas. Having read previous reviews we knew about the bumpy approach to the property but we simply giggled the whole way, and made part of the experience.

Wonderful hidden secret in a beautiful setting. Very comfy, clean and well equipped. We would definelty recommend the Garden Barn and hope to come back one day.

Garden Barn is excellent location well equipped and very comfortable with nice garden to relax in. Just short walk into the village for local pubs and shop. Would recommend this property for a stay in West Cornwall.

We loved the Garden Barn the place is fully equipped to a very high standard fantastic outside place to chill having a relaxing meal and drinks. Lovely and clean and a great shower and comfortable bed. Great to have a choice of TV to watch. Could not fault the Garden Barn Thank you for the welcome pack and beautiful flowers Also great to have a washing machine and drier. The only draw back was going down the lanes to the Barn very bumpy with pot holes not good for a low car we were luck with our car Really happy with the service with Aspects Holidays have used them for a few holidays always happy with our holidays

Lovely cottage & very clean, Long driveway access was very tight & bumpy, 4x4 needed in my opinion (good job I have a 4x4 Range Rover)

Reply from Aspects Holidays

Thanks for your feedback. We are glad that you enjoyed this lovely property. We try to make the nature of the lane as clear as possible within the website description, so that guests can make an informed choice about whether the access will be suitable for their vehicle. Many team members have taken their own vehicles to the property when they have visited, which are not 4x4s, but we are very used to driving along such lanes, and we appreciate that some guests may not feel comfortable taking their vehicles down it, unless in a 4x4. The lane can also be worse if we have had a period of bad weather in the lead up to a visit, so it is all worth considering when booking and deciding on how you are travelling. Please feel free to speak with the team before booking if you would like more information. Tanya, Customer Services

Such a lovely place, so well looked after and very clean

Beautiful setting in a quiet area. Lots of bird song and peace and quiet. Beautiful accommodation with everything provided - even a Bluetooth speaker. Prepare for the drive to the property, though - VERY bumpy, rough and uneven long road.

A beatyful place to go very peaceful and very well equipped we would highly recommend The garden barn you won't be disappointed

It was beautiful. Spacious, light, tastefully decorated and very good kitchen equipment. The bookshelf was terrific: I read four books from it whilst I was there. Very friendly and helpful owners. The Shepherds Hut is beautiful. My stay was in a cold and rainy March, so didn't use the outside space, but it's beautifully equipped and landscaped: barbecue area, lots of tables and seating and a lovely flat large lawn for games. I liked it so much I extended my stay by an extra two days. I booked it at short notice to have some space, peace and quiet to work on my art commissions, and it was lovely. I'd definitely book again.

The Garden Barn was an amazing place to stay, it completely exceeded our expectations. The location was perfect as we visiting friends in nearby Goldsithney. We will definitely visit again

Would highly recomend staying here cottage and surroundings really lovely

Excellent property but beware of the very narrow and rutted access

We loved the rural location, peaceful and really nicely tucked away but yet perfect distance from North & South coasts. Everything we needed was at the property and with two young children the lawn was perfect for badminton and boules. Would love to stay again.

A lovely peaceful property that is exactly as described. Very peaceful and in lovely countryside but be aware of the narrow bumpy approach lanes - definitely not suitable for a low car. Great location for visiting various sites by car nearby. Weather permitting the nearby village has 2 public houses both worth a visit for food after a 20 minute walk.

Fantastic cottage very high standard of fixtures and fittings very good location the lane is a bit rough but not a major problem

Had a week in the Garden Barn and the property is a credit to the owners

Wonderful place to stay top quality fixtures and fitting everything you would ever need was provided for. Very quiet and peaceful relaxing holiday the outside space is superb with lovely seating areas to sit and eat and relax. The only downside is the lane is very narrow and bumpy and nowhere within walking distance to get newspapers etc. If you are looking for a very quiet place to stay go here you won’t be disappointed.

We were very impressed with this comfortable and spacious property, in particular the attention to detail. The fixtures and fittings were well above average. The heating and hot water were provided by a gound source heat pump which was excellent. The information provided for white goods etc was comprehensive and the local area information folder was outstanding. Outside, the extensive patio, BBQ facilities, and garden furniture were superb together with a large lawned area and plenty of parking space. The whole place was completely private and not overlooked. The property was very well situated for walkers like us to explore the coastal paths and visit the many beautiful beaches. N.B. Leave the sports car at home as the approach road is a 5 minute,1mph rodeo ride. Don't let this put you off!

If you’re thinking of a little getaway this cottage is perfect! Has everything you need inside and it’s decorated beautifully! The Shepard’s hut is adorable, it was so cosy and warm even through a stormy night. We loved it so much we booked a second stay on our first night. Would definitely recommend!

Beautiful well equipped barn conversion inside and out. Probably the one of thenicest place we have stayed. Shame about the access lanes very rough and very bumpy.

Lovely secluded barn with modern furnishings and a lovely garden area. Super quick WiFi provided. Important to note that this property is very much secluded on a long unmade road which is extremely bumpy and can get very wet at times. If your car is low to the ground then take extreme caution.
