Newlyn Harbour

Experience the buzz of a thriving, hardworking harbour and taste the freshest fish on offer in Cornwall. The harbour is overlooked by white washed and granite Cornish fisherman’s cottages interwoven by narrow lanes and cobbled alleys often too steep or narrow for a car so all you will find is the odd cat basking in the sunshine. Enjoy the buzz of Newlyn’s working harbour, visit Newlyn Art Gallery or the wonderful established gardens with breath-taking views across to the iconic Penzance Jubilee Pool.

Newlyn Art Community

The Newlyn School is a group of artists who came to live and work in Newlyn or the surrounding area between the 1880s and the early twentieth century. They painted en plein air (in the open air). Perhaps best known are: Stanhope Forbes, Elizabeth Forbes, Walter Langley, Harold Knight, Laura Knight, Harold Harvey. There is much documentation about the school at Penlee House.

The collection is kept at Penlee House rather than the Newlyn Gallery because Newlyn Gallery maintains a tradition of showing modern art.

Newlyn Gallery & Exchange Gallery in Penzance Town Centre host the best of conceptual and modern art. Together with St. Ives Tate and Penlee House the four galleries host major national and international exhibitions, as well as showing the work of the Newlyn School of Art, who offer a wide range of high quality art courses run by some of the most exciting artists in the region. Read more about art classes at Newlyn school of art on our blog. Thus the area which has inspired so many artists celebrates its artistic heritage while maintaining strong links with the art world of today.

Things to do near Newlyn

While self catering in Newlyn, why not leave the car behind and take the gorgeous mile-long walk along the promenade to the famous harbour town of Penzance. With the backdrop of Mounts Bay, St Michael’s Mount glistens in the distance, with the Isles of Scilly just a short boat trip away. To indulge your inner shopperholic you'll find a whole host of shops in the town centre.  Our tip would be to pay a visit to the famous Chapel Street  for some great independent shops - and then relax in one of the town’s many cafes and bars.

Trereife Manor House & Gardens

Located on the outskirts of Newlyn, Trereife Estate offers a great day out, with a centuries old manor set amongst beautiful gardens. Stop off at the Stableyard Cafe for a quick bite or cup of coffee after a day at the beach, or enjoy the stunning surroundings at your own pace. Well worth a visit on a sunny day.

Tom Bawcock's Eve, Mousehole

The tradition of Tom Bawcock comes from the feast or famine lifestyle of Cornwall.  The story goes that it was just before Christmas; there had been no fish for weeks, the boats couldn’t get out into the raging storm, the village was starving. One man, Tom Bawcock, dared to take his boat out of the harbour’s safety. He returned with enough fish to make fish pie for the whole village.

Today, a festival takes place each year to celebrate Tom Bawcock's bravery. During the festival, Star Gazey pies are eaten in memory of this famous event.

A lovely family home. Ideally situated for days out.

We loved every minute of being at Kenilworth. It was an alternative to the big celebrations we had planned for our Golden Wedding. It did not disappoint. The furnishings & comfort are amazing. Newlyn also has everything you could need. The fish & chip shop on the corner is brilliant too. Would recommend this holiday property to anyone wanting high class accommodation

Beautiful house in a great location - very central. The house has a lovely feel with large rooms, comfy beds, a super roll top bath and is well-equipped. The road can be a bit noisy but would definitely stay here again.

Situated right in the centre of the pretty village of Newlyn, Kenilworth is a beautiful house which owners Daniel and Katie have refurbished with love and care. The attention to detail is second to none - down to the thoughtful welcome package, including treats for the dog!
A 30 second walk takes you right in to the heart of the village, with the fabulous seafood bar Mackerel Sky, the great fish and chip shop, plus deli, coffee shops and greengrocer. It really has everything you need. I can't recommend Kenilworth highly enough - we'll definitely be back. Thank you!

Overall a lovely property full of character which is finished to a high and stylish standard. Newlyn is a lovely town and Kenilworth is close to all amenities that Newlyn has to offer. Ideal location for a base to discover this part of Cornwall and surrounding areas.

If you are a light sleeper think twice about booking this property as it is located on a busy road. The noise from nighttime and early morning traffic is loud and as the bedrooms are single glazed could disturb your slumber!

Reply from Aspects Holidays

We are glad to hear that you enjoyed this lovely property. Kenilworth is located on one of the main roads in Newlyn which can be busy at times, though not usually too noisy at night, however it may be more noticeable at busier times of the year, so it is certainly something that may not suit everyone. We try to make this as clear as possible on the website description, so we hope that it was what you had expected and that you found the high standard of the property and fantastic, convenient location for access to some of the most beautiful parts of West Cornwall, made it worthwhile. Tanya, Customer Services

Great location, beautiful house, loved the kitchen, beds very comfy, radios a thoughtful addition in each bedroom, shower room is great and to keep the outside toilet was a fab idea, a really good selection of books and games which kept us entertained in the evening - great information for local dog friendly beaches - thank you for a lovey stay, we would love to come back and would highly recommend this property

Fish and chips two doors down great after a busy day at the beach.

Loved Kenilworth's position, right in village and near beach and paths for walking and cycling along coast to penzance and mousehole.

Attention to detail in design and decor made Kenilworth a treat to stay in and had everything we could possibly need for our stay. Fresh flowers and local produce welcomed us and a treat for our dog too.

We had the best time in Kenilworth. I’m brief the cottage has absolutely everything you need. Was great to be able to pop our wet coats in the tumble drier. The village of Newlyn was brilliant, very friendly locals everywhere we went. Handy fish and chip shop a 5 second walk away-very nice, pubs, baker, butchers, co-op all within 3 minute walk. Can highly recommend the bridge Italian restaurant and the wine bar. Everywhere was dog friendly even the Italian restaurant which was great for us. Nice easy walk to Mousehole in one direction and a longer walk through Penzance along to St Michaels Mt. We had eveything we needed at Kenilworth inside and out and would definitely return.

This is the first time we have used Aspects and I will be definitely using them again. The service is impeccable. The house itself was stunning and well equipped. The ease of booking superb and the staff even delivered a goody bag to my son after he had an accident while we we were staying at house - what a thoughtful gesture. Thank you! xx

This house is an architectural dream. Beautifully renovated. Full of character!! Right in the heart of newlyn. Beautiful beautiful Cornwall

I stayed at Kenilworth at the end of August with my two teenage children. The house is situated in an excellent location for sampling all the delights of Newlyn and for travelling around the Lizard Peninsula. This three bedroomed property is large and spacious providing peace and tranquility and a number of spaces in which to come together as a family. The beautifully proportioned rooms which are wonderfully uncluttered and tastefully furnished (no coastal cliches here) enhance this feeling of space and harmony. Add to that a well equipped kitchen, thoughtful touches everywhere, comfortable beds with quality linens and a good shower and you have to ask why can’t all holidays rentals be like this? We had a wonderful holiday and cannot wait to return.
