Tom Bawcock's Eve, Mousehole

The tradition of Tom Bawcock comes from the feast or famine lifestyle of Cornwall.  The story goes that it was just before Christmas; there had been no fish for weeks, the boats couldn’t get out into the raging storm, the village was starving. One man, Tom Bawcock, dared to take his boat out of the harbour’s safety. He returned with enough fish to make fish pie for the whole village.

Today, a festival takes place each year to celebrate Tom Bawcock's bravery. During the festival, Star Gazey pies are eaten in memory of this famous event.

Off the Hook is the most beautiful little cottage. We absolutely love it here hence returning after our visit last year! It's in a great location with walking distance to the local pub, the stunning Porthkidney beach and Lelant train station. The cottage itself is cosy, warm, clean and comfortable and just absolutely gorgeous. The interior is traditional yet modern and there are thoughtful touches of tea, coffee, milk and biscuits to greet us. Note that the parking really is tight and a bit difficult to get into but the cottage is so worth it! We are devastated that we wont be able to stay here again as unfortunately only 1 dog is accepted and we will now have 2 but I cannot recommend this cottage or Aspects enough. Thank you for a wonderful holiday after a tough year

It is so lovely to hear how much you love it here and such a shame that you that you may not be able to return. The restriction on 1 dog is due to the property size and therefore suitability for an extra dog in there, however, we would be happy to have a chat with the property owners, just in case there is any flexibility with this, and see if there is any possibility of you being able to return to somewhere that you clearly love. Beautiful cottage, excellent location, tight parking space off a vey just main road which is stayed in the description, this didn’t bother us at all and we could carefully get into the space without any issues and we have a large car. If you like to relax in your accommodation in the evening, the lounge is a little uncomfortable the sofa is small and I would say only suitable if you spend little time in the cottage and there is next to no natural light in the lounge. Other than that the cottage is beautifully decorated And we’ll set our with a good size bathroom kitchen and bedroom and plenty of storage space for clothes.

Thank you for your comments; we are glad to hear that you liked the cottage and its fantastic location, but very sorry to hear that you found the lounge a little uncomfortable. It can be very difficult with things like mattresses and sofas, to find something that will suit everyone's taste, everyone being different; and it is disappointing to hear that the sofa comfort and size were not to your preference. Your feedback is automatically sent to owners, so that they can see guest suggestions, and we will also monitor comments to keep an eye on guest's preferences over the coming months. We are glad to hear that 'Off The Hook' had otherwise provided you with everything needed for a comfortable stay and we hope that it would be somewhere that you would love to return to if you are ever looking to visit Cornwall again. Thanks again for the feedback. Tanya, Customer Services

Off the Hook is a well-presented and comfortable property. The decor has a lovely modern-rustic feel, and it's clear that a lot of care and thought have gone into the well-equipped interior. A cosy holiday cottage in an excellent location, close to several beaches and a short bus or train ride into St Ives. We really enjoyed our stay.

The booking information warns that the parking space is tight, so beware! I struggled in my small car and needed my partner outside directing me due to the close proximity of other cars who also have designated parking at the site.

Inside, there was a smell of damp - even though we were there in warm dry weather - which was mentioned in the information pack at the cottage as being due to the sea air. We sprayed plenty of air freshener round as well as opening the windows when we were home, but some people may find this a little off putting.

Reply from Aspects Holidays

It certainly sounds like you had a great time here! Thank you for letting us know about the damp smell during your stay. Whilst many properties in this area can be susceptible to damp, due to the nature of the materials commonly used in buildings here, being so close to the sea, and the slightly warmer, more humid conditions here in Cornwall; this isn't something that we have ever had reported at Off The Hook before. We will monitor further feedback for now as something like this can just be a one off or vary greatly from week to week. Thank you again. Tanya, Customer Services.

Very clean, comfortable and well equipped accommodation. Good location for getting to the beach and into St Ives.

An absolute compact little gem for a short break. Decorated and equipped to a high standard and scrupulously clean. Ideally placed for public transport into St Ives to avoid parking headache. Excellent dog walks and dog friendly beach nearby! Tried to re-book already...no surprise it gets full so quickly! We loved it.

My friend and I had a lovely stay at Off The Hook which is a really comfortable and cosy cottage. There was quick and easy access to st ives due to the train station being down the road. The only problem is the parking which is so tight, I have a really small car and I struggled getting in and out and it does mean reversing out onto the main road. Other than that I really lovely place for a short break.

Lovely Cottage, good location, 2 good pubs nearby, sun in the garden all day, added bonus of car parking

The property was absolutely beautiful. A gorgeous little house with everything we needed and close to the beach. We loved it and so did the dog. The house was lovely and clean and comfortable and in a great location. The parking is very tight and the road can be a bit noisy but we had a great stay and will definitely be back.

Beautiful cottage. Ideal for couples plus dog. No need to drive with station 5 minutes away...

Cute, cosy and comfortable. A well equipped and beautifully decorated cottage for a couples breakaway. Beautiful beach (Porthkidney) is only a 10 minute walk away!

Fantastic cottage, finished to a very high standard. Extremely clean and comfortable. Would thoroughly recommend.

Great little cottage in a lovely village . 2 good pubs and a dog friendly beach within walking distance . The cottage is on quite a busy road but 2 minutes walk and you can be on the coastal path to St Ives. We had a great stay and the cottage was spotlessly clean and well equipped.

Beautiful cosy cottage, spotlessly clean with modern furnishings. Ideal for a couple with dog. Close to coastal railway station and dog friendly beach.
