October 2021

We have absolutely loved staying at Rose Cottage. Everything that we could possibly hope for is here from the most amazing garden with views that you can’t stop looking at to the cosiest wood burner and most comfortable beds. The cottage is very well equipped and we really appreciated the thought that had gone into making it such a home from home. The information provided on the local area was really useful and helped us get our bearings quickly. Portloe is also a great base, beautiful, quiet and with fabulous walking on the doorstep and wonderful local gems like the Hidden Hut and Curgurrel farm shop.

Holidays in Portloe

Situated on the Roseland Peninsula, Portloe is a small and sheltered fishing cove, much unchanged over the years. Once a thriving fishing village, fisherman today still land lobsters and crabs at the harbour.

Due to its steep cliffs and valley-like cove, this concealed village has a fascinating history of smuggling in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Enjoy lunch or dinner at the local pub, The Ship Inn, serving traditional pub meals and fresh seafood. Alternatively, head to the village hotel, The Lugger, for a locally sourced meal, or just for a cream tea on the terrace!

Did you know...

Portloe is regarded as one of the prettiest villages in Cornwall!

Things to do nearby

The Hidden hut - a 15 minute drive away. As its name suggests, this cafe is a real hidden gem, overlooking Porthcurnick beach. It serves a selection of light bites and homemade cakes during the day, and holds feast nights once a week, where large portions of amazing local food are served up outdoors. Tickets must be booked in advance for feast nights and customers have to bring a plate!

The Lost gardens of Heligan -  a 20 minute drive away. Rediscovered after being lost for decades, Heligan offers a fantastic day out for all the family. Explore the different gardens throughout the estate, enjoy the jungle with its own rope bridge and discover the history of the estate.

St Mawes - a 25 minute drive away. Head to the pretty village of St Mawes for the day and you'll be able to enjoy a selection of independent shops, cafes and restaurants. The village is also a popular spot for watersports, including kayaking and sailing. Or, why not take a boat trip along the River Fal to enjoy the beautiful scenery?

National Trust's Trelissick Gardens - a 30 minute drive away. This beautiful country house and gardens is perched on its own peninsular overlooking the Fal estuary. Enjoy meandering through the sub-tropical gardens (dogs welcome on leads) and learn all about the diverse history of the grande house.

Walks around Portloe

With direct access to the South West Coast Path, head North towards Caerhays beach and South towards Carne beach. Enjoy the breathtaking scenery of this stunning coast.

We had a fantastic week in Portloe staying at Rose cottage, Nothing to fault, everything was perfect! It exceeded our expectations and would definitely recommend, fantastic property didn't want to leave!

Great cottage with amazing views down the valley to the sea. Really well equipped and comfortable, and in a proper Cornish fishing village. You really do feel like you’ve gone back in time and are staying in a perfect coastal location. The whole family loved it.

Rose Cottage is an absolutely beautiful property with all the home comforts and mod cons that you could ask for. The interior is a wonderful blend of timeless character features and tasteful modern creating a warm and beautifully bright property. The beds and all lounging furniture both inside and out were of great quality and extremely comfortable which was a welcome bonus after long days hiking. The patio area was simply gorgeous and designed so that you could enjoy the stunning views from every angle. A lot of love and thought has clearly been put into this very spacious property which absolutely added to what turned out to be a gem of a holiday.

Rose Cottage is a beautiful cottage, in a stunning location, with excellent outside space and facilities. We enjoyed a wonderful relaxing week.

A spacious, well appointed cottage, with a stunning terraced garden. Lovely walks and there is no need to take an OS map - there is at least one there, plus a couple of walking guide books. The single parking space is up above, and behind, the pub car park. Additional cars can use the village car park, about a third of a mile away, for £2 per day; there is an honesty box. The kitchen is on the top storey, level-ish with the back gate, which is easily accessed from the parking space. We found it best to unload and load using the back door. Portloe is lovely and quiet, quite off the beaten track, with just a pub and a hotel. Even in wet weather, the view from the sitting room is amazing.

Rose Cottage is such a beautiful property, loads of space, gorgeous sea views and everything you could possibly need for a comfortable family holiday. Portloe is tucked away and peaceful, yet close to St Mawes, Megavissey and loads of lovely sandy beaches. We can't wait to return.

Rose Cottage was certainly a "get away from it all" place to stay, the Welcome pack was a nice touch as one evening we were able to have a cream tea outside on the patio area looking out towards the sea. We couldn't have asked for anywhere nicer to celebrate my birthday which fell during our week stay and we all said that it was somewhere we would definitely come back to.

This is a lovely well thought out holiday cottage in quiet Portloe with wonderful little outdoor terraced seating areas to enjoy the sea view. You do need to be able to cope with steps in this property.

A beautiful cottage, fabulously well equipped, tastefully decorated and furnished and with a great sea view from the upper lounge.

I didn't use the allocated garage due to the mud leading up to the garage door. Not a problem out of season as there is the pub overflow car park, but if very wet in season when it's busy (and Cornwall is often wet!) that could pose a problem.

Portloe itself has a church (though I heard nothing on Sunday), a pub and an hotel. No "corner" shop even for necessities which I found strange given the size.

The cottage is two doors down from the pub. Pub staff were friendly but the pub was in need of an overhaul (poor decor, dirty carpet etc.). In fairness to the landlady (new-ish) they had apparently only been given a week between moving in and opening and there was mention of a plan during the current lockdown to improve (though the task mentioned was varnishing the tables which I think was the least of the issues!). It would be unfair to judge their food given we ate only 2 days prior to lockdown and understandably they had limited offerings.

Went to the hotel (The Lugger) for a drink and to book lunch next day. We'd been looking forward to going for both but we found it lacking in atmosphere and on checking the menu, decided to cancel the lunch booking also.

All in all, fabulous cottage, but unsure whether we would return to Portloe.

Thank you for your comments. We are sorry to hear that the access path to the garage had got that muddy. Certainly, out of season, finding alternative parking nearby is not a problem, but at busy times, if the track is ever in a condition where it couldn't be used and alternative parking is not available, please do get in contact with us. The owner is always extremely helpful, and I am sure we would be able to do something to assist. It is a shame that Portloe isn't somewhere that you would return to. It is a small hamlet, so doesn't have all of the convenient shops and entertainment of larger villages/towns, but for many, this proves to be absolutely perfect for a peaceful escape. If you would like suggestions of other locations that may work better for you, please do not hesitate to get in touch with our very knowledgeable team. Tanya, Customer Services

Rose Cottage is a perfect hideaway property with a touch of luxury. The fixtures, fittings, furnishings and equipment are all top quality and probably the best quality I've ever had in a holiday home. The view from the lounge is fantastic if too cold to sit outside but the fabulous woodburner makes it nice and cosy if that happens. Lovely friendly management at the Ship Inn two doors away too. I will certainly be back when I need an escape!

Absolutely fantastic. Cottage is very spacious, full with everything you could possibly need and really feels like a home from home. But best of all was the views from the garden and living area! A morning coffee watching the sunrise from the comfort of the cottage. Couldn't ask for anything else! Highly recommended.

A super cottage in a tranquil location. The cottage boasts plenty of room for six people. The three different levels of terraces enables you to eat outside and also relax with a view of the sea. We would not hesitate to book again.

We would highly recommend this beautiful property. The owners have thought have everything. A very well equipped cottage including a great BBQ.

The views were amazing. We were very lucky with the weather but I would also stay in the Winter.

The cream tea and wine was very welcome on our arrival. Thank you

This is a gem of a cottage, and feels like a home. It is so well resourced; everything we needed was there. We enjoyed sitting out on the terraces at different times; afternoon tea and evening drinks on the tub chairs and dinner at the dining table on the top terrace. It all felt very private and was wonderfully peaceful. Thank you

We enjoyed our stay (first week of March) very much. The cottage is nice, comfortable, has everything you need and the views are excellent. We especially enjoyed the peace and quiet around the cottage and in Portloe. We didn't use the garage because it was very muddy and so we parked the car at the beginning of the lane that leads to the garage. We did a couple of great hikes on the South West Coast Path: to Carne Beach, Port Holland and Porhluney Bay and to Hemmick Beach and the Dodman. Don't forget to drive to the church in St. Just-in-Roseland. For dinner we enjoyed some fish and chips at The Ship Inn (the neighbour) and we went to The New Inn in Veryan (nice traditional pub with excellent food).

Great location. Excellent pub only two doors away. Loved the wood burners. Lot's of space.

Parking is not ideal, particularly in high season. The track to the garage at the rear became very muddy, to the extent that we stopped using it and we all parked at the other end of the village.

We are sorry to hear that the track to the garage became a bit of a problem; we will keep an eye on any further feedback on this; thank you for bringing that to our attention. We're glad that you otherwise had a great time and enjoyed the fantastic location of Rose Cottage. Tanya, Customer Services

The whole experience was fabulous from the start, booking was easy, directions to the property were spot on, the house was exactly as shown in the photos, parking was easy and the village was lovely. And the sun shone the whole time! When we are away self catering we like to use the house and kitchen. Rose Cottage was fully equipped with everything we needed, even a rolling pin. Everything was made available, they had shopping bags, beach bags, picnic hampers and even beach toys and windbreaks. It seems that the owners have thought of everything and they really want you to feel welcome The views are lovely from the garden and the dining room. The pub, next door but one, was very welcoming and the fish and chips were to die for! The staff at the Lugger Hotel were also very friendly, would recommend going for coffee, sit outside and soak up the sun and views of the harbour. The cottage is like a home from home. We were very comfortable here and will hopefully return in the near future. Rose Cottage is just perfect!

A fantastic house in a lovely location. The views from the living rooms on the upper floors and the outside space are splendid and the weather was kind enough for us to be able to eat on the outside table on a number of occasions. All the bedrooms were great and the beds were comfortable and the rooms quiet and dark at night. Generally the house was fantastically stocked and the fact that the owners use it regularly and enjoy it themselves shone through. We also very much appreciated the excellent information and guide to local services, businesses and places provided by the owners. We very much hope to return again soon.

A fantastic property that exceeded expectation - and that was difficult given what we had read about Rose Cottage. Facilities were top notch and it was extremely comfortable. The views absolutely stunning. Thank you for making our holiday a wonderful one.

We have just returned from a fantastic week at Rose Cottage. Our family consisted of six adults and a baby. The space within the cottage lends itself to togetherness but also space for privacy and downtime with a good book if needed. Hey, we all loved the UNO game as a family...............! All the furnishings, kitchen equipment and bedrooms (all very tastefully done) within the cottage has been well thought out by the owners, giving a very relaxed but functional feeling. We all slept well and deeply every night. The info book is a must read as it contains great info on the surrounding area. Our party of girls enjoyed a massage, facial and lunch at The Nare Hotel one day and a family lunch at the Hidden Hut another (food and views amazing). Plenty of coastal walks in between. The split level garden with it’s dining table and chairs, sun loungers and relaxing chairs is very private and such a sun trap. What fabulous views of the sea (also from the lounge window). To the right, as you look towards the sea, there is a hill above a wooded area where we watched deer feed and mingle every evening. The parking space for one car within a garage is a real bonus. Would we come back bet we much more to see and do.

Jayne Grace.

A wonderful cottage with bags of character, in a beautiful location. The extras provided by the owner were the best I have seen at a holiday cottage. There are staircases between the levels and a few steps, but the clever layout makes the most of the space and provides amazing views. The pub a few doors up from the cottage is really nice and great place to stop off after exploring the area.

Rose cottage is a loved and wonderful place to stay in a great location. We would highly recommended it to our friends and family’s.

We had a lovely stay at Rose cottage, stunning view from the living room. We stayed in December and the fire was really cosy in the evenings. It would be lovely to eat outside in the summer with a view of the harbour. Nice little pub only a couple of doors up the road and a fine dining hotel restaurant by the harbour, small shop around a 5 min drive away. Would love to stay here again, a bit out of the way but we personally like staying out of the way! Thank you for a great stay!

A really great comfortable, cosy cottage with fabulous views. It was so spacious and well appointed, we had a wonderful stay.

This was a delightful house and location for autumn week to 'chill out' regardless of weather. We felt that the owners had paid attention to details and written house notes in such a way to make us feel welcome as guests and relaxed.

Very handy to have such a friendly pub next door so we didn't have to cook each night. Simple menu but good food.

We loved being able to walk from the front door along the coastal path.

Will definitely come again.

It's a house most suited to couples and friends who want a very quiet, stress-free kind of break. I wouldn't bring small children or elderly folks due to the stairs and outside deck but it was lovely to just enjoy the views in comfort and peace. Thank you for making it available!

Amazing cottage well thought out by owners. Every home comforts imaginable

Thank you

This was a fabulous property that exceeded our expectations. We had a wonderful time enjoying the luxurious comfort, the garden terrace in the sunshine and of course that fabulous view of the sea. Walking around the cliff tops was brilliant as was listening to the lapping sounds of the ocean. The owners offer the cottage as a ‘home away from home’ and we really felt like welcome guests. Their choice of artwork and decor is beautiful and very relaxing. Their helpfulness with local information is great. Having a car park is pretty special in Portloe where space is a premium. We would highly recommend this property. NB there are two sets of steep stairs inside but we found we could do most of our living on the top level and access the property down some less steep stairs from the garage.

We loved our stay at Rose cottage! It is a charming property, a traditional Cornish cottage with all the modern comforts and very stylishly refurbished and decorated. It boasts spectacular views, and the open plan living space opening out onto a tiered garden area which looks out over the sea, really creates that holiday atmosphere and is a real pleasure to spend your evenings in.

The hosts had thought of everything. It was fantastically equipped and we had a lovely little welcome package. The aspects company were also extremely helpful and receptive with their service.

All in all, a truly fantastic stay.

Note to parents with toddlers... you will have to watch them as there are quite a lot of different levels in the property.
