A visit to the geothermal pool at Jubilee Pool

One of the hottest new attractions in Cornwall - literally - is the brand spanking new geothermal seawater pool at Penzance’s coveted Art Deco lido, which is the very first of its kind in the entire UK, making it a definite to-do for all visitors to the county.

Those keen to take the plunge in the stunning Blue Lagoon style pool will be treated to water temperatures reaching a beautifully balmy 35°C generated by a ground-breaking 400m-deep geothermal well system: the culmination of a decade-long project that sees Cornwall pave the way with one of the most sustainable, lowest-carbon forms of heating.

The innovative and eco-friendly addition now means that the pool is an all-weather prospect, so whether you fancy an early morning autumnal dip to warm your cockles or a sensory-laden experience in the height of summer, The Jubilee is most certainly the place to be.

The trio of tidal pool offerings features a shallow learner pool, a large main pool and sheltered geo-pool of varying depths, which also provides disability access via a ramp and specialist on-site aquatic wheelchair, while a raised concrete ridge ensures plenty of seating space within the pool itself.

The ‘hot rocks’ pool truly is as swoon-worthy as it sounds. Being immersed in the warm, salty aquamarine waters within the seductively curved pool structure is tantalising enough; but combine that with the sweeping bay-wide panoramas that stretch between Mousehole and St Michael’s Mount (complete with distant views of Britain’s most southerly point, The Lizard, to boot) and you really do find yourself in awe-inspiring territory.

Throw in a spa treatment (think Bespoke Rituals, holistic massage, Inlight organic facials and reflexology), cocktail on the suntrap terrace (or two) and leisurely siesta on a sun-lounger and The Jubilee has effortlessly redefined the act of relaxing by the sea.

Alternatively, anyone seeking something more adrenalised or active during their stay can pick from a plethora of activities including poolside yoga, stand-up paddleboarding, water polo, and a range of fun and fitness sessions such as inflatable wipeouts, lane swimming and Zumba.

What’s more, the pool stages a constant schedule of entertainment, with past events including art and craft workshops, group socials, markets, exhibitions, live music, and themed happenings.

Then there’s the café bar, which presents fuss-free alfresco dining and drinking to enchanting effect. A regularly changing daytime menu caters for breakfast (fresh pastries, filled brioche) and lunch (sandwiches, salad boxes, daily specials) alongside a lip-smacking array of light refreshments and snacks (Yallah coffee, cakes) all made using quality, locally sourced produce.

Linger awhile longer for an evening of pizza, seafood or burgers on the terrace accompanied by a Cornish craft beer or glass of wine as the sun dips into the ocean for the most delectable and ultra memorable endnote to your day.
