St Buryan Holidays

The centre of the village is dominated by the Grade I listed church,  which features the heaviest peal of six bells anywhere in the world! The church has the tallest tower in the area and if you’re lucky enough to be there on Tower Open Day and the weather is fine, you can see for miles.

While self catering in St Buryan, be sure to take a visit to the St Buryan Inn; a traditional county pub, serving up good pub food in a relaxed atmosphere, with a selection of Cornish ales on offer. There's also a corner shop for all your essentials whilst staying in a holiday cottage in St Buryan.

The parish is scattered with neolithic activity, such as the Merry Maiden stone circle, The Pipers standing stones, many burial chambers and ancient holy wells. Read more on the history of the area on our blog: West Penwith - Through the ages.

Events

Summer festivities include ploughing competitions and horse shows, which provide an enjoyable family day out. St. Buryan Rally at the end of July is a fantastic country day out.

Things to do near St Buryan

St Buryan is well situated to take advantage of the popular tourist attractions such as the Minack Theatre and St Michael's Mount.

Be sure to visit the nearby St Loy's Cove; a rocky beach which is accessed through a beautiful wooded valley. It's nearly always quiet too, making it great for taking in the surroundings in a peaceful location.

For more info and other ideas on what to do during your stay in St Buryan, read our blog on Days out around Penzance

With all this in mind it is easy to see why this popular tourist destination is perfect for a self catering summer holiday, short break or out-of-season visit.

Tom Bawcock's Eve, Mousehole

The tradition of Tom Bawcock comes from the feast or famine lifestyle of Cornwall.  The story goes that it was just before Christmas; there had been no fish for weeks, the boats couldn’t get out into the raging storm, the village was starving. One man, Tom Bawcock, dared to take his boat out of the harbour’s safety. He returned with enough fish to make fish pie for the whole village.

Today, a festival takes place each year to celebrate Tom Bawcock's bravery. During the festival, Star Gazey pies are eaten in memory of this famous event.
