Holidays in Penzance

On a sunny day, St. Michael’s Mount, Mount's Bay and Penzance seafront might be mistaken for the Mediterranean making holidays in Penzance a jet-set-style holiday you can enjoy without climbing on a plane.

Sitting in the corner of a sheltered and attractive bay, the UK’s most westerly town has been a popular resort since the Napoleonic wars when the wealthier English people were cut off from the continent and searched closer to home for fresh air and the newly discovered benefits of sea-bathing. The temperature in Penzance is always a little warmer than elsewhere meaning sub-tropical plants grow well in Morrab Gardens and in the gardens on St. Michael’s Mount. It also means balmy days on one of the nearby beaches are always calling.

Penzance is great for short breaks out of season and there are many boating trips from the harbour that will take you to explore the West Coast from the sea. Due to its excellent road and rail links, Penzance holidays offer something for everyone with lots to see and do. It’s also within a stone’s throw of some of the prettiest places to visit in Cornwall, which are always worth exploring during your stay.

Penzance has secret treats too if you take the time to explore. For a start, the very best way to see Penzance is by the alleys and walkways, the through-lanes from here to there. Take a day to discover the town this way and you will uncover its beautiful parks as well as its Regency and Georgian architecture.

Penzance also benefits from a wonderful community and comes alive throughout the year with different events and traditions that add waves of colour and music to the seaside town.

Did you know...

Penzance has one of the mildest climates in the UK!

Beaches in and near Penzance

With Mount’s Bay providing a beautiful alcove of beaches and the surrounding Penwith coast showing off exactly what west Cornwall has to offer, beach days in Penzance are always on the agenda.

Longrock Beach – Nestled halfway between Marazion and Penzance, this long stretch of sand is great for families. The water remains quite shallow, making it ideal for those who aren’t confident swimmers as well as windsurfers.

Marazion Beach – There are few views from the beach as impressive as Marazion where your beach day benefits from the impressive St Michael’s Mount standing guard over the bay. Stroll across the causeway at low tide, explore the rockpools or tuck into a fish and chips on the rocks.

Perranuthnoe Beach – With a beach café that serves delicious homemade cakes and ice creams, and a ramp for easy access, Peranuthnoe is popular with locals and visitors alike. The expanse of sand, which is second to none for sandcastles, means there’s plenty of room for everyone.

Places to visit near Penzance

Stay in a self catering cottage in Penzance and you’re perfectly situated to explore the surrounding towns and villages, each with their own individual characters and charm. Literally minutes from Penzance is the fishing port of Newlyn while a little further on you’ll find the quaint village of Mousehole with its harbourside bistro, community atmosphere and famous Christmas lights. Take a stroll along the coast to Marazion beach or venture in the opposite direction to the beautiful Lamorna Cove. For more ideas, check out our blog post on days out around Penzance.

Things to do in Penzance

Jubilee Pool

This beautiful art-deco open-air bathing pool is the UK’s largest seawater lido. There is also an excellent café and a delightfully warm geothermal pool. The pool opens from the end of May until September. Even in winter, some hardy year-round swimmers use battery rocks (just north of Jubilee Pool) for their daily dip!

Parks and gardens

Morrab Garden is a sub-tropical garden in the heart of Penzance with Victorian fountains and a bandstand, which still plays host to concerts in the summer. The Morrab Library sits in the gardens and is an absolute joy with its wonderful photographic archives and collections. Full of trees and squirrels, Penlee Park has a specific dog-free and child-friendly play area making it ideal for families.

Art galleries

Penlee House Art Gallery & Museum (with an excellent café) sits opposite the Penlee open-air theatre and is home to a large collection of Newlyn School paintings as well as more contemporary works. Along the various streets and alleys lie many other superb galleries featuring a mix of local and national artists. Further afield, you have the renowned Newlyn Exchange and the wondrous Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, which is home to many incredible sculptures throughout its grounds. Or, if you want to create your own art, why not embark on one of Penwith’s popular painting holidays to really make the most of Cornish scenery.

Shopping in Penzance

Not all town centres have the beautiful granite terrace and arcade steps, the iron railings; or retain the architecture of previous generations above the modern shop frontages that Penzance enjoys. There are many Georgian and early Victorian facades just above eye-level in Penzance giving a really unique backdrop to your shopping. By way of shops, you’ll find everything from boutiques to big names as well as delis and food shops that are jam-packed with tempting, locally sourced treats.

Walks

Penzance, with its recently resurfaced prom and surrounding coastline, is perfectly placed to enjoy some stunning Cornish walks. The further to the west you go, the more rugged and captivating the coastline – although be warned, in Penwith, the more beautiful the view, the steeper the trek to reach it! Our favourite stretch has to be between Mousehole all the way along to the Minack Theatre, which provides days upon days of incredible coastal walks. During your treks, make sure to keep an eye out for some of Cornwall’s ancient sites, which can be found scattered around the wild landscape.

Eating out

Penzance self-catering holidays are perfect; Chapel Street leads up from the harbour to the town centre where you will find a range of restaurants and pubs as well as independent shops and houses of historic interest and importance. Lavenders Deli on Alverton Street is ideal for stocking up on treats for your holiday cottage. Check out our blog on places to eat in Penzance for ideas on where to refuel.

Dog-friendly Penzance

With the sights and smells of the nearby beaches and plenty of dog-friendly pubs (Admiral Benbow is particularly popular with dogs and people alike), Penzance is a wonderful place for a dog-friendly holiday in Cornwall. There are also some great dog-friendly beaches nearby so you can enjoy a proper romp in the sand with your furry best friend.

Events in Penzance

Golowan Festival – Happening every year towards the end of June, Penzance’s Golowan Festival (also known as Mazey Day) is a bright and cheerful celebration of midsummer and promises an array of colour, music and festivities. Watch the parade of intricate puppets that dance through the streets, cheer on the Morris dancers and browse your way through the collection of stalls that sell everything from jewellery to mouth-watering foods.

Penzance Literary Festival - One for all the bookworms out there, the Penzance Literary Festival in July celebrates words in all forms from written to spoken to sung! Come along and catch the many performances, take part in literary discussions and even try your hand at creating your own stuff with the many workshops that take place.

Christmas in Penzance – With Christmas lights turning the whole stretch of coast between St Michael’s Mount and Mousehole into a glittering display, a jovial walk (or drive) is always a great way to get in the festive spirit. In town, you’ll find shop windows awash with intricate displays that tie in with a chosen theme as businesses from all over the town take part in an annual Christmas competition to dazzle shoppers. Santa never misses Penzance when doing the rounds, as you can always find him sitting happily in his grotto during the light switch on. Fairs, processions, and costumed antics take place throughout December, so you’re always in for a spectacle or two when you visit at Christmas.

Getting around

Literally at the end of the line, Penzance is well-placed for holiday makers that prefer the train to a car. For those wanting to tour Mount’s Bay on foot (or on two wheels), there is a superb path that runs right the way along from Marazion to Mousehole, making excellent use of the promenade in Penzance. You can often find food vans along the prom, allowing for a quick refuel with a view during your jaunt. For those with a car, there are numerous car parks around the town as well as in the surrounding villages so you can enjoy Penwith by foot, car, bike or even boat!

Excellent view, lovely place to stay

Amazing view and lovely location. Very good customer service from Aspect when we had an out of hours issue which they sorted efficiently and quickly.

Another lovely stay at this comfortable apartment. Great location. Perfect to watch the sea. Ideal for walking to Mousehole and Marazion .or further .Great train links and bus links on your doorstep..Looking forward to coming again.

The Penthouse is comfortable, great location, secure development, car parking space, clean linen and towels. Good size balcony. Stunning views. The development is quiet and the communal areas kept very clean and tidy and the area where the bins are stored also kept very clean and tidy. We are staying again in 2024. The Penthouse feels like home. Nothing too much trouble for Aspects Holidays.

Great apartment with lovely views towards Mounts Bay and Penzance Harbour. Although on a busy road it quietened down at night. In an excellent position close to the railway and bus station if holidaying without a car. Would definitely stay at the Penthouse again.

A lovely apartment with fabulous views changing daily. So convenient for the town buses and trains. Great to have secured parking.

Great location comfort of apartment was really good lovely views and right near bus and train stations so we left our car in the parking area and used public transport to get about it was so easy I highly recommend this apartment and would love to return when we can

We have stayed at the Penthouse numerous times now and we always have a great stay. The apartment is really well equipped, very clean, has secure on site parking, a large balcony with views to St Michaels Mount and Mounts Bay. The kitchen area has everything you need including, a freezer, washing machine and dishwasher. We tend to leave the car and use public transport, the bus and train station are only a short walk away. All the major supermarkets are close by and there are a good variety of independent shops in Penzance. The local Aspects team are very helpful, should you need them during your stay.

Great location, 5 minute walk from bus, train station and shops, great view from balcony. Highly recommend.

This was our sixth visit to The Penthouse over the past view years and, from the moment we entered the property and saw the spectacular view of Mount's Bay, it felt as though we had returned to our second home. There are so many beautiful beaches and coastal walks with stunning scenery nearby and we are already looking forward to returning.

We have stayed at this apartment several times, and it never disappoints. The views are lovely and Penzance is a great base, for exploring Penwith.

Not as clean as I would have liked lovely views i would not call it a penthouse apartment yes you are on the top floor but the apartments next door are higher And come out further which blocks the views to the left ! Good location for town buses and trains and good parking also I don't think it should be called a penthouse as when we arrived we took the lift to the top floor only to find the apartment lower down ! I think it should say top floor of second level .

Reply from Aspects Holidays

We are very sorry if the standard of cleanliness was not to the high level that you would have expected, we can only apologise if any areas had been missed. The Penthouse is on the top floor of the building, but some the neighbouring apartments are over two floors. While these appear to be higher, you are still on the top level and can enjoy the benefits of The Penthouse's large terrace, offering those stunning views. As you've mentioned, the property is opposite the train and bus station, meaning you can leave the car in the private parking space, and explore further afield! Katy, Customer Services.

Fantastic apartment with all that you need for a comfortable stay from gated private parking to very comfortable beds, sofas and a a chair. All the kitchen utensils and appliances you will need. Fantastic sea views, very close to railway and bus stations and close to the town centre and harbour. Please don’t let the road and railway track outside the house put you off booking this great property you don’t hear either when in the apartment and it’s nice to see the trains coming and going as well as the Scillonian ferry back and forth to the Isles of Scilly.

Lovely apartment, superb location and view. Loads to do - thoroughly relaxing time and we were lucky enough to have wall to wall sunshine in late Feb/early March but it was cold!

The Penthouse is spacious and comfortable. Great having a balcony, excellent views. Great location. Own parking space. The Penthouse is in a lovely development. My husband and I enjoyed it so much we have booked to go back for two weeks later in the year. Thank you to the owners and for the cream tea that was waiting for us on arrival.

Great location, lovely cosy well equipped apartment. A real bonus with parking provided and being allowed early access due to awful weather. The views are stunning prime location for buses and exploring the area. Will definately be back here again.

Perfect location for visiting many areas of Cornwall and so close to the bus and train station as well as the town centre. Secure parking is so good too. Wonderful views from the apartment which change daily. We have already booked our 3rd visit to The Penthouse.

An excellent apartment that fully lives up to expectations. The service from Aspects is brilliant.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Penthouse. This was our first time in Cornwall and it was an ideal base for visiting sites along the coast with easy access for cars buses and trains. We had a beautiful view over St Micheal's mount from the apartment and it's equipped with everything needed. The highlight of our trip was a local boat trip to see the seals and dolphins just off the coast and a trip to Sennan cove. We will definitely be back.

Excellent location with a lovely sea view and very clear arrival instructions via e-mail.

This is our 5th visit to the Penthouse. We love the view of Mount's Bay from the balcony, main bedroom and lounge and the ease with which we could access the bus and train stations to enable us to enjoy long coastal walks and visits to lovely gardens, including Trengwainton and Lanhydrock. We were grateful for the welcome pack of scones, cream and jam and the delivery of clean linen for our second week, which arrived very promptly.

We have stayed at the Penthouse several times, and it does not disappoint. Everything you need is provided, very well equipped, and furnished. The views over Mounts Bay are lovely. It is close to the rail and bus stations, so you can leave your car in the secure car park and easily use public transport. All the shops and supermarkets are close for your self catering holiday. We have already booked our holiday for 2023.

Fantastic views, perfectly situated for train and bus station and town. Although it has the main road and railway line opposite we didn't find the noise intrusive.

The apartment is well equipped, comfortable, clean and well designed, making for a very relaxing stay. The view from the main living areas across the bay to St MIchael's Mount is wonderful and there is the added interest of activity on the water and at the rail station to enjoy. It's proximity to the rail and bus hubs makes it an ideal place where you can safely leave the car and explore the pleasures of the West Cornwall coast and countryside. This was our third visit and we would happily return.

Great property in a great location with stunning views. Everything you need is there we love it.

Second visit to the penthouse, superb location, with great views across mounts bay, in a great location for the transport links across the south west, this would be our perfect retirement apartment if it ever comes up for sale :-)

We had a really great stay here. Everything was there that you could possibly need and high quality. Lovely walk to Mousehole and Marazion and a great train ride along the bay to St Ives. Didn't want to leave especially as we were lucky enough to have sunshine every day. What a view to wake up to.Highly recommend.

The Penthouse is in an excellent location directly overlooking the sea from the lounge and master bedroom. Has a huge balcony where you can sit and watch the world go by.

Clear views of the many trains arriving/departing into the station - you are not disturbed by them at all.

The apartment has everything you could possibly need and is so very clean and comfortable with high spec furniture. appliances and bedding.

Staying for New Year, we were treated to a lovely decorated Christmas Tree and provided with Mince Pies and Clotted Cream, along with a pint of Milk.

Such a peaceful accommodation, great for sitting watching the beautiful view and a very short walk to the Town. Ideal for non drivers who can travel around Cornwall by either bus or train. Those driving have use of the gated car park.

Thank you for a great start to the New Year :-)

The Penthouse had everything you would need for a relaxing holiday. The lounge and main bedroom had fantastic views across the bay to St Michael’s Mount and the furnishings in all rooms were extremely comfortable. The railway and bus stations were a very short walk from the premises, if you didn’t want to use your car, as was the main shopping street and restaurants. There was a small welcome pack in the kitchen consisting of coffee sachets and tea bags with a carton of milk in the fridge and some clotted cream to go with the scones and small pot of jam, a very nice touch after a long journey. There was a large balcony across both the lounge and main bedroom and was a real sun trap and could have benefited from having more than a two seater wooden bench and small low level coffee table, which was a shame as the rest of the property was outstanding when it comes to holiday rentals. We had a very relaxing week at the Penthouse with the bonus of summer temperatures in October.

The Penthouse is in a great position for walking into town. The view across to St Michael's Mount was lovely. It's a very spacious apartment, well furnished with just the bathroom being a little tired.

We booked a week in The Penthouse in Penzance. Ideal location, beautifully furnished home from home. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and wouldn’t hesitate to book again. Thank you

A lovely, clean and very well equipped apartment, close to the bus and railway station and all major supermarkets. Great views, lovely to sit on the balcony and watch the boats and trains. We have stayed here several times before and have not been disappointed. We are already booked in for 2022

just perfect and we were happy with everything

Lovely apartment with stunning views from the balcony. Train and bus station within a 5 minute walk, so really easy to get around too. Would recommend this apartment to everyone.

This is twice we've used Aspects in Penzance. The apartment is so clean. Didn't have to bring one utensil with us this time. Everything in its place. Amazing views over to Marazion, St Michael's Mount and to Scillonian 3 ferry to Isles of Scilly which we did in October. Local amenities on door step. Parking is an issue and is a huge bonus to have private parking at Aspects. Highly recommend.

Really nice holiday. Great location a few minutes walk into the town. Nice walks close by to Mousehole and Marazion. Great that parking is locked and key code entry felt safe. Nice warm comfortable property with great views. Everything you need there including dishwasher, really enjoyed our time in Penzance

Lovely views across the sea and onto St Michaels Mount, and really close to the train/bus station which was really helpful for us as we did not have a car and relied on public transport to go to various parts of West Cornwall.

However, I would warn that the provisions of teabags, coffee, dishwasher tablets and toilet roll were quite low so to bring your own. There were also a lot of scatter cushions around, which do not comply with the covid guidelines, and no hairdryer provided as this was deemed "non-essential".

Overall we had a lovely stay at the Penthouse.

Reply from Aspects Holidays

Thank you for your review. We were delighted to see that you had a lovely stay and enjoyed the amazing views from the property overlooking the bay and St Michaels Mount. There should always be enough tea/coffee, toilet roll etc. to get you started when you arrive to a property, as we know it is always nice to put your feet up with a cuppa after a long journey, but as the property is self-catered you will usually need to bring/buy the remainder of these things when you arrive. We were sorry to see that you felt there were too many scatter cushions in the property when you arrived. These should be limited at the moment, unless it is possible (with spare covers etc) for the housekeeper to be able to rotate them between bookings. You will therefore see that some properties/owners are able to keep a few more items in situ for guests' comfort, when compared to other properties. Thanks for taking the time to send in your comments and we hope to welcome you back again soon. Ben, Customer Services

Very nice apartment in a great location. We had a great week and would recomend it for a holiday, we will come again!

The Penthouse overall is an excellent apartment with every facility although a few COVID 19 guidelines unfortunately not adhered to. In saying this we would highly recommend holidaying there with a few tweaks made in regard to the current situation.

Reply from Aspects Holidays

Thanks for your feedback, we just wanted to reassure you that the owners housekeepers all have very clear guidelines regarding COVID 19. We understand that your main concern was around the decluttering of the property, particularly regarding the soft furnishings. Housekeepers and the property owners have been instructed to remove all unnecessary items, but some will leave more in than others, depending on what is deemed to be manageable by the owner and their housekeeper. Anything that is left behind needs to be able to withstand disinfecting weekly and any soft furnishings that remain, sofas etc are changed weekly or sprayed with antibacterial products. We do understand the concerns at this time but hopefully this helps to put your mind at rest. Tanya, Customer Services

Once again we have stayed at the Penthouse, and it has not disappointed. So clean, and well equipped - everything you need is provided. Lovely to sit on the balcony, and enjoy the views. Great location as a base to explore from, train & bus station, very close. Large supermarkets, Tesco, Sainsbury's & Morrisons, all within a short car ride.

Amazing views, was a great base for our family of three. Very close to Penzance centre So we could eat out easily and get provisions

Fantastic views. Very comfortable accommodation. Great location . Penzance at its best

As I have stayed here previously I have already written a review which is on you website.

Stayed at The Penthouse with my best friend for a week from 22nd June, 2019. The apartment was clean, comfortable and everything needed on arrival to get the holiday off to a start. The view from the balcony was absolutely amazing and would be tough to beat anywhere. The Harbour on one side, St Michaels Mount on the other and the railway station in the middle. Absolutely perfect view. It's only a five minute (if that) walk to the bus and train station. So getting around on public transport, as we did, was so easy. I would reccommend this property to anyone visiting Penzance. And Aspects Holidays will provide you with all the information you need prior to arrival.

I have no hesitation recommending The Penthouse. A very comfortable apartment, really well equipped with great views over Mount Bay. It's close proximity to both the local bus and train services made it easy to travel around without having to use the car. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay in this excellent accommodation.

Easy to book, locate and get in. Stunning view. Very well equipped.

The Penthouse over all was lovely, great views of the bay

We felt instantly at home in the apartment, which was spotless and modern and had everything you could possibly need.Add on the great view (we watched the Scillonian leave and return almost every day!)and the handy parking and you really couldn't wish for a better home from home for a holiday.

Great apartment, great view, extremely confortable and clean. Very well equiped - "A home from home".

We found The Penthouse an ideal holiday home. It is easily accessible, very well maintained and comfortable, with the most magnificent views. It was hard to tear ourselves away with so much to enjoy just from the window. We chose it, partly, for its proximity to the bus terminus and railway station so that we could forget the car and yet visit the beautiful SW coast path walks, bays and villages with ease. It worked perfectly! Thank you to all concerned with providing and maintaining the property.

What an absolutely amazing apartment! Miles nicer than it looks in the photos. We were astounded on arrival! Breath-taking sea views from the living room and bedroom. Everything was crisp, clean, modern and comfortable. The perfect location for exploring Penzance or jumping on a train to just about anywhere. We had the most wonderful honeymoon here and would return! Very very impressed.

Fantastic apartment, great location and really thoughtful little touches which made our long weekend in Penzance extra special. We would highly recommend!

brilliant views out over the bay. Very cosy. Everything that you needed - that you hadn't packed had been thought of. Brilliant location. would book again

Excellent location, perfect for Visiting the many beaches and towns around the south west, great views across Mounts bay

This apartment is fabulous, inside there is everything you could need for a comfortable stay, especially the extremely well equipped kitchen. Outside, there's a lovely balcony with quite the view! Great for enjoying a glass of wine on a summers evening. Within walking distance to all that Penzance has to offer.

Amazing view from the lounge looking out to sea and watching the Isles of Scilly ferry departing and leaving.
