We have stayed at SeaSalt three times now, it is a two storey comfortable apartment for two with a large deck and a fabulous view. We stayed there for the week before Christmas and enjoyed the festive atmosphere of Newlyn and the surrounding area. There are many good restaurants close by and this time we discovered the Victoria Inn at Perranuthnoe where the food was delicious. West Penwith has some wild and wonderful coastal scenery with many beautiful walks to explore and nearby Penzance has some interesting shops. Highly recommended!

December 2023

The sea view was fantastic and we both enjoyed watching the fishing boats coming in and out. Very relaxing and quiet. In all 10 out of 10

Holidays in Penzance

On a sunny day, St. Michael’s Mount, Mount's Bay and Penzance seafront might be mistaken for the Mediterranean making holidays in Penzance a jet-set-style holiday you can enjoy without climbing on a plane.

Sitting in the corner of a sheltered and attractive bay, the UK’s most westerly town has been a popular resort since the Napoleonic wars when the wealthier English people were cut off from the continent and searched closer to home for fresh air and the newly discovered benefits of sea-bathing. The temperature in Penzance is always a little warmer than elsewhere meaning sub-tropical plants grow well in Morrab Gardens and in the gardens on St. Michael’s Mount. It also means balmy days on one of the nearby beaches are always calling.

Penzance is great for short breaks out of season and there are many boating trips from the harbour that will take you to explore the West Coast from the sea. Due to its excellent road and rail links, Penzance holidays offer something for everyone with lots to see and do. It’s also within a stone’s throw of some of the prettiest places to visit in Cornwall, which are always worth exploring during your stay.

Penzance has secret treats too if you take the time to explore. For a start, the very best way to see Penzance is by the alleys and walkways, the through-lanes from here to there. Take a day to discover the town this way and you will uncover its beautiful parks as well as its Regency and Georgian architecture.

Penzance also benefits from a wonderful community and comes alive throughout the year with different events and traditions that add waves of colour and music to the seaside town.

Did you know...

Penzance has one of the mildest climates in the UK!

Beaches in and near Penzance

With Mount’s Bay providing a beautiful alcove of beaches and the surrounding Penwith coast showing off exactly what west Cornwall has to offer, beach days in Penzance are always on the agenda.

Longrock Beach – Nestled halfway between Marazion and Penzance, this long stretch of sand is great for families. The water remains quite shallow, making it ideal for those who aren’t confident swimmers as well as windsurfers.

Marazion Beach – There are few views from the beach as impressive as Marazion where your beach day benefits from the impressive St Michael’s Mount standing guard over the bay. Stroll across the causeway at low tide, explore the rockpools or tuck into a fish and chips on the rocks.

Perranuthnoe Beach – With a beach café that serves delicious homemade cakes and ice creams, and a ramp for easy access, Peranuthnoe is popular with locals and visitors alike. The expanse of sand, which is second to none for sandcastles, means there’s plenty of room for everyone.

Places to visit near Penzance

Stay in a self catering cottage in Penzance and you’re perfectly situated to explore the surrounding towns and villages, each with their own individual characters and charm. Literally minutes from Penzance is the fishing port of Newlyn while a little further on you’ll find the quaint village of Mousehole with its harbourside bistro, community atmosphere and famous Christmas lights. Take a stroll along the coast to Marazion beach or venture in the opposite direction to the beautiful Lamorna Cove. For more ideas, check out our blog post on days out around Penzance.

Things to do in Penzance

Jubilee Pool

This beautiful art-deco open-air bathing pool is the UK’s largest seawater lido. There is also an excellent café and a delightfully warm geothermal pool. The pool opens from the end of May until September. Even in winter, some hardy year-round swimmers use battery rocks (just north of Jubilee Pool) for their daily dip!

Parks and gardens

Morrab Garden is a sub-tropical garden in the heart of Penzance with Victorian fountains and a bandstand, which still plays host to concerts in the summer. The Morrab Library sits in the gardens and is an absolute joy with its wonderful photographic archives and collections. Full of trees and squirrels, Penlee Park has a specific dog-free and child-friendly play area making it ideal for families.

Art galleries

Penlee House Art Gallery & Museum (with an excellent café) sits opposite the Penlee open-air theatre and is home to a large collection of Newlyn School paintings as well as more contemporary works. Along the various streets and alleys lie many other superb galleries featuring a mix of local and national artists. Further afield, you have the renowned Newlyn Exchange and the wondrous Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, which is home to many incredible sculptures throughout its grounds. Or, if you want to create your own art, why not embark on one of Penwith’s popular painting holidays to really make the most of Cornish scenery.

Shopping in Penzance

Not all town centres have the beautiful granite terrace and arcade steps, the iron railings; or retain the architecture of previous generations above the modern shop frontages that Penzance enjoys. There are many Georgian and early Victorian facades just above eye-level in Penzance giving a really unique backdrop to your shopping. By way of shops, you’ll find everything from boutiques to big names as well as delis and food shops that are jam-packed with tempting, locally sourced treats.

Walks

Penzance, with its recently resurfaced prom and surrounding coastline, is perfectly placed to enjoy some stunning Cornish walks. The further to the west you go, the more rugged and captivating the coastline – although be warned, in Penwith, the more beautiful the view, the steeper the trek to reach it! Our favourite stretch has to be between Mousehole all the way along to the Minack Theatre, which provides days upon days of incredible coastal walks. During your treks, make sure to keep an eye out for some of Cornwall’s ancient sites, which can be found scattered around the wild landscape.

Eating out

Penzance self-catering holidays are perfect; Chapel Street leads up from the harbour to the town centre where you will find a range of restaurants and pubs as well as independent shops and houses of historic interest and importance. Lavenders Deli on Alverton Street is ideal for stocking up on treats for your holiday cottage. Check out our blog on places to eat in Penzance for ideas on where to refuel.

Dog-friendly Penzance

With the sights and smells of the nearby beaches and plenty of dog-friendly pubs (Admiral Benbow is particularly popular with dogs and people alike), Penzance is a wonderful place for a dog-friendly holiday in Cornwall. There are also some great dog-friendly beaches nearby so you can enjoy a proper romp in the sand with your furry best friend.

Events in Penzance

Golowan Festival – Happening every year towards the end of June, Penzance’s Golowan Festival (also known as Mazey Day) is a bright and cheerful celebration of midsummer and promises an array of colour, music and festivities. Watch the parade of intricate puppets that dance through the streets, cheer on the Morris dancers and browse your way through the collection of stalls that sell everything from jewellery to mouth-watering foods.

Penzance Literary Festival - One for all the bookworms out there, the Penzance Literary Festival in July celebrates words in all forms from written to spoken to sung! Come along and catch the many performances, take part in literary discussions and even try your hand at creating your own stuff with the many workshops that take place.

Christmas in Penzance – With Christmas lights turning the whole stretch of coast between St Michael’s Mount and Mousehole into a glittering display, a jovial walk (or drive) is always a great way to get in the festive spirit. In town, you’ll find shop windows awash with intricate displays that tie in with a chosen theme as businesses from all over the town take part in an annual Christmas competition to dazzle shoppers. Santa never misses Penzance when doing the rounds, as you can always find him sitting happily in his grotto during the light switch on. Fairs, processions, and costumed antics take place throughout December, so you’re always in for a spectacle or two when you visit at Christmas.

Getting around

Literally at the end of the line, Penzance is well-placed for holiday makers that prefer the train to a car. For those wanting to tour Mount’s Bay on foot (or on two wheels), there is a superb path that runs right the way along from Marazion to Mousehole, making excellent use of the promenade in Penzance. You can often find food vans along the prom, allowing for a quick refuel with a view during your jaunt. For those with a car, there are numerous car parks around the town as well as in the surrounding villages so you can enjoy Penwith by foot, car, bike or even boat!

5 star and very highly recommended. The reverse level annex has everything you could want. Chris and George were there if we needed them without being intrusive. The view from the living room and huge balcony is out of this world. A short walk takes you to Newlyn which has many restaurants and pubs. Our recommendations would be Duke Street Café for coffee and breakfast, Lewis Fish and Chips for a takeaway, and The Swordfish beer garden just to sit and listen to the fishermen in the evening. We will be coming back.

Great location to visit all surrounding places.. Apartment is wellset out but requires up dating to keep it in line with others. Hosts are a great couple. Willi g to offer advice and help whete to visit..
Would we stay again.... not for a while... would need to see big improvements

Thank you for your feedback, we are glad to hear you enjoyed the property's location. We try to offer a wide range of properties that we hope will meet a variety of different budgets and individual tastes. Many owners like to intentionally offer something that doesn't follow what the majority are doing, in the hope of offering something more unique. And we always try to price properties to take into account the many factors including facilities on offer, location, views, size, style of décor and so on, so we do still hope that you found it good value. Your comments are automatically sent on to the property owners, so that they can consider any suggestions for future improvements though, so thank you for the helpful comments. Loved the deck and lounge overlooking the sea, it was very easy to unwind and relax on the comfortable sofa, and the bedroom and bathroom were conveniently located downstairs. The owners George and Chris next door were very helpful and friendly. It is a short walk to Newlyn Gallery which has two good shows on at the moment and I bought a lovely painting. There is a wonderful fish restaurant nearby called Argoe, with excellent food.

We stayed at Seasalt 6th May 2023 for 7 nights, excellent location for travelling around Cornwall, excellent bus service day/weekly tickets available. Apartment was great with fabulous views over St Michael's Mount & Newlyn Bay. Hosts were friendly and very helpful would definitely recommend a visit.

Very well situated. Fantastic views from brilliant balcony. Well equipped. Comfortable with very good shower room. Excellent choice of local restaurants. Certainly value for money.

Lovely Views from Balcony and Lounge, lots of Places to Visit,

Sea Salt is a superb place to stay, it has everything you could need for a fantastic holiday! It is really peaceful, yet close to both Newlyn and Penzance and has the most amazing view. For those like us who are using public transport it is very close to the bus stop making it easy to get to both Penzance (and onward by either bus or train) or to Mousehole, if you don't fancy walking. We couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. Chris was lovely, she called in shortly after we arrived to check that we had everything we needed. We cannot recommend Sea Salt highly enough!!

Sea Salt in a good location (more Newyln than Penzance). Good restaurants/cafes close by. Friendly owners.

Stayed first week in August 2022... 3year on trot and already booked up for next year. Location great. Views from apartment excellent....

Our apartment in Newlyn was lovely, great location, short walk to local shops, Newlyn has everything you need for your holiday, bus service to Mousehole, and you can walk into Penzance if you want to be next to the sea, great views!

Fantastic location, peaceful but minutes away from local shops and pubs. Very well equipped and comfortable apartment with a fabulous balcony that had sun all day. The buses go from just round the corner, or you can stroll into Penzance to the main bus station. Highly recommended, absolutely perfect for 2 people.

Sea salt is a lovely, comfortable holiday apartment with a fantastic balcony and amazing views in a perfect location . We loved watching the ships, boats and investigating where they came from. The friendly and helpful hosts George and Chris gave us a warm welcome and interesting informations about Cornwall and the surrounding area. The weather was mostly very good over the three weeks. We were able to visit great gardens such as: Trengwainton, Trewidden, Godolphin and Glendurgan. They all delighted us with a splendor of flowers and a sea of ??bluebells. The maze in Glendurgan Gardens was really fun. But we also enjoyed various walks on impressive and beautiful beaches (Sennen Cove, Penhale Sands and Holywell Bay, Godrevy Beach, Kennack Sands). Cornish mining history with all the tin and copper mines was very interesting, especially the tour of the Levant mine. And then there's Tintagel Castle, St Michael's Mount (it's a must see) the beautiful Isles of Scilly, the impressive Minack Theater and charming villages and towns. We also explored the food festival in Porthleven and enjoyed Michael Cains' cooking there. And there... In short, we had the best three weeks of vacation that one could wish for.

If you are interested in children's books, why not read Chris' great books in the evening!

Absolutely loved our stay at Sea Salt! Incredible panoramic views towards St Michael's Mount and the harbour. We loved sitting in the sun and watching the boats and birds. Pure relaxation! Great location to walk into Newlyn or Penzance and a short drive to other great places such as St Ives. The owners were friendly and helpful. So pleased we were able to swap our dates from last year (due to lockdown) and it was worth the wait! Apartment had everything we needed. We loved visiting Kynance Cove and Bedruthan Steps - these are further out but stunning! You will not regret your stay here! We can't wait to go back another year!

Great location with an amazing view

Amazing view over the bay, great place to chill out and enjoy the seaside. The owner were very friendly and very helpful, they made us feel very welcomed.

Sea Salt is a lovely apartment with stunning views of St, Micheal's Mount and the Harbor of Newlyn. Great central location for accessing all Cornwall has to offer. George and Chris are more than happy to offer advice on the best places to visit and are friendly and very welcoming. We had a lovely time at Sea Salt and are looking forward to returning next year.

This is a lovely property, in a great location for exploring this area and has the best balcony and views we have ever had on a holiday to West Cornwall. We will return.

Thank you George and Chris for welcoming us and making us feel at home. Your local recommendations of the Tolcarne inn, Tonkins fish for their catch of the day & mackerel sky Tapas restaurant were spot on! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay with fantastic scenic views on the lovely sun balcony overlooking Newlyn and St Michaels mount.

For future guests we recommend checking out Mousehole, Lamorna Cove, Penberth Cove, Porthcurno, Porthchapel (beware of steep climb down to get their though) and Nanjizal cove.

We will definitely be recommending to family and friends. Thank you again George and Chris x

This was a memorable place and the views could not be beaten. The family owned flat is so comfortable and the owners on hand easily if you need them. Great place to walk and close to lovely local shops.

Brilliant location, lovely hosts and apartment felt like home from home

It couldn't have been better. We had an excellent time at Sea Salt. Lovely accommodation. Fantastic sea views and idyllic balcony. Very quiet and peaceful at night. Easy access to the seafront and the surrounding towns and villages. Shops and pubs all within walking distance. I would love to go back there again. I thoroughly recommend it.

Nice apartment, lovely views. It felt like a home away from home. Would recommend to others thinking about visiting.

Sea Salt is a beautiful property that boasts brilliant seviews across the whole bay. The property size is ideal for two persons and the house has a good layout. Chris and George are very friendly and helpful. The restaurants, pubs and the new wine bar in Newlyn are only a short stroll away, as is Penzance and its famous Jubilee Pool.

This was our second year at Sea Salt and we are very pleased with everything it has to offer. The apartment is great and the views are unbeatable. Newlyn is becoming a really good centre for a Penwith holiday, it has so much to offer and had amazing character. I am hoping we will be able to return soon. I should say that the main house was having some building work done but it in no way impacted on our holiday. I have never known builders so considerate and quiet.

Yet another fantastic stay at Sea Salt, made even better having our 5 month old daughter with us! Chris & George are wonderful hosts. This is a gem we would return to again and again...

We can recommend the property "Sea Salt" without any limitations: perfect location, perfect equipment and what a view on Mount's Bay!

Lovely views, it felt like home from home. Chris and George were always on hand if needed. We would return to this property without question. The weather was a bonus hot and beautiful.

Sea salt is a truly beautiful apartment with a lovely balcony and stunning view out to sea and across to Newlyn harbour.

It is in a lovely location for visiting the area, the view from the balcony is exceptional, Private parking is available, the layout is really good.

Excellent cottage with lovely views out to sea

This is a lovely cottage, very well appointed and in a great location giving easy access to great sightseeing particularly in the Lands End and Lizard areas. The reverse sleeping and living accommodation, particularly the balcony allow great views over St Michael's Mount and Newlyn. We thoroughly recommend it to anyone.

Having the owners next door is a great comfort and it was a pleasure to meet them.

A very comfortable flat with everything you need for a holiday, and a superb view!
