Holidays in Penzance

On a sunny day, St. Michael’s Mount, Mount's Bay and Penzance seafront might be mistaken for the Mediterranean making holidays in Penzance a jet-set-style holiday you can enjoy without climbing on a plane.

Sitting in the corner of a sheltered and attractive bay, the UK’s most westerly town has been a popular resort since the Napoleonic wars when the wealthier English people were cut off from the continent and searched closer to home for fresh air and the newly discovered benefits of sea-bathing. The temperature in Penzance is always a little warmer than elsewhere meaning sub-tropical plants grow well in Morrab Gardens and in the gardens on St. Michael’s Mount. It also means balmy days on one of the nearby beaches are always calling.

Penzance is great for short breaks out of season and there are many boating trips from the harbour that will take you to explore the West Coast from the sea. Due to its excellent road and rail links, Penzance holidays offer something for everyone with lots to see and do. It’s also within a stone’s throw of some of the prettiest places to visit in Cornwall, which are always worth exploring during your stay.

Penzance has secret treats too if you take the time to explore. For a start, the very best way to see Penzance is by the alleys and walkways, the through-lanes from here to there. Take a day to discover the town this way and you will uncover its beautiful parks as well as its Regency and Georgian architecture.

Penzance also benefits from a wonderful community and comes alive throughout the year with different events and traditions that add waves of colour and music to the seaside town.

Did you know...

Penzance has one of the mildest climates in the UK!

Beaches in and near Penzance

With Mount’s Bay providing a beautiful alcove of beaches and the surrounding Penwith coast showing off exactly what west Cornwall has to offer, beach days in Penzance are always on the agenda.

Longrock Beach – Nestled halfway between Marazion and Penzance, this long stretch of sand is great for families. The water remains quite shallow, making it ideal for those who aren’t confident swimmers as well as windsurfers.

Marazion Beach – There are few views from the beach as impressive as Marazion where your beach day benefits from the impressive St Michael’s Mount standing guard over the bay. Stroll across the causeway at low tide, explore the rockpools or tuck into a fish and chips on the rocks.

Perranuthnoe Beach – With a beach café that serves delicious homemade cakes and ice creams, and a ramp for easy access, Peranuthnoe is popular with locals and visitors alike. The expanse of sand, which is second to none for sandcastles, means there’s plenty of room for everyone.

Things to do in Penzance

Jubilee Pool

This beautiful art-deco open-air bathing pool is the UK’s largest seawater lido. There is also an excellent café and a delightfully warm geothermal pool. The pool opens from the end of May until September. Even in winter, some hardy year-round swimmers use battery rocks (just north of Jubilee Pool) for their daily dip!

Parks and gardens

Morrab Garden is a sub-tropical garden in the heart of Penzance with Victorian fountains and a bandstand, which still plays host to concerts in the summer. The Morrab Library sits in the gardens and is an absolute joy with its wonderful photographic archives and collections. Full of trees and squirrels, Penlee Park has a specific dog-free and child-friendly play area making it ideal for families.

Art galleries

Penlee House Art Gallery & Museum (with an excellent café) sits opposite the Penlee open-air theatre and is home to a large collection of Newlyn School paintings as well as more contemporary works. Along the various streets and alleys lie many other superb galleries featuring a mix of local and national artists. Further afield, you have the renowned Newlyn Exchange and the wondrous Tremenheere Sculpture Gardens, which is home to many incredible sculptures throughout its grounds. Or, if you want to create your own art, why not embark on one of Penwith’s popular painting holidays to really make the most of Cornish scenery.

Shopping in Penzance

Not all town centres have the beautiful granite terrace and arcade steps, the iron railings; or retain the architecture of previous generations above the modern shop frontages that Penzance enjoys. There are many Georgian and early Victorian facades just above eye-level in Penzance giving a really unique backdrop to your shopping. By way of shops, you’ll find everything from boutiques to big names as well as delis and food shops that are jam-packed with tempting, locally sourced treats.

Walks

Penzance, with its recently resurfaced prom and surrounding coastline, is perfectly placed to enjoy some stunning Cornish walks. The further to the west you go, the more rugged and captivating the coastline – although be warned, in Penwith, the more beautiful the view, the steeper the trek to reach it! Our favourite stretch has to be between Mousehole all the way along to the Minack Theatre, which provides days upon days of incredible coastal walks. During your treks, make sure to keep an eye out for some of Cornwall’s ancient sites, which can be found scattered around the wild landscape.

Eating out

Penzance self-catering holidays are perfect; Chapel Street leads up from the harbour to the town centre where you will find a range of restaurants and pubs as well as independent shops and houses of historic interest and importance. Lavenders Deli on Alverton Street is ideal for stocking up on treats for your holiday cottage. Check out our blog on places to eat in Penzance for ideas on where to refuel.

Dog-friendly Penzance

With the sights and smells of the nearby beaches and plenty of dog-friendly pubs (Admiral Benbow is particularly popular with dogs and people alike), Penzance is a wonderful place for a dog-friendly holiday in Cornwall. There are also some great dog-friendly beaches nearby so you can enjoy a proper romp in the sand with your furry best friend.

Events in Penzance

Golowan Festival – Happening every year towards the end of June, Penzance’s Golowan Festival (also known as Mazey Day) is a bright and cheerful celebration of midsummer and promises an array of colour, music and festivities. Watch the parade of intricate puppets that dance through the streets, cheer on the Morris dancers and browse your way through the collection of stalls that sell everything from jewellery to mouth-watering foods.

Penzance Literary Festival - One for all the bookworms out there, the Penzance Literary Festival in July celebrates words in all forms from written to spoken to sung! Come along and catch the many performances, take part in literary discussions and even try your hand at creating your own stuff with the many workshops that take place.

Christmas in Penzance – With Christmas lights turning the whole stretch of coast between St Michael’s Mount and Mousehole into a glittering display, a jovial walk (or drive) is always a great way to get in the festive spirit. In town, you’ll find shop windows awash with intricate displays that tie in with a chosen theme as businesses from all over the town take part in an annual Christmas competition to dazzle shoppers. Santa never misses Penzance when doing the rounds, as you can always find him sitting happily in his grotto during the light switch on. Fairs, processions, and costumed antics take place throughout December, so you’re always in for a spectacle or two when you visit at Christmas.

Getting around

Literally at the end of the line, Penzance is well-placed for holiday makers that prefer the train to a car. For those wanting to tour Mount’s Bay on foot (or on two wheels), there is a superb path that runs right the way along from Marazion to Mousehole, making excellent use of the promenade in Penzance. You can often find food vans along the prom, allowing for a quick refuel with a view during your jaunt. For those with a car, there are numerous car parks around the town as well as in the surrounding villages so you can enjoy Penwith by foot, car, bike or even boat!

Great location, good for walks, pubs & restaurants. And for Buses & Trains. Also great for parking. Great views

Comfortable spacious cottage in excellent seafront location.
Free parking is possible on the promenade right opposite the cottage. However, be aware during high tides as large waves can bring up pebbles etc.

We are so pleased to hear you enjoyed Fairings Cottage and thank you for providing parking suggestions for future guests. If a little more protection is required, you will find St Anthony's Long Stay just a five-minute walk from the property. Thanks again for your review. Lucy, Customer Services

Amazing cottage. Beds were comfortable. Great garden at front of property. Near to shops, pubs and restaurants. Would definitely recommend to family and friends.

Great house for location and facilities very comfortable, a home from home.

Loved the location, the cottage was lovely with beautiful gardens to the front facing directly onto the promenade. We made good use of the outside seating area. The kitchen was very well equipped, we only made breakfast as there are so many places to eat out. There were seats in the bay windows and from the upstairs room there was a glorious view of St Michaels Mount. They have thought of everything - even binoculars! A great base for exploring. A lovely walk into Mousehole and you can get the bus back. Would definitely look at returning in the future

A lovely home from jhome cottage, great location for all amenities, very well equipped with everything needed for self catering. Good view of the changing sea. Good value,

Would highly recommended Fairings Cottage, the house, sea view, garden and location are excellent . Valerie, May 2023.

A lovely small house in an excellent location. A fairly busy road outside, but quiet at night. There is an excellent garden sitting area gated off from the other part of the garden. Kitchen was excellent. There were plenty of video CDs available9for (rainy days).

Lovely well equipped cottage in a great location, garage very useful as parking on street can be difficult at times.

A lovely stay at fairings cottage. In the perfect location for beautiful sunrises over St Michael's Mount. A comfy homely base to explore locally. Would highly recommend.

Fairings Cottage is beautiful. Very comfortable and cosy and tastefully decorated and furnished. Great location for walking either way and close to Penzance. Our first stay in Penzance as we normally visit St Ives but it certainly won't be our last visit and hopefully we will return to Fairings Cottage. Situated on the promenade it was lovely for people watching and looking out over the sea. We loved it and were sad to leave. We didn't use the garage as it was November and parked on the opposite on the promenade. A great choice all round.

A lovely cottage to watch the dynamic changing weather from. Perfectly located for Penzance and Newlyn with too many restaurants to choose from. A home away from home.

If you're leaving the car behind for plenty of rest and exhilarating day trips as well as relaxed days, this is the place for you! Although there is a garage, we loved the freedom to roam without any concern about where to park. Jubilee Geothermal Pool was a really big highlight and the relaxing treatments there were also fantastic. The bus station served by the open top buses provided spectacular trips out to St Michael's Mount and multiple trips to St Ives. Newlyn with our favourite seafood bar Mackerel Sky and the Cinema were just a few minutes walk and we really appreciated the convenience of having the supermarkets just moments away from the cottage.

We walked to Newlyn fish market to buy freshly caught fish and fry at home and when we felt less adventurous, Frasiers Fish and Chips was a minute away. The Katsu curry sauce with fish and chips was fantastic.

As for the cottage, it is beautifully appointed with traditional features coupled with a very special experience with the rainfall shower and the beautiful lighting behind the circular mirror. large fluffy towels and exceptionally clean and comfortable bedding provided a very relaxing experience. We particularly appreciated the owner providing very nice toiletries in both bathrooms which lasted our entire stay and we were able to refresh immediately on arrival without having to visit the local supermarket.

Look out for a very friendly curious ginger cat in the front garden. Our daughter loved playing with the cat. Although October, we enjoyed bright sunshine on most days and really enjoyed sitting in the lovely rocking chair in the garden.

Nights were very calm and peaceful and we enjoyed very restful sleep. Having the two bathrooms really helped to get ready for adventurous days out. The cottage was fully equipped with everything we needed during our stay and we really have great memories from our visit. Thank you Aspects and the owners of the cottage for a memorable and relaxing experience.

Beautiful cottage, perfect location overlooking the bay, St Michael's Mount, Newlyn and the lovely garden, everything is just beautiful. Petra und Thomas

Beautiful cottage - ideal location - well equipped - lovely garden to sit and have a drink or two - luckily the weather was perfect so we had a wonderful holiday. Dave and Eileen - Kent

A great location a great cottage.

A beautifully appointed cottage in a great location. Lots of nearby free parking if you're lucky but the property does benefit from the use of a garage although access is extremely tight and suits small to medium cars only. Paid parking nearby and free after 6pm until 8/9am. Would definitely choose this cottage for a few stay. Lots of lovely eateries/bar. Would definitely recommend The Honeypot and 45 Queen Street.

This is the third occasion we have used Aspects and would highly recommend them. The cottage was lovely, well equipped and furnished. The garden in the front was very attractive and is very pleasant to sit in. Well placed for buses and train services. Whilst at the cottage we experienced a personal problem, we contacted Aspects Penzance office for advice and they were very supportive and helped resolve the difficulty. The Penzance Office are an example to some of the larger holiday companies in their commitment to clients.

Fabulous stay at this property, will certainly come again, thank you.

Delightful cottage in a great location - pubs, cafes, Jubilee Pool, easy coastal strolls all close by. Convenient access for all of Penzance and excellent public transport links.

Absolutely wonderful cottage, excellent furnishings, bathrooms and kitchen. Very well equipped. Sea views from the front windows and front landscaped garden with a comfortable seating area.
Especially nice to have left some of the granite walls and original features.
Great location.
Try the jubilee pool cafe for coffee or lunch, it’s just down the prom.
However, as mentioned, the garage is very small so be prepared to park on the sea front if you have a larger car.
Also the stairs were quite steep, especially at the top. If you have any mobility issues such as arthritis, as we have, they could be problem! An extra hand rail would have helped! Manageable but something to consider when booking.
Otherwise all was excellent and wine and biscuits on arrival was a good welcome.

Thank you for your feedback. We are glad that you enjoyed this lovely property. Being a traditional Cornish granite-built cottage, they do tend to have slightly quirkier layouts and steeper, narrower stairs that what most of us are used to in more modern homes, but they all add to the lovely character and charm of these places. We always try to include photos or something in the description that will highlight these kinds of quirks and hope that with the picture that we have included on the website, of the stairs to the first floor; this was what you were expecting when booking. We will monitor for any further feedback, and if we need to make anything clearer, we will always make the necessary amendments. Thanks again and hopefully we will see you back here in Cornwall soon. Our stay at Fairings Cottage was a delightful and relaxing experience. A perfect location overlooking the sea, St Michael's Mount and the Newlyn coast. We could walk into Penzance centre in a few minutes and to Newlyn for amazing fresh fish. There are great restaurants, take aways, cafe's, galleries and pubs close by. Parking was fine when we stayed but there is a garage available too. We loved the log burner, comfortable beds, modern bathrooms and kitchen. The washing machine and heated clothes dryer came in handy too. We rebooked Fairings Cottage whilst staying there and can't wait to return later this year!

Just back from a great stay in Fairings Cottage. It has a fantastic location and is well setup to make for a relaxing stay.

Perfect location, the cottage was lovely and had great views, So easy to get anywhere, with a station and bus service so near. Plenty of restaurants and pubs close too. We loved it.

Great week at Fairings warm and comfortable to come back to after varied January weather! Plenty of places to eat and drink open can recommend The Godolphin at Marazion and 2 Fore St Mousehole. Look forward to returning again next winter.

Perfect house right on the seafront. Comfortable and cosy, thoughtfully updated with plenty of character. We loved being able to walk up into the centre of Pz for shops/pubs etc and enjoyed the walk along the front to Newlyn, so it was ideally situated for us. We hope to return - soon!

A wonderful cottage, which is presented to a very high standard. The furnishings are beautiful, comfy clean beds and with everything you could possibly need and more! The surrounding areas are an easy drive to, and we found some beautiful quiet beaches. All amenities are a short walk away. We would definitely recommend The Fairings.

However, the road was busy all day and it was difficult to park on the promade, even in October. Also, there is a garage available, down a narrow alleyway, but we got blocked in for a complete day...

It certainly sounds like this property was just perfect for your visit to Cornwall. We are glad that you enjoyed it and enjoyed exploring this beautiful area. We were sorry to hear that someone's inconsiderate actions meant that you could not get out of the garage on one of your days here. This isn't something that we have heard of happening there before, so we hope that it was a one-off. We appreciate that this must have been disappointing, especially if you had planned to go out for the day, but please rest assured that we will investigate it further if it happens again, as we would hate for this to be something that continues to cause guests an issue. Thanks for letting us know. Tanya, Customer Services

Thoroughly recommend Fairings Cottage with it's excellent location for touring south Cornwall. Beautifully tastefully furnished and amenities great quality. Super bathrooms. Facility to unload and pack car outside fantastic bonus. Loved having the sea views and prom to walk along. Really enjoyable stay and would re-book if we decided on Penzance area again.

A thoughtfully refurbished property with a great layout and even better location. The two large bathrooms are a huge bonus and the power shower to die for. Multiple eating options inside and out keep the family happy and the front garden is simply beautiful. Looking out to Mounts Bay from either your bedroom window or the yard bistro area is a delightful pastime. The free parking opposite and ability to unload right outside the back door make it the best cottage we have stayed in.

A fabulous cottage in an excellent location, the cottage has everything you need to enjoy your stay, curtains in the bedroom for us sensitive sleepers would be the icing on the cake, would definitely recommend the Fairings and Aspect who were very helpful.

Quirky Cottage great location. Zebra Crossing is around the corner so lovely coffee on the prom first thing. Very happy.
