March 2024

Amazing views from the lounge and bedroom, the football table room with TV was favoured by my two children! If staying with a dog, one particularly nice and safe 'off the lead' dog walk about 10 minutes drive away at Trevaylor Woods, has a river for the doggie and lots of tree swings for the kids! The walk from Newlyn to Mousehole was stunning. Favourite pub in Newlyn Fishermans Arms although food is on the pricey side (kids meals reasonable).

Holidays in Newlyn

Newlyn is a traditional Cornish fishing town which is home to one of the largest fishing fleets in the UK. Stroll along the pretty harbourside and you’ll be able to spot beam trawlers, long liners, crabbers and small open boats used for hand-lining.

Experience the buzz of a thriving, hardworking harbour and taste the freshest fish on offer in Cornwall. The harbour is overlooked by white washed and granite Cornish fisherman’s cottages interwoven by narrow lanes and cobbled alleys often too steep or narrow for a car so all you will find is the odd cat basking in the sunshine. Enjoy the buzz of Newlyn’s working harbour, visit Newlyn Art Gallery or the wonderful established gardens with breath-taking views across to the iconic Penzance Jubilee Pool.

Locally caught seafood can be purchased from the bustling fish market, fishmongers or at one of the fantastic harbourside eateries. Escape to Newlyn for a self catering holiday in a peaceful setting, within easy reach of Mousehole, Penzance and St Michael’s Mount.

Top tip

Be sure to treat yourself to a Jelberts ice cream when staying in Newlyn!

Newlyn art community

The Newlyn School is a group of artists who came to live and work in Newlyn or the surrounding area between the 1880s and the early twentieth century. They painted en plein air (in the open air). Perhaps best known are: Stanhope Forbes, Elizabeth Forbes, Walter Langley, Harold Knight, Laura Knight, Harold Harvey. There is much documentation about the school at Penlee House.

The collection is kept at Penlee House rather than the Newlyn Gallery because Newlyn Gallery maintains a tradition of showing modern art.

Newlyn Gallery & Exchange Gallery in Penzance Town Centre host the best of conceptual and modern art. Together with St. Ives Tate and Penlee House the four galleries host major national and international exhibitions, as well as showing the work of the Newlyn School of Art, who offer a wide range of high quality art courses run by some of the most exciting artists in the region. Read more about art classes at Newlyn school of art on our blog. Thus the area which has inspired so many artists celebrates its artistic heritage while maintaining strong links with the art world of today.

A lovely place to stay especially if you're on a course at Newlyn Art School. Great view, comfortable beds, good shower, nice kitchen with the right equipment.
Lots of good places to eat near by.

Lovely & spacious- clean and well outfitted. Beautiful views as shown in pics. Easy walk into Newlyn.. or Penzance.. The hill's a workout if walking back!

Thank you for your comments. Porth Gwelva is perched above Newlyn, making the most of those views overlooking the bay. As you rightly say, it involves an uphill walk back up to the property after a day in the town or exploring some of the sites in and around Newlyn, Mousehole and Penzance, so some may prefer to opt for a bus or taxi ride back if you don't fancy driving or walking. If you do walk though, we are sure you will agree that the scenery along the way certainly makes it worthwhile. We look forward to welcoming you back again! Phoebe, Customer Services

Porth Gwelva was a great place to stay, newly decorated, great location with walking distance to great restaurants in newlyn and close to Penzance for a good walk along the pier.

This accomodation was offered to us due to a problem with our original booking ... it far exceeded our expectations... the view is fantastic ... a delight to see from bedroom and living area ... the place was clean and fresh ... a brilliantly equipped kitchen and thoughtful touches... like clingfilm ,foil ,oil salt and pepper ... we love Newlyn

A comfortable, beautifully presented property with great views of Newlyn Harbour and Mount's Bay.

Super stay, great location. House has everything needed for a lovely break!

Porth Gwelva is a lovely property. Very clean and beds were very comfortable. We struggled to find it at first but only because we hadn't read the instructions properly so went down the wrong street! There was a boxed cream tea waiting for us on our arrival which was very nice and thoughtful. Lovely view from the living room and balcony. Would recommend this property.

A wonderful stay at this property - excellent location and great views across the harbour. The kitchen is really well-equipped. Everything was immaculate. We will definitely be back!

We’ve just enjoyed a fantastic week at Porth Gwelva. It’s very clean and well equipped. From the back of the house, we enjoyed the beautiful views across the harbour and watched the fishing boats for hours. Although it’s just a short walk down the hill into Newlyn, the walk back may challenge some but as parking can be tricky, it’s definitely worth it. There are lovely walks from the house either to Penzance or to Mousehole and so many great places to visit nearby in the car. We tried to ‘shop local’ while we were there. We can recommend Trelawney for fresh fish, the butchers - lovely sausages, Lewis’ Fish & Chips and the Duke Street Cafe was fabulous. The service from Aspects Holidays also deserves a mention as it was second to none. We hope to book Porth Gwelva again next year.

Very beautiful property and we will definitely book again from aspect. Happy customer. ??

Fabulous stay can’t fault it

Fantastic Property, warm comfortable and has everything you could need. Great position and parking available, which in Newlyn is a major plus. We loved this place

Porth Gwelva is a lovely property overlooking Newlyn harbour, it has great sea views and is only a five minute walk to the centre of town.

The property itself is nice and modern with all the mod cons, we as a family especially liked the table football in the games room on the ground floor.

We will definitely be returning

Lovely cosy house with great sea views towards Mounts Bay.

A beautiful, exceptionally clean property with stunning views and the bonus of a parking space. Friendly neighbours. Easy to walk to both Mousehole and Penzance from here.

Excellent stay in a fabulous property!

Really enjoyed our stay at Porth Gwelva. It was spacious and comfortable with a wonderful view. Great to have parking but do make sure you only have a small to medium size car!

Reply from Aspects Holidays

It was great to hear how much you enjoyed Porth Gwelva. Parking is quite limited in Newlyn, so to have parking right outside is a huge bonus of this property. It is only suitable for a small to medium car though, so we try to make that as clear as possible in the description and hope that this was what you were expecting. Tanya, Customer Services

Absolutely fantastic place to stay. Lovely and clean with a fantastic view. Would highly recommend.

Porth Gwelva was a very clean and comfortable house to base ourselves. It had a great view of Newlyn Bay and we spent several evenings on the balcony with a bottle of wine. Great base from which to visit Sennon Cove, Hayle, St. Ives, Mawgan Porth and several other fantastic beaches. Nice to walk to Penzance.... Great food at The Navy Inn and The Dolphin Inn. Newlyn has a quirky charm to it. Would definitely stay again.

Just back from a week in Porth Gwelva, Newlyn. What a great house! Beautifully furnished. No expense spared. Kitchen so well equipped. The views from the balcony, lounge and front bedroom are wonderful. Parking space outside the house a real asset in Newlyn. Would definitely recommend this property and hope to return. 5 Star!
