Smuggler's Cottage
Mevagissey

£534 - £1350 per week
Book

Steeped in history, this 18th terraced century cottage clings to the cliff side and offers wonderful views over the harbour. Almost certainly used in the past to stow contraband, Smuggler’s Cottage is quirky and full of character – it has even been used in two films! The cottage has been beautifully renovated with some of the rare, original Cornish features kept to give a glimpse into it’s colourful history. Suitable for families or couples, the cottage is the ideal place to relax and enjoy the sea air. After a long day exploring or at the beach, the outside decking, perched up high like a bird’s nest, offers beautiful views over the harbour and Mevagissey, ideal for sitting and relaxing and watching the sun go down.

With Mevagissey harbour on your doorstep and the bustling shops just a minutes walk away, there is plenty to see, do and eat without having to travel far. Head to one of the many local beaches and spend long days soaking up the sun, playing beach games and enjoying a picnic or a Cornish pasty.

Fabulous little cottage. Clean, very comfortable and really well-equipped (all the kitchen utensils you could possibly need, iron, hair dryers, clothes airer, washing line outside on the lower part of the roof terrace…) Comfy beds and even an extra mattress topper should we find the mattress too hard (we didn’t). Lots of personal touches around the cottage; we particularly enjoyed learning about the history of the place from an informative folder and seeing the photos of the past generations of the owner’s family. Lovely walk-in shower in the ground floor shower room. The walk to the cottage from the car park took us 10 minutes on average, at a brisk walking speed, the final part being uphill, but the views you get from the top are worth it! Lots of lovely beaches in the area, our favourite was Porthluney which is a 15 min drive away, with a car park that was never too busy, cafe and toilets. We found Aspects really efficient in dealing with our queries and would not hesitate to book through them again.

July 2023

We are a group of friends from Austria and wanted to spend a week at Cornwall, so we choose Smuggler's Cottage at Mevagissey for our stay. We couldn't make a better choice, we enjoyed all time of our stay! The cottage is so nice and cosy and the views of the different rooms are so lovely! But the best is the roof top terrace, which we used every day for drinking coffee, having dinner or playing cards. We can only recommend this lovely cottage! And we can also really recommend Aspects holidays, because all information and organisation was perfect!

Holidays in Mevagissey

Stay in Mevagissey and you’ll be perfectly placed to explore all that the south coast of Cornwall has to offer. Take a ferry trip to Fowey, visit the Lost Gardens of Heligan or spend a day at the beach at the nearby Pentewan Sands.

Best known for its harbour and fishing boats, Mevagissey still boasts as being part of Cornwall’s thriving fishing industry. Fresh fish can even be bought from the hut on the harbour wall, located a short stroll from the village aquarium, once the lifeboat station. Wander around the harbour area, with its narrow streets, fascinating shops and galleries and recall its smuggling history, or just relax in the bars and restaurants and coves and on nearby beaches.

There is a ferry boat which runs from end of April to beginning of October from Mevagissey to Fowey three or four times a day (don’t miss the return journey!) – journey time about 35 minutes. You may be lucky and spot some playful dolphins!

Had a fantastic week at Smugglers-cottage as a family of four with two teenagers! It is very well located on the harbour with picture perfect views from all the windows. I have next stayed in such a well equipped property, even had toys for younger guests.

The outside terrace is lovely but unfortunately we did not have the sunshine to enjoy it, I imagine it would be a lovey place to sit and finish the day!

It was great being so central as we could pop out for a coffee or a beer without needing to drive anywhere. There are lots of cafés very close by, and a great fish and chips to take away.

I would highly recommend a stay here, as long as stairs are not an issue.

A wonderful relaxing week at Smuggler’s Cottage. A beautifully clean and comfortable cottage in a perfect location. Highly recommend.

The cottage was in a lovely location overlooking mevagissy harbour. But be warned if you are old or infirm the walk is a slog up the hill and will be a task for those not fit. Parking is provided but is 400m away in a public car park. This cottage is more for fitter people due to its location and is set on 3 floors with a nice roof top Terrace in the high back garden. Views are block a little by the building pitched roof. Mevagissey has nice quiet beaches the one to the east is up the hill along the path in front of the cottage and then down a long stair case to the shoreline. Be warned like most of the south Cornish coast everything is up and down hill. Local pubs around the harbour at nice but expensive it’s a bit touristy and one pub has seating for locals and we caught one of the staff on a bad day as she was a little off with customers. The curry house mevagissy spice was very friendly and we’d recommend that plus you bring your own alcohol … bargain.

Reply from Aspects Holidays

Although just minutes from the harbour, being up on the cliff side, overlooking the harbour, with pedestrian only access, will involve a bit of a steep walk up to the property, so this may not suit everyone. We include some details of this on the website, but if anyone would like further information before booking, the bookings team are always happy to help. We were sorry to read that you experienced that attitude while out. We are sure that there will be the odd person around like that, but on the whole, the locals are very welcoming and friendly, so we hope that this hasn't deterred you. It certainly sounds like you had a lovely time though and hopefully we will see you back again soon. Aspects Holidays Customer Services

Perfect location, parking was so easy and the walk to the cottage was easy to do for all the family even after a day out.

I left some notes in the visitors book ?? and I am happy for you to use them on the website

We have just enjoyed a weeks stay at Smugglers Cottage. It has fantastic views and is perfectly situated within very easy reach of the harbour and it's interesting shops, The Cornish Bakery which is spot on for breakfast pastries and coffee and not forgetting The Fishermens Chippy for tea!

The cottage is very comfortable and clean with everything you could possibly need for your stay. The outdoor space upstairs is perfect for relaxing after a busy day sightseeing - we were lucky enough to enjoy good weather too which is an added bonus. A perfect location for getting out and about (especially Heligan), or just to stay put and enjoy Mevagissey.

Smugglers Cottage is a joy to spend a holiday in. You couldn't get much closer to the water's edge and have the added bonus of being able to visit the glorious pubs, restaurants and shops of Mevagissey, all within a few yards from your front door. The standard of the furnishings and equipment in the cottage is of a very high standard with every need catered for. We had a wonderful week in Mevagissey and I would recommend Smugglers Cottage as a lovely place to stay. I also have to recognize everyone at Aspect Holidays who are a friendly and helpful team and make the overall holiday experience stress free and a simple process. Thanks for a great holiday. Steve

Smugglers Cottage is a really spacious, well located cottage. It was a great size for our family of 4 - the children loved the snug area/reading nook outside their bedroom and we all loved the roof terrace. Shame that we only got to use it once as the weather wasn't great, but I think you always have to lower your expectations for the weather during October half term! The walk to and from the car was slightly inconvenient, but not unbearable. Just be sure to make sure you don't leave anything behind! The little luggage cart provided helped make unloading/reloading the car much easier. Mevagissey is a really sweet little place. You're really spoilt with having so many lovely shops and cafes to wander to within a minute of the doorstep. Being right on the coastal path too, there is so much to explore locally whether you want to walk, run or just potter.

Great week at an excellent property. Be aware there's a 5 -10 min walk to the car park with your holiday clothes, food etc A fold up trolley is provided which proved invaluable. Car parking is included - just drove into the carpark, told them we were staying at Smugglers and a weeks pass was provided. No vehicular access - the slope isn't too steep but may be challenging for those with mobility issues - we used it as an excuse to have more scones due to the extra exercise! Can definitely vouch for the fish and chips from the takeaway at the corner of the harbour, so good we had them twice. Eating out wasn't a great hassle, most places allowed walk up rather than booking (may be the time of year). Would definitely return, although not in peak season - I imagine the little streets would be overrun in July!

Smugglers Cottage is a lovely place to stay. It’s quirky, comfortable and has everything you could possibly need for a great holiday. Lovely views of the harbour and, with a parking space close by, a great base for exploring the local area. Would definitely recommend.

Smugglers cottage was a very nice place .we all loved our stay and would stay there again,

We've just returned from a lovely week staying in the smuggler's cottage. The cottage is very well decorated and cosy. The history of the cottage was interesting. We loved the 'secret beach' Polstreath even though there were 200 steps to get to it! We had a good day out at Pentewan as well. The eating out options in Mevagissey were good but you do need to book weeks in advance.

Fabulous historic cottage right on the harbour front in Mevagissey. The roof terrace has wonderful views of the harbour and is in a sheltered position so we got a lot of use out of it. There are a lot of stairs in the property (it’s over 3 floors) but we loved the convenience of having a bathroom on each floor. The house was really clean and had all the basics that we needed, including some lovely touches such as a folder with the history of the house and even better fresh scones on arrival! Parking in the local car park is only 5 minutes walk away and felt very safe.

Great cottage. Super village. Parking away from the house a little bit of an inconvenience, but worth it once settled. Walks from the door on the coastal path and a beach within 10 minutes. Book up popular restaurants in advance as this is the staycation year. Enjoy.

Lovely unique little cottage in our favourite village. We had a really relaxing time and it was the perfect location overlooking the harbour - kept our 2 year old very happy watching the fishing boats out of the window. The cottage is very comfortable and well equipped with everything that we needed during our stay. Particularly like the folder of information about the cottage that the owner has provided as it was really nice to see its history and answered a lot of the questions we had about the quirky little features inside the cottage. Found several lovely places to eat and it there was plenty to keep our family occupied in Mevagissey without having to get in the car and drive which was a nice change for us. Excellent customer service from Aspects too - so we would definitely recommend. Thank you for a lovely week, hope to return very soon.

Without doubt the best and well equipped cottage I have stayed in. I cannot recommend Aspects Holidays highly enough and will definitely be booking through them again. Thank you for making our holiday such a memorable one.

We enjoyed a wonderful break in a lovely location. Cottage was comfortable and clean. Customer Service from Aspect Holidays was very good. Particularly as there was an office in Mevagissey.

Fantastic week staying in this historic harbour side cottage. Good to read all of the owners' information on the family history of the property. Lovely to be able to wander around the harbour in the evening after all of the crowds had disappeared. Great location with lovely beaches and walks nearby. The only drawback was lack of places to eat due to covid restrictions.

First class property and everything made easy.

We very much enjoyed this charming cottage in a great location with fantastic views of the harbour. Particularly liked the small touches like the history of the property and detailed instructions and recommendations.

A lovely little cottage in a lovely little town. This is a great base for exploring this part of Cornwall. The lovely historic cottage has some lovely views of the harbour. The little dining terrace at the back of the property was a nice surprise. There's a good selection of pubs and restaurants in the town and some great walks available right from the cottage too. Take the ferry to Fowey for a nice day out, or there are plenty of lovely places to visit, including some lovely beaches in the area too.
