Holidays in Bude

Carrying the title of Cornwall’s northern-most coastal town, Bude is perfectly placed to enjoy some of the north coast’s beautiful beaches and coastal walks.

Bude has so much to offer when it comes to things to do, including a fabulous town with a wide selection of independent shops, cafés, and restaurants – not to mention the wildest live music venue in Cornwall. In addition, visitors can meander along Bude Canal, stretch out on one of the many beaches, or enjoy a gentle cruise in a pedal boat or kayak, observing the beautiful area from a different angle. The town is home to the historic Bude Sea Pool and The Castle Bude, both a must if you are in the area.

For those who enjoy walking, the South West Coast Path can be easily accessed from Bude. You’ll be blown away by the stunning scenery and breathtaking views along the coastline – it’s also a great dog-friendly day out!

With so much on the doorstep, it’s the perfect destination for a holiday by the sea!

Top tip

Take a dip in the historic Bude Sea Pool at Summerleaze Beach!

Beaches in Bude

Each with its own character and charm, the beaches in Bude are great whether you’re a swimmer, surfer or sand-snoozer.

Summerleaze Beach – Boasting the iconic sea pool, and only a five-minute walk from the centre of Bude, Summerleaze Beach is Bude’s central hub of sand, surf, and sun. Clean, safe, and easy on the eye, Summerleaze Beach is a big hit with surfers, sun-bathers, and families. However, it’s the sheer variety of activities that mark Summerleaze as arguably one of the best beaches in Cornwall for outdoor pursuits and watersports so definitely swing by if you love a hands-on holiday.

Crooklets Beach – At low tide, you’ll find a huge expanse of golden sand along with lots of rockpools to explore, making it very popular with families. There’s also decent surf and lots of amenities nearby including a beach café for those all-important ice creams and even a skate park.

Widemouth Bay Beach – Stretching across one and a half miles of golden sands, Widemouth Bay is divided into two halves, the North beach and the South beach, separated by a natural barrier of rock known as Black Rock. As the tide retreats, amazing rock formations are exposed - perfect for rockpooling and getting back to nature!

Northcott Mouth Beach – Three miles North of Bude is the small rocky beach Northcott Mouth, which is owned by the National Trust. As the tide drops, the beach opens up to expansive sand with rockpools dotted all around - perfect for exploring with the dog all year round.

Things to do in Bude

Whether you love spending your time surrounded by the coast or countryside, there are plenty of exciting things to do with the whole family in tow.

Bude Castle

Ordinarily, a castle built on the sand might not seem like the best idea, but Bude Castle has really stood the test of time! Built around 1830, the castle was formally the home of Victorian inventor Sir Goldsworthy Gurney. It’s now a heritage centre with lots of fascinating exhibitions and art galleries, making this impressive feat of architecture an interesting day whatever the weather.

Bude Bike Hire

Why explore the beautiful surrounding area of Bude on four wheels when you can head out on two! There’s a great selection of bikes available for hire around Bude, which suit all ages and most abilities – saddle up!

Bude Sea Pool

Opened in 1930, this partially man-made tidal swimming pool in the rocks of Summerleaze beach provides a lovely, safe place to swim, perfect if you’re not ready to swim in the sea. The pool is open all year round, but of course, it depends on the tide and weather, so always check before heading out.

Surfing & Watersports

Based near Summerleaze beach, Bude Surfing Experience provides water sports equipment hire and watersports lessons so you can hit the waves running as you try your hand at surfing and stand-up paddleboarding!

Alternatively, Freewave Surf Academy at Widemouth Bay offers surfing, coasteering and SUP lessons, while Big Blue Surf School offers a range of surfing lessons, from complete beginners to advanced.

Shopping

There is a range of lovely shops in Bude where you can stock up on all the usual holiday essentials. Head to Banford’s Bude, Jemima Rainbow, or Wildwood Cornwall for unique Cornish gifts, or you can stop by the Refill Shop for some environmentally friendly supplies. You’ll also find popular big names from FatFace to Ann’s Cottage, which houses all the top surfing brands.

Walks

With lots of stunning walks in and around Bude, walkers will be spoilt for choice when it comes to scenic routes. Head out onto the South West Coast path for dramatic coastal paths or head inland and explore the many walkways, which take you across crisscrossing fields, through woodland trails and even past Bude’s historic aqueduct.

Dining Out

After a day frolicking in the sea, we often find ourselves in need of a big feed, which is perfect when you’re surrounded by all the great places to eat in Bude. Head to Life’s A Beach for epic food and relaxed vibes or live out your dream of feasting on the water at The Barge! If you’re looking forward to a cosy evening in, then a visit to the Little Pig Farmshop will see you kitted out with everything you could possibly need for an evening of foodie delights.

This is a perfect place to stay, comfortable and a great location for town, beach and places to eat no, need to use the car!

Lovely old property in an excellent position, perfect for exploring the area of Bude without taking the car.

Arch Cottage is a gem. It is on a busy road but traffic noise was no problem. The vicinity couldn’t have been better for a beach holiday during the hottest weather of the year. It was even too hot to sit in the garden. As mentioned in other reviews the cottage was well stocked for all our needs. Another brilliant holiday in Cornwall.

Lovely cottage in a great location for exploring Bude. Has the bonus of off street parking. We just parked up and didn't have to drive for the time we were there. Property has everything you need for a home from home stay. Have booked to stay again!

This cottage is all about location and provides the perfect base for exploring Bude and the north coast of Cornwall. It is a lovely family home which makes for a very comfortable stay in Cornwall.

Third visit to this delightful cottage, ideally situated for town, beach and of course The Brendon Arms. Cottage is well equipped and always exceptionally neat and clean on arrival.

Only minor comment this visit was that no milk was left even though stated on welcome leaflet- tea/coffee/ sugar most welcome, but no milk for first cuppa.

Certainly not enough to put us off as already booked for next year.

Reply from Aspects Holidays

We are so sorry that the housekeeper forgot to leave you the milk. You are quite right in saying that there should be some left for you, and we know how much of a pleasure that first cup of tea or coffee is after a long drive, so we are sorry that this wasn't there on this occasion. We are glad to hear that everything else was fine and that you enjoyed another lovely holiday here though. Tanya, Customer Services

Lovely clean cottage with Parking.Enclosed Garden. Location Fantastic near Shops.Beach and Coastal path. Canal walk is opposite and Great Local Pub for meals. We thoroughly enjoyed our Holiday.

Having stayed here before, it just felt like coming home! It was clean, comfortable and cosy and from the minute we arrived, we were able to relax and enjoy a wonderful week. You will not be disappointed…it’s perfect and so is the location. Whatever the weather, however big your party, this is such a find and you are guaranteed a great holiday.

A really quaint period cottage steeped in history. Beautifully decorated with lots of little nooks and crannies. In a brilliant location with town and the beach just a small stroll away and 2 wonderful places to eat just 3 doors down.

A lovely well equipped cottage in the perfect location for exploring Bude.

Our perfect place, we return every year close to everything you could possibly want!!?

We have stayed at Arch Cottage for 3 years running. It is in a fantastic location for both the beach and walks along the canal. It is beautifully furnished and the beds/bedding are so comfortable/luxurious, well maintained and spotlessly clean. I’m just cross with myself for having missed booking again for 2023!

We had a lovely holiday in Arch cottage and would highly recommend. The location is superb with easy access to both the beach and canal. We were sorry to leave!

Absolutely wonderful stay again. Home from home. Well equipped and comfy. Lovely location close to canal for fishing. Walks on the door step. Weather was kind to us with some superb sunsets up at Compass Point.

The cottage is well maintained and equipped. It is clean and has an excellent location in the centre of Bude with parking for two cars.

Beautiful property, beautiful location!

2nd stay in Arch Cottage, superb location for a lovely, comfortable and well equipped old cottage. Beach and town are a short stroll as is The Brendon Arms (recommended). Next year already booked.

A lovely, comfortable cottage sited within easy reach of Bude canal, the town centre and Bude beaches. The cottage is well furnished and equipped with everything we needed for our 2 week stay. The provision of bird feeders in the garden encouraged many visitors- blue tits, pied wagtails many small brown birds and lucky for us, but just the one visit, a woodpecker. If you want to self cater the kitchen has everything you need for meal preparation- however there is a pub and a hotel within a stone’s throw both do meals. Plenty of takeaways as well. Walks along the canal and river Neet are a joy with something different to see each day.

Beautiful cottage ample parking spotlessly clean beds really comfortable Perfect location you can watch netflix if you subscribe to it I already do so just put my pass word in ! Just a few minutes walk to the sea and a lovely flat canal walk just opposite you can take your pick ! Bude is a lovely place

Perfect cottage, perfect location; an ideal base for seeing the local area and elsewhere in Cornwall. The cottage provided us with everything we needed.

A perfect cottage, close to beach, town and restaurants. Comfortable, warm and well equipped, we love it and return every year.

Very enjoyable stay at Arch Cottage my first time, would definitely consider staying again great location and holiday.

From the moment we walked through the door, you could see and smell how clean the cottage was, instantly making you relax into your holiday. We were a group of four with 2 dogs, there was plenty of room, plenty of utensils, the beds, bedding and towels were all outstanding! The information pack and instructions were helpful. It truly was an amazing find. And location wise… wow! We didn’t use the car all week, we could walk everywhere ??.

Arch cottage is beautiful in a fantastic location very quirky but really lovely. Spotlessly clean and well cared for. Would highly recommend it. Easy access to the beach, canal and town.

Arch Cottage is perfectly placed in Bude close to the beach, canal, shops and other amenities which Bude has to offer. The Falcon and Brendon Arms hotels, serving good quality meals, are almost on the doorstep. The cottage is comfortable, very well equipped and has been tastefully refurbished to a high standard without losing it's character as an old cottage. Aspects Holidays, the agent, are very efficient, helpful and supportive. We would recommend this cottage to anyone planning a holiday in Bude.

Louise and John. September 2021.

You will not be disappointed with this cottage all round it has all what you need from a holiday cottage .

Everything was great, the location was excellent and everywhere was immaculately clean and felt very homely. You don’t need to use the car unless you leave Bude and we would recommend the ice cream kiosk next to the Olive Tree restaurant. The whole cottage had a lovely feel to it and we had the best weather too. The courtyard garden was lovely and shady to sit in of an evening after a hot sunny day on the beach. We have already booked for next year and can’t wait to be back.

This was our second visit within a 9 month period and we have booked again for next year. The cottage is pretty, comfortable, well equipped and a stone’s throw from the canal that leads onto the beach. There is plenty to do in and around Bude, a relaxing and enjoyable holiday. We (and the dog) love it.

Arch cottage is a cosy little cottage in central Bude. It’s location is very convenient and was spotless on arrival. Would not hesitate to recommend.

Arch Cottage is in a great position in Bude with everything you will need to have a lovely time.

Excellent location Beach canal walks and shops and only took car off driveway once to go to main morrissons supermarket Was lovely to have own car park spaces and everything was just perfect Cottage was spotless clean and could not fault anything

Arch cottage is a beautiful cottage so so clean with everything you could possibly need and only a few minutes walk from the beach and canal walks. We were delighted with it and can’t wait for our next holiday there in September.

Spotlessly clean, lovely place and homely. Everything we could need. Close to the canal - so fishing for my husband was just across the road. Close to the sea for me, walks on the doorstep, the town within easy reach. An ideally placed home. Loved it sooo much, we came home and booked another holiday in the cottage for next year.. Looking forward to returning!

Arch Cottage is a really lovely, comfortable place to stay. The location suited us perfectly, very near the beach and within easy walking distance of Bude town centre. Walks beside the canal were perfect for our elderly dog too.

We love Arch Cottage have stayed there for several years, brilliant location close to beach, town, restaurants and has parking which is always a plus. Already booked in for next year!

Arch Cottage is a very pretty and well equipped cottage, very close to Bude centre. Parking is provided. The cottage is very close to the beach, lovely cafes and the town centre. There is no need to travel far (or, indeed, at all) if you don’t want to. It was extremely clean and tidy and the furnishings were all very comfortable (lovely bedding and a comfortable bed). No corners have been cut. I would go again in a heartbeat, Bude is a lovely destination and we were really impressed with the cottage.

First class situation with off road parking. Unfortunately our weather wasn’t brilliant but we did manage good walks each day and with only a short walk to the shops and eateries. We were most impressed with the COVID-19 precautions in the house and throughout Bude as a whole. It’s a pity the rest of the country isn’t so vigilant.

We should have visited in April but managed to re-book for last week. We will no doubt book again.

We thoroghly enjoyed our holiday here. The beds were extremely comfortable, including the singles which in some holiday homes can be a bit hit and miss. Location was excellent for beaches and canals. Overall we all loved this cottage and can recommend it to anyone.

Arch Cottage is a well-equipped, comfortable, clean, home. It has parking for 2 cars and is in an excellent location in the centre of Bude.

Cottage is in a superb location, handy for beach, pub, town and with off road parking. It is very cosy and extremely well equipped with dishwasher, washing machine etc and even Netflix on the tv.

It was spotlessly clean on arrival and we were provided with comprehensive instructions for all the appliances. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was a good size with an excellent shower. Even the oven/hob instruction cards provided by the owner were written with a sense of humour and made us smile.

We would thoroughly recommend Arch Cottage and will certainly book it again as we have holidayed many times in Bude and will return.

Alan & Marcia Rich (Derby) September 2020

Cottage is quirky but well equipped and well located. We had a fantastic family holiday in Bude and would stay again if we were to go to Bude again. 10 mins walk to town or beach. Lovely pub a few doors up from cottage.

Highly recommend, beautiful place and everything you need cosy comfy, home from home literally. Cannot wait to stay again.

We enjoyed our holiday at Arch cottage. Great location. Everything was clean and tidy. This was our second visit.

Arch cottage is perfect for location and comfort, we have been coming for several years which is the best recommendation I can give, booked for next year already.

The cottage was in a really good location. It was great being so close to the canal and within walking distance to the town. It was also good having the pub so close by.

Arch Cottage is wonderful - extremely comfortable, and really good value for money. Next door but one to a very good pub and very close to town without being too close. I thoroughly recommend it to you.

Excellent location, cosy. clean and comfy, all facilities within easy walking distance, beach, canal, shops, pubs, restaurants. parking for at least two vehicles. private sunny courtyard with garden furniture. Would definitely reccomend and hope to return.

Perfect cottage, within walking distance of all Bude has to offer, especially the beach! Would recommend to anyone.

Arch cottage is lovely, we stayed as a family of 4 with 2 teenagers. Everything you could need was provided, the cottage was well equipped, there is a parking space and it is so close to everything in Bude, 10 minutes max walk to the beach and town, I would recommend it to anyone.

This is a fabulous cottage with everything that you need for a great 'home from home' holiday. The garden to the rear of the property is quite the sun trap and a gorgeous place to relax.

There were only 2 of us in the cottage so there was plenty of room but I would have no hesitation in booking for 4 people as the cottage is pretty spacious. The bedrooms are really comfortable, light and airy and there is masses of storage space. We absolutely loved the location and there is so much to do quite literally from the doorstep - no need for the car really. A little gem in a lovely little town.

Very welcoming and immaculate property. Did not need to use the car all week due to close proximity to canal, beach and town. Really appreciated use of wetsuits and bodyboards in outhouse.

A very comfortable and well situated property with good outside space

Loved our stay in Bude. Possibly the friendliest Cornish resort we've visited. So many dog friendly cafe, shops, walks and people!! Arch cottage was a quirky home from home and we enjoyed our stay there, sad to leave the area.

Arch cottage is located centrally in Bude right next to the canal and was a perfect starting point for walks and tours. Very good restaurants directly in the neighborhood. And when we had a very rainy day it offered a cozy retreat. The little garden behind the cottage is also useful.

Arch cottage is in a very good location, close to Summerleaze beach and canal. The property is a little quirky in character , but clean and comfortable with all equipment that one would expect , bedrooms are very comfortable . Dog owners should note that there is not enclosed access to the rear courtyard garden. Easy parking space for 2 cars and my family appreciated the kind invitation to use the wet suits and boards in the garden shed.

Beautiful holiday home, great location, very clean, fully equipped even use of beach equipment, great sun trap garden. 5 min walk to town, canal, restaurants and beach. You could spend a week without using the car. Especially liked the Deck for evening meals wonderful service and very friendly, food amazing. gate lock tea rooms on the quay for breakfast and cakes Yum, walking the Canal in the evening and watching the Herons feed. And the hundreds of birds that come back at night to their nests in the trees behind the cottage truly spectacular,

Fantastic home from home, had everything you could want or need and spotlessly clean. Loved watching the birds at the feeder in the back garden. Very well situated for local amenities and the beach and canal.

Our family of five had a very enjoyable and cosy holiday in Arch cottage. It was quiet , clean and well presented. Being centrally located and only a short walk from the beach meant that we were out for a lot of the time enjoying the fabulous views , fresh air and messing about on the water. A highly recommendable place to stay.

Great location, close to canal and access into town and to the beaches and coastal walks. The Cottage is very well equipped and spotlessly clean. 3 good size bedrooms, a kitchen diner and comfy lounge. Some good pubs and eating establishments within easy walking distance. Very helpful Visitor Information centre just across the road and a local Aspects office close at hand.

Bude really does take some beating!!
