Eden Project

No trip to Charlestown - or Cornwall, for that matter - is complete without a visit to the world’s largest indoor rainforest and famous ecological landmark. 

Situated just a few miles from St Austell, the Rainforest and Mediterranean Biomes contain thousands of different varieties of plant life from across the globe along with a canopy walkway, waterfall, exhibits and sculptures; while a stunning selection of outdoor gardens are also scattered throughout the complex.

And with soft play areas, food and drink, climbing frames, and the country’s longest zip wire alongside innovative exhibitions and an ever-changing events schedule, it’s a must-see for a number of stellar reasons.

The Lost Gardens of Heligan

Located in Pentewan less than five miles from Charlestown, The Lost Gardens of Heligan are a bloom-filled spectacle to behold. 

Spread across 200 acres of dog-friendly gardens and estate, visitors can roam woodland, farmland, jungle, productive gardens and pleasure grounds complete with historic paintings and National Collection of Camellias and Rhododendrons for a day out with an incredible back-to-nature difference.

Kids will also be kept entertained with farm animals in The Barn, seasonal walking trails and events, and inspired features such as The Hide, The Insect Hotel and The Coin Log.

St Austell Brewery

Less than two miles from Charlestown sits St Austell Brewery which, whether you’re an ale fan or simply fancy exploring the attraction to discover more about the 150 year history of its production, the museum, bar and tours will provide an entertaining and interactive interlude to your stay.

Tuck into a pub meal at the Hick’s Bar, browse the beer, lager and wine selection in the shop, and join in The Brewing Experience for tasters and insights into the fascinating production process. 

Porthpean Beach and Carlyon Bay

Whether it’s summer or winter, a stint at the beach is a definite to-do on the list for anyone holidaying in Charlestown, and the stunning selection in and around the area ensures everyone from sand-loving landlubbers to water sports enthusiasts will relish some coastal downtime.

A short stroll west will take you to the beautiful and family-friendly Porthpean, the perfect place to soak up the sunshine or swim, windsurf and sail during the warmer months – or have a beach clean or walk in winter.

The long two-mile stretch of Carlyon Bay fuses a trio of sandy beaches in St Austell Bay, giving plenty of room for couples and families alike. Whether extending your walk off the South West Coast Path or relishing some seaside fun during the summer, it’s another gem to seek out during your stay. Charlestown also has its own small sandy beach, which is perfect for sun bathing and paddling.

Wheal Martyn

About three miles from Charlestown is Cornwall’s brilliant china clay mining heritage attraction. Home to historical exhibits, nature trails and a host of children-friendly activities, play areas and features, it cleverly combines indoor attraction with outdoor adventure to ensure all seasons and visitor are catered for.
