A beautiful hideaway with gracious hosts. Weather wasn't the best so to have a luxury place to stay was what we needed after a day's walk. Thank you very much.

February 2024

Booked The Fern for a week away for my partners 50th birthday in November. The week went by so quickly, we had a brilliant time. Having both been to Cornwall and Devon area many, many times we just wanted some peace and quiet from the every day 'rat race', which The fern was an ideal base for us to explore, on rainy days we enjoyed the quiet of the country side. The Fern has everything you need from a washing machine to a tassimo coffee machine. The bed in the master bedroom was very comfy, the copper bath wow! We didn't use the hot tub as the weather wasn't in our favour it being November but was filled and ready if we did want to use it. The welcome pack left for us included, drinks, tea, coffee, sugar, milk, scones, jam, clotted cream, crisps and cookies, thankyou so much. With supermarkets a few miles away we didn't need to rush out that evening for snacks. If you are looking for a quiet relaxing week away we would highly recommend The Fern as a base. Bude town and beautiful beach a short drive away too. We did sample food at the Deck one evening, we would recommend there for an evening meal. It was lovely to meet Jo the owner while we were there, a huge thakyou for the gift that was left for my partner on his birthday. We hope to be back next year.

Holidays in Bude

Carrying the title of Cornwall’s northern-most coastal town, Bude is perfectly placed to enjoy some of the north coast’s beautiful beaches and coastal walks.

Bude has so much to offer when it comes to things to do, including a fabulous town with a wide selection of independent shops, cafés, and restaurants – not to mention the wildest live music venue in Cornwall. In addition, visitors can meander along Bude Canal, stretch out on one of the many beaches, or enjoy a gentle cruise in a pedal boat or kayak, observing the beautiful area from a different angle. The town is home to the historic Bude Sea Pool and The Castle Bude, both a must if you are in the area.

For those who enjoy walking, the South West Coast Path can be easily accessed from Bude. You’ll be blown away by the stunning scenery and breathtaking views along the coastline – it’s also a great dog-friendly day out!

With so much on the doorstep, it’s the perfect destination for a holiday by the sea!

Top tip

Take a dip in the historic Bude Sea Pool at Summerleaze Beach!

Beaches in Bude

Each with its own character and charm, the beaches in Bude are great whether you’re a swimmer, surfer or sand-snoozer.

Summerleaze Beach – Boasting the iconic sea pool, and only a five-minute walk from the centre of Bude, Summerleaze Beach is Bude’s central hub of sand, surf, and sun. Clean, safe, and easy on the eye, Summerleaze Beach is a big hit with surfers, sun-bathers, and families. However, it’s the sheer variety of activities that mark Summerleaze as arguably one of the best beaches in Cornwall for outdoor pursuits and watersports so definitely swing by if you love a hands-on holiday.

Crooklets Beach – At low tide, you’ll find a huge expanse of golden sand along with lots of rockpools to explore, making it very popular with families. There’s also decent surf and lots of amenities nearby including a beach café for those all-important ice creams and even a skate park.

Widemouth Bay Beach – Stretching across one and a half miles of golden sands, Widemouth Bay is divided into two halves, the North beach and the South beach, separated by a natural barrier of rock known as Black Rock. As the tide retreats, amazing rock formations are exposed - perfect for rockpooling and getting back to nature!

Northcott Mouth Beach – Three miles North of Bude is the small rocky beach Northcott Mouth, which is owned by the National Trust. As the tide drops, the beach opens up to expansive sand with rockpools dotted all around - perfect for exploring with the dog all year round.

Bude Castle

Ordinarily, a castle built on the sand might not seem like the best idea, but Bude Castle has really stood the test of time! Built around 1830, the castle was formally the home of Victorian inventor Sir Goldsworthy Gurney. It’s now a heritage centre with lots of fascinating exhibitions and art galleries, making this impressive feat of architecture an interesting day whatever the weather.

Why explore the beautiful surrounding area of Bude on four wheels when you can head out on two! There’s a great selection of bikes available for hire around Bude, which suit all ages and most abilities – saddle up!

Bude Sea Pool

Opened in 1930, this partially man-made tidal swimming pool in the rocks of Summerleaze beach provides a lovely, safe place to swim, perfect if you’re not ready to swim in the sea. The pool is open all year round, but of course, it depends on the tide and weather, so always check before heading out.

Surfing & Watersports

Based near Summerleaze beach, Bude Surfing Experience provides water sports equipment hire and watersports lessons so you can hit the waves running as you try your hand at surfing and stand-up paddleboarding!

Alternatively, Freewave Surf Academy at Widemouth Bay offers surfing, coasteering and SUP lessons, while Big Blue Surf School offers a range of surfing lessons, from complete beginners to advanced.

Shopping

There is a range of lovely shops in Bude where you can stock up on all the usual holiday essentials. Head to Banford’s Bude, Jemima Rainbow, or Wildwood Cornwall for unique Cornish gifts, or you can stop by the Refill Shop for some environmentally friendly supplies. You’ll also find popular big names from FatFace to Ann’s Cottage, which houses all the top surfing brands.

Walks

With lots of stunning walks in and around Bude, walkers will be spoilt for choice when it comes to scenic routes. Head out onto the South West Coast path for dramatic coastal paths or head inland and explore the many walkways, which take you across crisscrossing fields, through woodland trails and even past Bude’s historic aqueduct.

Dining Out

After a day frolicking in the sea, we often find ourselves in need of a big feed, which is perfect when you’re surrounded by all the great places to eat in Bude. Head to Life’s A Beach for epic food and relaxed vibes or live out your dream of feasting on the water at The Barge! If you’re looking forward to a cosy evening in, then a visit to the Little Pig Farmshop will see you kitted out with everything you could possibly need for an evening of foodie delights.

Lovely house with the most stunning views. Very spacious house and actually quite nice to have the owners living above. Only downside for me was having two dogs I would have liked a safe area that’s fenced off for my dogs to play in. But there is an enormous garden that’s open plan. We did have a blip with the washing machine but it was sorted the same day so amazing service. Thank you David & Jo and family for sharing your beautiful house with us.

Reply from Aspects Holidays

We must agree, The Fern is a perfect retreat! We are so pleased to hear that you enjoyed the property and having the owners nearby. Thank you for your suggestion of a fenced off area in the garden, we will forward your comments to the owners for them to consider as a future improvement. Thanks again for your feedback, and we hope to see you back here soon. Lucy, Customer Services

Thank you for the welcome delicious scones on arrival. Nice secluded and peaceful location to explore from, and a clean and well equipped property. Very friendly hosts. Nice addition of pool table - came in very handy during inclement weather Lovely jacuzzi

Greeted with a very warm welcome. We had a wonderful stay and could have just stayed in the property all week and still have had a wonderful time.

The Fern is a fantastic property...a home from home and so much more

Really well equipped to a high standard and property is very spacious with amazing views

The owners made our dog feel very welcome with a welcome crate with blankets, dog bowls and toys to play with (really nice touch)

We met the owners a couple of times, really friendly and happy to answer questions/give suggestions on what to do in the area

We would highly recommend this property and look forward to staying here again in the future.

The Fern is an absolutely gorgeous place. A proper home away from home. Everything was nice and clean and well equipped. The land and house itself felt so fancy. The views were also so very gorgeous!!

They were so very welcoming of our dog and left a little goody basket and crate out for him too.

We saw the owners a couple of times and they were so lovely and welcoming, and very helpful with our questions.

We truly cannot wait to visit again next year! Thank you so much.

I have been booking with Aspect holidays for years and The Fern was by far one of my best yet stays! It was literally a breath of fresh air staying here. We never stay the same place twice but this one is exceptional...didn't even want to leave....Everything was perfect!

Perfect location to see both North Devon, and Cornwall. The property is incredibly spacious, and comfortable. The hosts were so kind and helpful. Would definitely go again.

A superb and highly recommended holiday home with a real wow factor. Fantastic living space and a pool table to enjoy plus a hot tub. Bedrooms are nicely appointed. A great base for exploring the surrounding area. Have booked again for 2023!

Excellent holiday home about 15 minutes from Bude. It is clear that the owners have gone too much effort and expense to ensure an excellent stay in the area. The Hot Tub was a joy.

Would highly recommend the Falcon Hotel for Sunday Lunch and also The Barge on the waterfront as well as the Old Wainhouse Inn.

On the contrary to this, avoid The Deck Brasserie at all costs, who managed to serve up, without doubt, the most inedible meal we have ever tasted.

Absolutely loved it, clean, well equipped, luxury accommodation. We were two single ladies and a dog and this was perfect for us and Albie the cocker-poo. The hot tub was an unexpected bonus that we took advantage of and the view down to Bude and the sea from the hot tub was fantastic (and we were lucky to have good weather). The welcome cream tea was a lovely surprise and very much appreciated after a long journey, I would definitely come back here if visiting North Cornwall again.

A lovely place to stay with helpful hosts. We enjoyed a great week and were extremely comfortable, would definitely recommend.

Perfect property, the welcome cream tea was amazing, furnished to a very good standard and the view across the hills is really spectacular and very relaxing after a busy day. The owners made our first holiday with our puppy very comfortable and we felt perfectly at home.

I’m reluctant to write a good review because it’ll mean more people will book The Fern, reducing our chances of getting another week next year! Everything about the place was superb; usually when you see the photos on a website they over-sell but not here. The accommodation was modern, spotless, and larger than we anticipated. The beds were comfy, and the quirky bath in the bedroom was a lovely touch. The view is stunning and the garden was spacious with loads of room for our children to play. The ‘hobbit’ area for the BBQ and outdoor rattan chairs was an unexpected pleasant addition. The owners, Dave and Jo were friendly and helpful. The sight of the fresh scones on arrival were very much welcomed!

The location suited us; less than 15min from Bude, half hour to Tintagel and just under an hour to Padstow. To top it off, we had fantastic weather. Thoroughly recommended… reluctantly!

We visited as a family of 4 (children aged 19 and 15). The accommodation was fabulous, very clean, modern and plenty of space for everyone to have a bit of time to themselves. The Fern is well equppied, has a selection of board games and books and we enjoyed many games of pool. We met Jo and Dave, the owners, who are lovely. The welcome tray and scones we're perfect for a nice cup of tea after our journey and the Easter egg and marshmallows were a lovely treat. Our dog was also very well catered for.

The Spar in Whitsone is brilliant and has pretty much everything you would need.

The location is perfect for exploring North Cornwall and the views are wonderful. We can highly recommend The Fern and hope to visit again soon.

Had a fabulous week at The Fern made better my great weather for March. The accommodation was clean, spacious and very comfortable with everything you need for a relaxing stay. The pool table was a good addition. The views are fantastic and it is set in a lovely location which was ideal for exploring North Cornwall. Would recommend.

A long weekend quite simply isn't enough, book a whole week!

The Fern is a beautiful new build development with LOADS of space and a well equipped kitchen. Set back off the road, it looks out across the countryside - beautiful. The owners live directly above in the same development and are really friendly - we met Dave and his son and daughter when we stayed and they made us feel really welcome. We really appreciated the welcome pack on arrival too which included scones, cream, jam, juice, tea and coffee and fresh milk.

Both bedrooms are spacious and en-suite. The copper bath was wonderful and the addition of the pool table was a great idea too for those rainy days.

Less than 10 mins drive or so to the beach, a local spa just down the road with everything you could need, we had such a great stay and can't wait to go back....for a whole week next time.

Our stay at the Fern was perfect. We came as 2 couples and loved the amount of space and felt very comfortable here. We had fun playing pool and found everything we needed in the kitchen. Also appreciated the recycling system. The place is spacious, well decorated and was festively decorated for Christmas! It was about a 20 minute drive to the sea, shops and restaurants, but it was lovely being in a peaceful location. A great place to come home to after a swim or a surf and we had enough to entertain ourselves with at the house. I would definitely recommend.

An amazing house, very comfortable lovely and warm. The kitchen was equipped with everything you could possibly need. The views over to the sea are beautiful. A fabulous coast line to walk along. The owners were very helpful and friendly giving us ideas of where to visit that they had enjoyed. We have already booked again for 2022.

Lovely home from home, plenty of space with lovely views. Spotlessly clean and cosy. The welcome tray was much appreciated with Halloween treats and scones! With two teenagers it was useful to have two shower rooms and their own tv in the bedroom. my son loved the pool table and got quite good at it by the end of the week!

The Fern was a little difficult to find at first due to the narrow lanes but the views obtained from being so isolated were incredibly. Highly recommend to all my family and friends, brilliant for what I wanted from my holiday.

Beautiful property, with amazing views. Clean, well finished and had everything we needed for a lovely stay. We didn’t use the master bedroom as it didn’t have a window, but second bedroom was lovely and comfortable. Very quiet, a really beautiful retreat and large area to walk the dogs. Just be aware that the garden isn’t fenced in and merges into a field so we kept our dogs on a lead. I would recommend and would visit again.

This is a A++ accommodation. It exceeded all my families expectations, from the welcome pack for us (Scones cream and Jam, fresh bottle of milk, crisps and more) and the welcome pack for my dog (treats, poo bags, dog towel, toy and water and feeding Bowles). Everywhere was spotlessly clean and very well sized, bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchen dining and lounge area. The weather wasn't great which made the utility room very handy, washing clothes in the washing machine after a muddy day out walking. Everything was modern, brand new and there wasn't a kitchen utensil you went wanting for, you wanted for nothing. The view from the lounge area and well furnished patio was absolutely stunning, it led out on to a huge garden area that my dog adored. The owners of The Ferns are perfect hosts, there when you need them and always happy to help in what ever way they can. I will not hesitate to stay here again and recommend it to all family and friends.

We had a lovely week staying at The Fern. The view from the property was amazing. We thoroughly enjoyed the very spacious feel of the property and the tasteful decor and furnishings. The kitchen was very well equipped and we had fun playing Pool.

This is a great house for a family! Clean and spacious and has everything you need on site. Great country views!

Absolutely fabulous stay, so peaceful xx

We loved our week at the Fern. The accommodation was very equipped, clean and comfortable and had stunning views across the countryside. Would definitely recommend as a base for exploring North Cornwall.
