Holidays in Widemouth Bay

Widemouth Bay is a beautiful beach, just three miles from the town of Bude. With one and a half miles of golden sand, it’s the perfect place for a relaxing holiday within easy reach of the facilities at Bude.

Situated on the North coast, Widemouth Bay is an open, exposed stretch of coast, ideal for surfers. Equally enjoyed by families, children can explore the rock pools exposed at low tide. With beach cafes, parking and seasonal lifeguards, it’s the perfect day out.

Though Widemouth Bay appears to be one large beach, it’s divided into two beaches. Blackrock, the south end, is privately owned and is dog-friendly all year, perfect if your pooch is joining you on holiday.

Did you know...

Widemouth Bay is the landing point for communications cables linking the UK to other countries?

Widemouth Bay Beach

Of course, the best part of Widemouth Bay is Widemouth Bay Beach - 1.5 miles of glorious sand.

Though it appears to be one large expanse of sand, the beach is actually divided into two sections: the North Beach and the South Beach (also known as Black Rock). This division comes in the form of a barrier of natural rocks - the largest being the landmark known as Black Rock. At low tide, hundreds of rock pools are exposed - perfect to keep the children (and adults) entertained.

Ample parking is available at Widemouth Bay, but if you don't fancy getting your toes sandy, you can park at one of the free viewing areas!

There is a seasonal dog ban on this beach from the 15th May to the 30th September between 10am and 6pm. Outside these hours and from 1st October to 14th May dogs are allowed.

Things to do in Widemouth Bay

If you fancy a change from rock-pooling and making sand castles on the beach, you might like to try surfing. Don't worry if you're a beginner you can take surfing lessons with Freewave Surf Academy or OA Surf Club

There are lots of lovely walks in and around Widemouth Bay. You could try walking to Bude, via Philips Point Nature Reserve, over Efford Down, to the watch tower at Compass Point and then follow the canal into Bude.

Places to eat in Widemouth Bay

There are several eateries in and around Widemouth Bay.

Firstly, The Bay View Inn provides a selection of seasonal classics and food with a twist. They have three separate indoor dining areas, several alfresco dining areas and spaces available for private hire. In peak season, they open a snack shack, serving a variety of take away foods.

Close to the beach, you'll find Black Rock Cafe and Bistro, serving freshly-cooked artisan food. You can enjoy your food inside, or on the deck soaking up the views.

With direct access to the beach, Widemouth Bay Cafe serves all day breakfast, fish and chips, burgers, cream teas and other light snacks.

Slightly outside of Widemouth Bay, Elements Cafe Bar and Restaurant serves a selection of food, specialising in pizza and pasta. The restaurant has beautiful views to enjoy while you dine.

Olive Tree is in a beautiful setting with countryside views and close to the beach. The property was comfortable and spacious which enabled us to relax after we had been out and about in the day. Would definitely stay here again!

Lovely barn conversion with stunning countryside views. Accommodation was very comfortable and we enjoyed the large open plan living downstairs. Sheltered rear courtyard garden was very nice with the option of also a picnic area outside the front of the property. We sometimes walked to the beach through fields which would take 20 minutes or so but longer coming back as uphill! Or we would drive the 2 minute journey to the beach car park. A small negative with the property is that the under counter fridge has a very small freezer compartment and although there was a counter top freezer it wasn't big enough for our needs. A Lidl and Morrisons was a 10 minute drive away for supplies, so not too far to restock. We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday at Olive Tree and would recommend it.

A very well appointed and comfortable accommodation with views overlooking the Cornish countryside. Ian and Carolyn (the owners) were very friendly and welcoming.... nothing was too much trouble. Would highly recommend Olive Tree Cottage for a family holiday.

Just wonderful, very quiet if you are wanting a relaxing break. Lovely host and a great place to stay.

Excellent peaceful location. Friendly owners well maintained property with good equipment. Really enjoyed our stay will recommend particularly for families with kids of all sizes
Better internet would be great.

We enjoyed our break at the Olive tree, it was in a nice peaceful location situated on the top of a hill, about 5-10 mins walk from the beach and what local pubs/cafes there were. It was clean and well presented and care had been given to complying with Covid-19 cleaning requirements.

The property could do with being a bit better equipped in the kitchen, in particular the small size of the fridge was an issue. WIFI was shared with other properties in the complex and rarely worked well.

Really enjoyed the outdoor space, this was shared with the other properties but we rarely saw anyone else using this area. Nice to have somewhere to chill out in the sunshine after a long day of hiking.

Reply from Aspects Holidays

We are glad that you enjoyed it here. The location is lovely, isn't it? You really get the best of both worlds, a rural experience, but still within easy reach of shops, cafes, pubs, beaches and so on. With the rural location and given that the Wi-Fi is currently shared between 3 properties, it will be slower than what you are probably used to and will not be suitable for gaming, downloading, and streaming. This may not be suitable for the needs of some, but for many, it adds to the 'getting away from it all' experience and gives you time to truly relax and enjoy the surroundings. The fridge is a standard undercounter size which we try to show on the website photos, so we do hope that was what you had expected. It certainly sounds like you still had a fantastic time and made the most of being in and exploring such a beautiful area. Tanya, Customer Services
