Holidays in Helston

The bustling market town of Helston lies between Falmouth and Penzance with the Lizard Peninsula to the south. Holidays in Helston are ideal for exploring the South West and South East of Cornwall, and there’s plenty to do for visitors of all ages. Meander through the town and see a mixture of Georgian and Victorian architecture, with one outstanding feature being The Monument at the end of Coinagehall Street, built in 1834.

Helston provides the perfect base to explore the different areas of Cornwall. With coastal towns such as St Ives, Falmouth, Penzance, and Porthleven all within easy reach, you’ll be able to experience much of what Cornwall has to offer while staying in Helston. It’s also referred to as the 'gateway to the Lizard'; a truly stunning area of Cornwall offering scenery unlike anywhere else. With the Lizard Peninsula on the doorstep, walkers, bird watchers and those looking to escape the crowds will be in paradise in this National Landscape (formerly Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty).

Did you know...

Helston Flora Day, a traditional event with dancing and celebrations, is held on May 8th every year?

Things to do in Helston

While self catering in Helston, why not visit the Blue Anchor Inn, a thatched building, originally a monks’ rest house which became a tavern in the 15th century. Miners once received their wages in the pub, which is possibly the oldest private brewery in the country! They currently produce 4 different ‘Spingo’ ales brewed using traditional recipes from the on-site micro-brewery.

As you head out of Helston, you can relax at the Coronation Park and try your hand at rowing or simply feed the ducks at the Boating Lake. Head towards the fishing village of Porthleven (just two miles away) and you’ll come to the Penrose Estate offering beautiful woodland walks. Here, you can relax on the banks of the largest freshwater lake in Cornwall, Loe Pool, separated from the sea by the infamous long sand bar.

The Cornish Seal Sanctuary in nearby Gweek is a great day out for the whole family. Here you will find rescued seals and sea lions from Britain’s beaches, along with other animals such as penguins and otters on show.

Flambards theme park is also close by, which provides a fail safe way of keeping the kids entertained. With a selection of rides and exhibitions, there's plenty on offer that the whole family can enjoy.

Famous Flora Day

Helston’s greatest claim to fame is the famous Flora Day. This is held every year on May 8th unless it falls on a Sunday or Monday when it is held on the Saturday before. The town is decorated by bluebells, gorse, laurel leaves and colourful flags and dancing begins at 7am. Don’t miss the mummer’s play at 8.30 known as the Hal-an-Tow at several venues in the town. Watch St George and St Michael slay the Dragon and the Devil, cheered on by a crowd dressed in Lincoln green and Elizabethan robes. Enjoy a self catering holiday in Helston and you’ll be in for a true Cornish experience!

Thank you

It’s our second stay at the Cowshed and it won’t be our last. We have stayed in many of the Aspects’ properties but this is by far our favourite. A beautiful quiet location but close enough to get to St Ives and other tourist destinations. We would like to say it was terrible so no one else would book and we could stay there all year!

Just spent an enjoyable week, the cottage has all you could need. Very comfy

This was our second stay at The Cowshed and we are already planning to return. The cottage is beautiful, with high class furnishings and in a gorgeous, tranquil location. It is approximately 20 minutes drive to a number of beaches and to and St Michael’s Mount, and St Ives is around 30 minutes drive. I highly recommend this lovely property.

Warm, cosy home in a peaceful location. Lovely garden with views of the grazing horses, rabbits and foxes. Welcome pack of tea, coffee, milk, cream and scones.

Beautiful spot/surroundings in the country, lovely, quiet & comfy, home from home.

Really welcoming goodies after a long journey. Lovely to be back again, home from home. Lots of lovely beach walking with the dogs. The weather was challenging but it didn’t spoil the holiday.

We had a lovely week in The Cowshed. A very warm and welcoming property which has been tastefully decorated. A really comfortable bed with luxurious bedding. We enjoyed looking out at the horses from the conservatory and enjoying the peace and quiet. Thank you for the delicious cream tea - a very thoughtful touch.

We were in Cornwall in August 2022 and our holidays were fantastic. Beside the beautiful and amazing landscape of Cornwall we enjoyed our stay at "The Cowshed" very much. It was like coming home every day, totally cozy, quiet, a winter garden we could use when it was raining, but we could enjoy the view outside nevertheless - and we had a large garden with the option to make our own barbecue. It was in the middle of a farm, but beside us there were only 5 horses and we enjoyed the time with them as well. You can completely relax in this great cottage. So we would recommend everyone to have holidays in Cornwall, more than beautiful, and if you choose to stay in "The Cowshed" - congratulations, well done :-) Anja & Andreas from Germany

We were delighted with our holiday home. The setting is very pretty and peaceful. You do have to turn down a little track, but you soon get used to it, even with a large car, and the entrance to the farm is beautiful. Our children were thrilled to see the ponies each day, as well as the rabbits and fox in the field.

The property was well equipped and tastefully decorated. The photos give an accurate portrayal of the property, although I would say it’s probably even better in reality. There were thoughtful touches like enough dishwasher and washing machine tablets, cloths, loo roll etc. to get you started, plus milk in the fridge and a lovely cream tea waiting for us. Towels are fluffy and soft, and tea towels and dish cloths were provided so you just need to bring beach towels.

It’s conveniently located to see the sights of West Cornwall and Helston is around 5 minutes down the road with a Lidl as you drive in from the house and a large Sainsbury’s on the other side, plus lots of local shops in town. I’d recommend going out to eat in Porthleven harbour, which is only around 10 minutes away. It was a perfect base to come home to and a lovely setting to relax inside and outside once the kids had gone to bed. Thank you for a wonderful holiday home.

Accommodation unclean we spent time making it acceptable! The next guests should have found it cleaner which always adds to a lovely holiday! No shade outside to enjoy the lovely setting and tranquility

Thank you very much for your review. We are very sorry if you arrived to the property and were disappointed in the standards of cleanliness and also sorry that we had not had the opportunity to rectify this for you at the time of your stay. We would always expect for guests to arrive and find everything to be perfect, but if it isn't, we would always do everything possible to put that right for you straight away so that you could get the most out of your time here. Since receiving your feedback about the outside area, the property owners have updated the outside furniture which now includes a parasol, so that those looking to enjoy the outside area from a spot of shade will be able to do so. Thanks again for your feedback, we hope to see you again soon. Ben, Customer Services.

Lovely location and the perfect place to relax and would highly recommend.

Lovely, comfortable and clean property. Great location for visiting beaches and beauty spots, including Godrevy, St Ives, Praa Sands, Mousehole, Penrose Estate, Porthleven and Marazion. Food at the nearby Victoria Inn is superb. Dogs loved it too!

The Cowshed is a beautiful holiday home set in a very peaceful and private location. We had a brilliant time, both at the cottage and exploring South Cornwall.

The Cowshed accommodation is exceptional, comfortable, great location, everything you could possibly need and I hope to return.

Thank you for an amazing, enjoyable stay.

Enjoyed our stay, cottage was overall pleasant. Cream tea on arrival was a nice touch. However we there were a few negatives...... Double bed was very uncomfortable, mattress felt poor quality and/or very old and unsupportive. Single mattresses were much better.

BBQ was filthy, had not been cleaned or emptied for some time it appeared and so smelled quite badly too.... there was nothing available to clean it leaving us unable to use the BBQ which was an issue as we are a family who loves BBQs. We tried to use disposable ones but that's not the same as a real charcoal BBQ and so we struggled. Also quite a few cobwebs around ceilings, I know these can appear very quickly especially as the Cowshed is rural but they were there when we arrived. A little more attention to detail required.

Reply from Aspects Holidays

We were sorry to hear that you did not find the double bed comfortable. It can be very difficult to find mattresses that will suit every guest's preference, with this being very much to personal taste. This isn't something that has been raised before, but we will monitor further feedback for now. We were also sorry to hear about the BBQ. The owners have since purchased a new one and whilst it should be cleaned out by guests after used, they have requested that their housekeeper checks it each week. Their housekeeper has also been asked to double check for cobwebs at high level, which it seems were missed that week. That certainly is very unusual for her, and we are sorry for the oversight. We had a fantastic week at the cowshed. The property was in an amazing location with horses for neighbours. The property was clean and bright and airy and felt very homely. There was everything we needed for a very co For table break. Outside area was lovely and my 2 boys (12 & 9) spent many hours in the evening enjoying and we enjoyed the quietness. Would definitely recommend the cowshed and will definitely be coming back.

We loved our stay at The Cowshed; it was spotlessly clean, beautifully furnished and in a convenient position to access both coasts, etc. We have already booked for next year!

A lovely week, weather was perfect. Cottage very well equipped , spotlessly clean and comfortable. Good location for exploring Lands End and The Lizard

Another relaxing stay at the Cowshed and two bookings for next year made.

We enjoyed our week in the Cow Shed. It was extremely comfortable with everything you need to hand. Spotlessly clean and very welcoming, inside and out. Location was perfect for us. Lovely quiet countryside off the beaten track, yet very close to everything that makes south west Cornwall such a wonderful place to visit.

The Cowshed is a lovely property, a real home from home. A perfect spot to escape and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the Cornish countryside.

We had a lovely week at the Cowshed. The cottage itself is lovely and cosy and the location is so peaceful and quiet. We had breakfast most days in the conservatory looking out over the field with the ponies in it. We visited the Lizard,Kayance cove,Praa sands but the best thing we did was going to Godrevy point and saw the seals down on the beach,if you plan to do this check out the tide times as they are only on the beach at low tide. We have been so impressed with Aspects customer service and are now looking where we can go next year in Cornwall with them.

Lovely comfortable property in great location. Plenty of places to visit nearby. Very nice garden with the bonus of the gorgeous ponies in the field adjacent. Thanks to their owner we had a lovely Sunday lunch at Trevaskis Farm . Would definitely recommend

We've just returned from a fabulous week at The Cowshed, it was exactly as described and we were delighted with the property - we have already recommended it to friends. The cream tea laid out for us on arrival was a very welcome sight.

Our little dog particularly liked laying in the open conservatory doorway.

The location is perfect and we had a busy week visiting Cape Cornwall, the Minnack Theatre, The Lizard, St Ives, Porthleven etc. We were very lucky with the weather.

We have just returned from a wonderful week away at The Cowshed. Absolutely beautiful property in a good location to be able to access various points of interest across Cornwall (albeit via a car as there is not much within walking distance but this suited us). Beautiful garden to sit out in and watch the horses that live on the property's land and kids loved feeding them a carrot or two with permission of the owner. Would definitely recommend and return in the future.

We have just returned from a relaxing week staying in this beautiful cottage. It is ideally situated for the south coast and not too far from the north. It’s surroundings are quiet and weather permitting, it has a lovely garden to relax in with comfy seating and a bbq, which we made the most of. The horses in the field at the end of the garden were an added bonus.

We couldn’t fault the accommodation which has everything you need for a great holiday.

This property is beautiful with a stunning outlook onto fields which are occupied by horses and rabbits. Our 4 year old loved playing in the garden and talking to the horses.

It's in a great location for visiting lots of places as it's not too far from the A394 & A30 but it's in the middle of the countryside so is really quiet.

The property is well equipped and the beds and sofas were really comfy.

The only issue we had was finding the property to start with as the directions were a bit misleading but once we knew where it was it was fine! Basically when you get to the top of the hill turn left straight away - don't follow the road round to the right.

We loved out time here and will definitely be coming back as soon as we can!

Thanks for your lovely feedback; it sounds like you all had a great time and made the most of the brilliant location. We have since amended the directions to hopefully avoid any further confusion. Thanks for letting us know and we hope to see you back here again soon. Tanya, Customer Services

We had a lovely week. The cottage was cosy, well equipped and in a great location. Our dogs loved the local walks and beaches. We didn’t want to leave and would certainly recommend the cottage to others!

The Cowshed is a lovely property, hidden away and very comfortable. The location is excellent and you are not too far away from beaches, shops and scenic walks. The property is finished to an excellent standard and the owners have paid attention to every detail.
