Holidays in Portreath

A perfect retreat all year round, self catering holidays in Portreath offer beautiful coastal walks along the spectacular cliffs towards St Ives Bay passing Deadman’s Cove, Ralph’s Cupboard and Hell’s Mouth, all bearing testament to tales of shipwrecks and smuggling.

Located just 5 miles North of Redruth, Portreath (meaning sandy cove) is a great place to explore the stunning scenery of the North Cornwall coastline. This part of Cornwall is renowned for its beautiful walks, and Portreath is no different. Walk east to Porthtowan or West to Basset’s Cove; either way you’ll be treated to gorgeous views.

With excellent road links, you can easily reach Truro, Newquay, St Ives, the Eden Project and the Lost Gardens of Heligan. Holiday cottages in Portreath make a great base from which to explore all that Cornwall has to offer.

Did you know...

Portreath was one of the busiest and most important mining ports in Cornwall?

Portreath beach

If you fancy staying put, a trip to the beach offers a great family day out. Portreath beach is lifeguarded during the summer and as such is popular with families. It’s also ideal for surfing, and is a popular surf spot with the locals. There are surf shops, beach shops, cafés, a fish and chip shop and toilets on the beachfront with other facilities including 3 pubs, a bakery and a post office/general store in the village itself. Dogs are welcome on the beach in the off-season.

Just off the beach at Portreath is the tiny island of Gull Rock. Home to a variety of bird species this is a good spot for birdwatchers if you can get a close enough view!

Kayakers can venture to the east and west and to offshore islands where you can experience the views of the coastline from a different perspective, visit secluded beaches and explore caves in the cliff face. West Cornwall Adventures are on hand to show you the ropes at kayaking, surfing and coasteering for anyone who fancies a go. The surf shop by the beach hires out wet suits and watersports equipment and also offers surfing and bodyboarding lessons.

With a stream running into the sea, and a distinctive harbour, Portreath is a beautiful place to enjoy a holiday. Portreath’s first harbour was built in 1713 by mining adventurers needing a port for their minerals. The remnants of the second harbour that made Portreath a coastal port in 1760 still exist today.

Things to do near Portreath

Just outside Portreath, Tehidy Country Park has 250 acres of woodland, lakes, bridleways, cycling and nature trails with several ponds and a lake with an array of waterfowl. Illogan Woods is adjacent to Portreath with picturesque bubbling streams and a circular walk leading to the 14th century church tower of Illogan.

If you haven’t brought your bike with you, cycle hire is available on the road to nearby Porthtowan, which means you’ve got no excuse not to take advantage of the cycling trails in the area. From your holiday cottage in Portreath, you can cycle The Mining Trail path (Bissoe Trail) that follows the old tram lines across the county from coast to coast, finishing up at Devoran resting on Restronguet Creek just a few miles from Truro Cathedral.

A truly wonderful property, with everything you could ever need whilst on holiday - a real home from home experience. The garden is a nature lover’s delight from watching the birds coming down to the feeders to squirrels rushing here, there and everywhere - we didn’t want to leave.

Treveth is an absolutely beautiful place so much so we've been 2 years on the trot and wouldn't hesitate in coming back again its got everything you need and quite central for everything. If you want some peace and quiet while you're away treveth is definitely the place to be

Treveth is a lovely property, conveniently located with one of the most impressive gardens I’ve ever seen! It’s got all the usual amenities you’ll likely need. Rooms are a bit on the small side but otherwise perfect!

We have just spent a wonderful week at Treveth, and this property exceeded our expectations. The house and gardens are fantastic, the property was cleaned to a high standard, and we have a high standard when it comes to cleanliness, so this was a very positive start to our stay.

The house is very well equipped and comfortable, and the welcome basket of goodies was a lovely surprise. The garden is however the star feature of this property, its a dream garden to explore and spend time, and our little dog was living her best life wondering around. Its magical, and we were super lucky with the weather which obviously helps!

We 100% would stay again, not only is the house a great base, but its perfect location for exploring Cornwall as long as you don't mind driving around, although Portreath is less than 10 minutes away and a great beach/location.

Wow what an amazing location. It was so peaceful sitting in the garden listening to the birds with only an occasional tractor chugging away. The garden was even better than we had hoped for and our dog was in heaven. The bungalow was extremely clean and the kitchen was very well equipped. Treveth is well positioned for North and South coast. We visited Falmouth, St Ives, Trellisick as well as beaches at Hayle and Godrevy. We were very lucky with the glorious weather and hope to return soon.

This property is excellent for humans and dogs, relaxing and so peaceful, we all could not fault it and can't wait to return

Treveth is a great place from which to explore Cornwall. The house is situated in a very quiet private area, however only a few minutes drive from Redruth/Camborne or the lovely coastline and beach of Portreath. We would definitely return here and recommend a stay.

This bungalow is in a great location, close to North coast beaches of Portreath and Porthtowan. The garden is very large, but not at it's best due to the drought. It felt a bit tired and unloved. Don't expect Prosecco and Rick Stein goodies as previously reviewed.

Reply from Aspects Holidays

It is such a shame that you did not get to experience this garden at its best. It is certainly quite unusual, and the owner has a gardener in place who will usually keep the garden looking lovely for guests, but not being able to water it all will have understandably left it looking far from its best. Welcome goodies are at an owners discretion and can change at any time. As a minimum you will always find, tea, coffee, milk and sugar, but we cannot guarantee if there will be additional items I am afraid. Tanya, Customer Services

Fantastic bungalow!!!! We have 3 to 4 cottage holidays a year. Treveth was the very best accommodation ever. Beautiful home set in fabulous gardens.

The garden and location made this property. The garden is huge with a range of plants and tree’s to attract wildlife. A woodpecker was heard often and seen which is a delight coming from a built up area. The location gives easy access to the North Coast beaches and coastal walks. Tehidy Woods a mile or so walk away. The local leisure centre and supermarkets nearby 10mins drive. There was no stress about parking as plenty of room on the driveway for all our cars. The bungalow is comfortable and accommodates a family well with a good size kitchen and equipped for cooking for a family. The views across the garden from the kitchen is stunning and the front large window with views across to Camborne and Troon is idyllic.

Thanks so much to the owners of Treveth. We had a lovely stay at your property with our 3 children and family pet. Very cosy welcoming property with peace and relaxation in the garden.

Beautiful garden and we loved visiting Gwythian beach where dogs we welcome to the left side which was beautiful and enjoyable.

Loved the walk at hells mouth and other walks.

Great location for sightseeing.

All the locals very friendly

We arrived on my birthday so loved the goodies including the Prosecco and Rick Stein Hamper goodies. Thank you

Great location for exploring south Cornwall from a clean and well equipped cottage with a fabulous garden

The property is beautiful with a massive garden. It’s a dreamy location to all major beaches and a fantastic home away from home.

Treveth is a lovely spacious bungalow with a beautiful garden. It’s in a perfect location for exploring south west Cornwall.

We had a lovely holiday at treveth clean and comfortable and the huge garden was great for the children and the dog would recommend to any family the location was great not to far to get to places for e.g. perrenporth, portreath Penzance and marizon and very close to tehidy country park which is great for walking the dog we all had a great holiday and would definitely go back in the future.

We spent a wonderful holiday in a lovely holiday home with a beautiful tranquil garden. We all loved it. Our dogs roamed the garden, the baby did, too, and the rest of us enjoyed the amenities of the fully equipped house. It's a perfect spot to heal from a stressful life, and a handy location for all sorts of outings into the countryside. We'd definitely love to come back one day.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Treveth, it was very comfortable, the garden was stunning and it was the perfect base for exploring south west Cornwall.
