A boat trip from Mousehole

boatrip

One of the best things you can do whilst staying in one of our holiday cottages in Mousehole, is take a boat trip from the beautiful harbour and explore the coastline from a different angle. Berthed on the South Quay of Mousehole harbour, Cormorant Cruising offers just that. To show us what we were missing out on, they kindly offered to take us out for an evening trip aboard their 12 person vessle, the ‘Cormorant’.

Cormorant Cruising Captain

On arrival, we were greeted by none other than Ross Poldark himself – also known as Mike. After going through a short safety talk we motored off from the safety of Mousehole’s still harbour waters, most of us decked out with our best camera kit in the hope of seeing the dolphins or basking sharks often spotted in Mount’s Bay.

The sea was slightly choppy, but we soon found our sea-legs and headed along the coast to the west towards Lamorna Cove and Boscawen Point. Along the way, Skipper Mike told us tales of smuggling, and pointed out different landmarks, including many original pirate smuggler caves, one of which has recently been dated back over 1000 years!

Soon after, the quaint Lamorna Cove came in to view with its sheer cliffs and small harbour, part of which was destroyed in the storms during the winter of 2014. Evidence of an old granite quarry can be seen high above the fishermen’s cottages, and if you look closely you can see where part of a someone’s garden has recently been lost to the sea.

We then headed out of Lamorna cove and instead of hugging the coast, set out slightly further towards the shipping lanes of Newlyn harbour. We passed many small fishing boats and larger trawlers heading out of Newlyn and out into the Atlantic…

After about an hour, we headed back towards St Clements Isle, just off the coast of Mousehole, in the hope of finding some sea-life. The island was adorned with seagulls and Cormorants, and we even found a seal hiding in the caves below the surface, who popped his head up and posed for the cameras…

After enjoying the wildlife, we motored back to the harbour, taking in the views and snapping away at the scenery before we got back to shore…

St-Michael's-Mount

As the weather was so nice, after stepping back on to dry land we decided to stop off at the Ship Inn (as featured on our blog) to sample some local ales and reflect on an evening to remember.

To book your boat trip, visit www.cormorantcruising.co.uk or give them a call on 01736 362032. Or next time you’re in Mousehole, just head down to the harbour and they may well be able to fit you on the next trip.

If the route we took doesn’t take your fancy, they also offer cruises across the bay towards St Michaels Mount, or into the fishing harbours of Newlyn and Penzance.
